Duiwelsdorp (2015): a Sangoma's story of South AfricaEspost, Carla Inez January 2015 (has links)
"I live my life with stories that came before me. I tell stories because of stories that were told before. I wrote a story, a screenplay, called Duiwelsdorp 'Devil Town' because of stories that were told before me, to me and now a story lives within me. I am a storyteller because I am a woman, born from woman, alive through story. I am a woman because I give birth - to story, who actually first gave birth to me…It is in this sense that I then take up my place next to this "new generation of post-apartheid South African filmmakers" (storytellers/historians) and assume the duty of reminding my society "of its near and distant origins, of the experiences that shaped it, of its cultural wellsprings" (Confino, 1997: 1187). I took it upon myself to tell another real story of South Africa, the story of Johannesburg, the story of Duiwelsdorp (2015)… By choosing to tell the story of Jack McKeone and other white outlaw heroes, Duiwelsdorp (2015) challenges the popular notion of criminality and delinquency in South Africa. " - Carla Espost in Duiwelsdorp (2015): A Sangoma's Story of South Africa.

A feature-length thriller screenplay studying the homeless epidemic across the United States. Francisco Serras is a formerly homeless man, due to his constant drinking and poor upbringing. While he wanted a better life for himself, he never had an opportunity until his friend, Roger, was accepted into a job program for the unhoused. Unfortunately, Roger passed away before he could begin, which gave Francisco his shot. He stole Roger’s identity, sobered up and has been working under a pseudonym ever since. His former friends, Neil and Luis, are disgusted by him, but Francisco believes he has the right to look out for himself and not stay out on the streets. He works at Accommodation Real Estate, an apartment management company. He discovers his real name on a lease and investigates this clerical error to ensure his real identity is not leaked to his employer. However, the more he investigates the more he puts his own life on the line as he’s on the run from both assassins and the law, at one point resulting in the death of his best friend, Neil. He uncovers that the company which saved him from poverty is the same one behind the conspiracy and it goes deeper than Francisco could have imagined. This sends Francisco back to abusing alcohol and living out on the streets until Luis helps him sober up. Francisco realizes that looking out for others, rather than yourself, is the only way forward and uses this newfound knowledge to take down the forces suppressing the city.
