This paper has been written primarily to emphasize the need of some pattern in school building and planning. The principles and practices herein contained are not complete in all aspects. Many of the specifications have been accepted by authorities specializing in this field. The county in which the writer is employed is about to embark upon a building program. It becomes a most opportune time to carry on a study concerned with the planning and construction of a practical building. Familiarization with accepted practices might well influence thinking of all concerned. Population trends and school building needs in the Merced city school district

The natural result of this increased population was to place an abnormal strain on the Merced City School facilities. In the last ten years the enrollment of the schools in this city has increased from a peak of 1773 to 3566 pupils. The administrators of Merced City schools, in attempting to provide adequate facilities for the mounting enrollments, have in the last three years, with the support of the patrons of the district, financed and constructed six new school buildings. Four of these are additions to the total number of district buildings and have been located at new sites because of the transfer of minor population to different attendance areas. Of the other two, one is a replacement and enlargement of an inadequate building, and the other is a replacement located at a new site to accommodate a shifted zone of attendance. In spite or this effort, once again for the school year 1953-1954 there are arrangements being made for three more temporary buildings for classrooms, making a total of seventeen temporary structures being used. The overloaded attendance at one school without space tor expansion probably indicates that consideration should also be given to establishing an additional attendance center on the south side of town. To add to these problems there is a feeling among patrons that added facilities such as cafeterias and multipurpose rooms should be planned. New constructions always further strain the finances of a school district for equipment and improvement of grounds. Out of this situation arises a question of just what are the building needs in the Merced City School District as indicated by the population trends? This question resolves itself into other related questions which will be used as a guide for this investigation: What does a study of the community indicate as to its growth within the last ten years and its probably growth? What does the present educational program of the Merced City schools reveal regarding the optimum usage of the facilities already provided? What are the trends in school enrollment and what future enrollments may be expected within the next six years? Do evaluation scores of present buildings and their utilization indicate a need for additional facilities? What is the recommended school plant as indicated by an analysis of scientific data?

Building condition and student achievement and behavior

This study examined the relationship between the condition of school facilities and student achievement and student behavior. The entire population of small, rural high schools in Virginia was used in this study. Building condition was determined by the Commonwealth Assessment of Physical Environment which was completed by personnel in the divisions of the forty-seven schools in the population. Student achievement was determined by the scale scores of the Test of Academic Proficiency for grade eleven during the 1991-1992 school year. Student behavior was determined by the ratio of the number of expulsions, suspensions, and violence/substance abuse incidents to the number of students in each school. All achievement scores were adjusted for socioeconomic status by using the free and reduced lunch numbers for each school. These variables were investigated using analysis of covariance, correlations, and regression analysis. This study found the student achievement scores were higher in schools with better building conditions. Student discipline incidents were also higher in schools with better building condition. Science achievement scores were better in buildings with better science laboratory conditions. Cosmetic building condition appeared to impact student achievement and student behavior more than structural building condition. Finally, varying climate control, locker, and graffiti conditions were factors which were positively related to student achievement scale scores. / Ed. D.

Systems Engineering was applied to Terraset, a school underground, heated and cooled via the sun. The Systems Engineering process (since it occurred after design) consisted of Needs Analysis, Functional Analysis, Test Requirements Analysis and System Life Cycle Cost Analysis. The school had never been Systems Engineered and the processes revealed a long list of requirements still lacking. The results of the thesis are applicable to a new design taking place at the Burke Center Elementary School. / M.S.

The beginning

On the most simple level the projects presented here are intended to fulfill the requirements of a kindergarten. At the next level they represent an investigation into the roles of order in design. In these projects I have chosen to deal with four orders inherent to architecture. The most basic is the order of material, fundamental and inescapable. Linked to this is the order of geometry, which must be sympathetic to the order of material, but goes further in establishing an overall pattern. Giving additional meaning to the overall pattern is the hierarchical order of the spaces. Finally, the social order animates the hierarchy with the abstract notions of the individual and collective. The core of this thesis lies in the integration of these orders into a coherent system, a deep structure adaptable to a variety of conditions. This deep structure gathers the orders, allowing for the necessary freedom while giving the equally indispensable restraint. The system provides a vehicle, an operational method from which one may approach each new circumstance. The following pages present the physical manifestations of this deep structure at several scales. From the realm of the site to the geometry of small objects the single overriding structure gives order, bringing together disparate elements into comprehensible wholes, intensifying the experience and ultimately infusing the whole with a spirit, architecture. / Master of Architecture
