The purpose of this research was to determine the levels of attenuation of Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) using a test called Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR). The ASSR test is an electrophysiological examination that uses electrodes to capture the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and the brainstem without depending on the individual's response, thus eliminating the subjectivity of personal factors such as attention, response time, hearing ability, etc. This paper presents the results of a ten test which evaluated the hearing threshold of individuals, by first stimulating the hearing system without a protector and subsequently with a hearing protector. The results of this study were lower than those expressed in the Certificate of Approval: to plug a gap of 10.3 dB and dB the ear mufflers. The repetition of tests found a good repeatability with a difference between zero and 5 dB for 75% of the frequencies tested.

[en] OPERATIONAL MODAL ANALYSIS IN THE TIME DOMAIN: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE IDENTIFICATION METHODS / [pt] ANÁLISE MODAL OPERACIONAL NO DOMÍNIO DO TEMPO: UM ESTUDO CRÍTICO DOS MÉTODOS DE IDENTIFICAÇÃOGUSTAVO BRATTSTROEM WAGNER 13 December 2017 (has links)
[en] Modal analysis consists in the characterization of a system through its modal parameters. When the main excitation source is the system s environment, this characterization is defined as operational modal analysis (OMA). On those cases, the forces are unknown (not measured) and only the responses are monitored. Because of there random nature, those signals are incorporated into the numerical model as stochastic processes. The main goal of this dissertation is to describe the identification techniques in
OMA. Therefore, two different approaches were created: a theoretical one and an experimental one. In the theoretical part, the required hypotheses for system s identification with OMA are presented. An analysis of the errors caused by noisy signals are also performed, allowing the method s sensibility to be evaluated. Besides the standard identification methods, two new ones are proposed. They both has been developed as extension of the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and combine an efficient computational process with the possibility of quantify the parameters uncertainties. In the experimental approach, the goal is to illustrate and validate the identification of structures. Therefore, three different test bench were created: a two floor building, a wind turbine blade and a cable-stayed bridge. After their construction, those structures were proper instrumented with different sensors. A data acquisition system were built using commercial hardwares and analyzed through a graphic interface specially made for OMA and developed in the vibration laboratory.

[en] In the present work I make an analysis about statistical quantities for linear and nonlinear chains in the stationary state. We start the discussion from a general linear model, with arbitrary couplings and connected to Gaussian reservoirs. A detailed analysis for quantities like heat ow and site temperatures is obtained, where all analytical expressions respective to those quantities are derived and a compared with numerical results. Then I study the quantitative and qualitative changes presented by the aforementioned
quantities when the pinnings related to the reservoirs are modified. The changes in temperature profiles are related with the extrema of heat flux cumulants, motivating the investigation of whether phase transitions in the chain might occur. In order to investigate possible critical behaviors, I define
velocity correlation functions between pair particles and squared velocities correlation functions. From where, one is able to estabilish a correlation length respective to these quantities. This study leads to one of the most remarkable achievements of this work, which is the connection made between the changes
presented by some important statistical quantities of heat flux, the system s temperature, vibrational modes and the reservoirs pinnings. By treating the phenomenon of heat conduction in a more realistic and rigorous way, I develop a study to describe the transport properties in an anharmonic chain. Pondering
that an exact solution for this sort of system is unfeasible, I use perturbation theory and other mathematical tools to discuss the main features of heat flux in a nonlinear chain. The technique developed throughout this thesis allows one to compute the heat current for a chain of arbitrary size, and is valid for
systems under in fluence of reservoirs of any nature. We apply the method for chains governed by Gaussian and Poissonian reservoirs, verifying the impact of the nonlinearities over those systems, and comparing the obtained results to the linear case. In the case where there is a Poissonian bath injecting energy into the system, I shed some light on the effects of higher order cumulants related
to the discontinous noise in the heat flux and I show how these new elements
can lead to some results that at first glance seem physically incoherents.

[en] TEMPORAL NEURAL NETWORKS FOR TREATING TIME VARIANT SERIES / [pt] REDES NEURAIS TEMPORAIS PARA O TRATAMENTO DE SISTEMAS VARIANTES NO TEMPOCLAVER PARI SOTO 07 November 2005 (has links)
A pesquisa bibliográfica permitiu compila e classificar os
principais trabalhos sobre RNA Temporais. Tipicamente,
natureza temporal do problema.
Do
No
No
temporais. Os resultados demonstraram que a rede neural
FIR e a rede Elman aprendem melhor a complexidade dos
sinais de voz. / [en] This dissertation investigates the development of
Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in the solution of
problems where the patterns presented to the network have
a temporary relationship to each other, such as time
series forecast and voice processing.
Temporary ANN considers the time in its operation,
incorporating memory of short period distributed in the
network in all the hidden neurons and in the output
neurons in some cases. This class of network in better
used to represent the temporary nature of the dynamic
systems. In contrast, Static ANN has a structure adapted
for tasks of pattern recognition, classification and
another static or stationary problems, achieving great
success in several applications. Considered an universal
approximator, Static ANN has also been used in
applications of dynamic systems, through some artifices in
the input of the network and through statistical data pre-
processings.
The objective of this work is, therefore to study
the theory and evaluate the performance of Temporal ANN,
in comparison with Static ANN, in applications of dynamics
systems. The development of this research involved 3 main
stages: bibliographical research of the methodologies
developed for Temporal ANN; selection and implementation
of the models for the evaluation of these networks; and
case studies.
The bibliographical research allowed to compile
and to classify the main on Temporal ANN, Typically, these
network was selected, where the synapses are filters FIR
(Finite-duration Impulse Response) that represent the
temporary nature of the problem. The FIR network has been
selected since it includes practically all other methods
of its class, presenting a more formal mathematical model.
On the second group, the Elman recurrent network was
considered, that presents global feedback of each neuron
in the hidden layer to all other neurons in this layer.
In the case studies the network selected have been
tested in two application: forecast of time series and
digital signal processing. In the case of forecast, result
of electric energy consumption time series prediction were
compared with the result found in the literature such as
Holt-Winters, Box & Jenkins and Static ANN methods. In the
case of the application of processing where the
comparisons were made with the results presented by the
standard neural filter, made of a multilayer feed-forward
network with the back propagation learning algorithm.
This work showed in practice that Temporal ANN
captures the characteristics of the temporary processes in
a more efficient way that Static ANN and other methods,
being able to learn the non stationary behavior of the
temporary series directly. The results showed that the FIR
neural network and de Elman network learned better the
complexity of the voice signals.

Sistemas dinâmicos excitáveis sob a ação de ruídos não-gaussianos / Excitable dynamic systems under the action of non-gaussian noiseDuarte, José Ricardo Rodrigues 25 March 2011 (has links)
Physical systems far from thermo dynamic equilibrium present excitability and irreversibility. The excitability is responsible for the great sensitivity of these systems to external stimuli while the irreversibility is associated with energy dissipation. The thermal fluctuations, inevitable in any real system, arise due to the interaction between many particles of the system. For such systems one of the best approaches is given by the non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, since it is virtually impossible an individualized approach of the motion equations. Many works in the current literature use a Gaussian stochastic modeling (without correlations) to represent the fluctuations. However, there is a growing number of studies reporting the occurrence of correlated fluctuations, mainly related to biological systems. In this thesis we investigate the influence of non-Gaussian stochastic distribution on the properties for two representative excitable models. In the first model we study the influence of distribution on the neural dynamics through the stochastic resonance (SR) mechanism. In the second model we approach the ratchet effect (RE) on directed transport of particles. In both systems we use a non-Gaussian power-law distributed noise obtained through a random multiplicative process (RMP). This process allows a fine tuning of the asymptotic power-law decay exponent. The optimization conditions are reported. In particular, we show that the optimization conditions for resonance and directed transport in Brownian ratchets are reached for a finit decay exponent of the stochastic distribution that represents a Strong non-Gaussian character. As non-Gaussian fluctuations occur with great frequency in natural systems, we believe that the non-Gaussian character can optimize the efficiency on the stochastic transport mechanisms in micro and nanoscale. / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Alagoas / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Sistemas físicos fora do equilíbrio termo dinâmico apresentam excitabilidade
e irreversibilidade.

In many systems of day-life occurs the coupling between the acoustical response in a cavity and a structural excitation on a flexible boundary, whereas the structural response in this same boundary is also related to acoustical excitation source. Car interiors, cabs of trucks and aircraft fuselage are a just a few practical examples of this sort of systems. Coupling implies that the acoustical and structural system behavior is not independent from each other, and therefore they must be considered as a global system behavior. The aim of this work is to evaluate a compact matrix formulation to solve vibro-acoustic problems in regular and irregular shape cavity. Preliminary, the vibro-acoustic coupling analysis is based on finite element method and the set of non-symmetric equation that represents the movement is discussed. The compact matrix formulation approaches have been done using impedance and mobility concepts. In compact matrix model, the coupling is obtained by evaluating the uncoupled acoustic modes and structural modes of the cavity and flexible structure, respectively. Numerical simulation using the finite element method and the compact matrix formulation are shown for regular and irregular shape cavity model. Experimental tests are evaluated in an irregular rigid cavity made of PVC and steel. The results analysis methodology is based on FRF(s) defined by the relationship between the pressure acoustic response in the cavity and structural force and between the velocity response and structural force applied on the flexible boundary. The comparison of numerical and experimental models shows the potential of the compact matrix formulation.

The proposal of this work is to use robust control techniques in order to suppress mechanical vibration in structures with pieozoelectric sensors and actuators coupled. The controllers are designed by convex optimization and the constraints are dealt through linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) frameworks. Two different methodologies to feedback the system by using LMIs are explained. The first one is the observer-based state-feedback considering polytopic uncertainties. The second one is the H output feedback control considering norm-bound uncertainties. The sensors/actuators are located in optimal placements by using H norm as performance index. The mathematical models used in the controller design were obtained by finite element methods considering eletromechanical effects between the host structure and piezoelectric sensors/actuators patches or by using identification methods. In this sense, it is also discussed the eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA). Three different applications are proposed and solved in order to illustrate the applicability of the methodology: a cantilever plate; a cantilever beam; and an active flutter suppression in a 2-D airfoil, a problem of considered interest in the aeronautic industry. The results showed the vibration suppression in the bandwidth of interest when submited to the requirements imposed by practical situations.
