Research in functionalist psychology and social psychology has shown the existence of strong relationships between emotions and cognition, between emotions and language learning, and between emotions and performances in foreign languages. This thesis in applied linguistics aims to describe and analyse the verbal manifestations of emotions from a corpus of authentic advising sessions which were recorded and transcribed. The analysis focuses on emotional episodes and emotion statements in the context of advising sessions. The methodology used to identify emotional episodes comprises two stages: in the first stage, linguistic cues are identified as potential signals of an emotion and, when accumulated, indicate particular sequences of speech; in the second stage, these sequences are isolated and qualitatively studied in order to either confirm or reject the presence of emotions. In terms of emotional episodes, the analyses show that learners exhibit a more diverse range of emotions than advisors. There is also a tendency for advisors to use their own emotions while performing emotional work. The observation of emotion statements shows first the centrality of the learner’s position: a large majority of emotion statements indeed involve the learner. Second, different postures were identified between advisers and learners in the use of terms of emotion. When using emotion statements, learners aim to self-assign emotions while advisers use emotion statements to project emotions on to learners. The analysis also helped to highlight the link between emotions expressed in advising sessions and the rhythm of learning. In general, emotions (emotional episodes and emotion statements) appear to be accurate indicators of progress in the learning process.

This thesis is a study of the transformation processes undergone by a Western adult, in the first half of his life, after a series of trips to the Far East. In making a detour "to the most distant," the aim is not to think the training process with reference to the extraordinary journeys or the unusal trials, regardless of the everyday life. Concisely, the connection made between "journey paractices" and "reflexive practices" leads to the formulation of a framework to think the initiated transformations and to structure accompanying practices in the field of vocational training. Emprirically, the research is based on the study of the journey of life of an adult born in France in the 1970s. The whole study is fulfilled according to a survey methodology called "biographical explanation." The used methodology consists of crossing biographical interviews -the narration of the life course in its different periods- and the explanation interviews to explore the unique and special moments

Självbedömning i förhållande till uppnått resultat : Nationella prov och processbarhetsanalys på sfi / Self-assessment compared to achieved results : National tests in Swedish and processability theory in Sfi.Gustavsson, Emelie January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to investigate which of the goals in the syllabus, and with that what knowledge of Swedish, four students taking the SFI (Swedish for Immigrants) level 3 course believed themselves to have attained and to compare their self-assessments with their results on the National Test of Swedish for adult immigrants. The method used for the investigation is the individual interview. In addition to taking the National Test, the participants in the investigation were asked to mark the goals they believe themselves to have attained. The results show that the informants who best demonstrated awareness of their own knowledge are able to talk freely about their knowledge and difficulties, and when they mark the goals they believe they have attained, these correspond, on the whole, to how they responded in the interviews. One of the informants finds it more difficult than the others to assess her knowledge. A comparison between her experiences and the National Test results revealed several inconsistencies. For example, she claims that she can communicate in Swedish, but still she didn’t pass the test.

Students’ Meaning-Making Journeys Towards Self-Authorship Through Self-Designed Gap Year ExperiencesGarcia, Erin 01 December 2020 (has links)
This phenomenological, qualitative study addressed student perceptions of their meaning-making process towards self-authorship in a self-designed gap year experience and was conducted in a public higher educational institution in the Southeast. Data was gathered through interviews from a purposeful sample of gap year program participants and program administrators. Emerging themes and categories were identified by coding and analyzing the interview data, such as continual reflection reinforces the value of individual meaning-making, self-expectations versus self-worth, the influence of societal expectations are minimized, and self-designed learning helps to solidify changes in self-authorship. The data showed a strong connection between multiple meaning-making contexts for students and an enhancement in their authorship, as well as multiple-identities. The findings may be useful in gap year program reflection and redesign, and provide implications for self-design in experiential learning opportunities and gap year outcomes.

Saunders, Constanze 17 December 2014 (has links)
Online Language Learning Counseling (OLLC) is a new method in language learning counseling. It employs various forms of communication (email, chat, and internet telephone) and various instruments (i. e. surveys, plans, and learning journals) in order to systematically complement and support foreign language students\'' self-directed learning and work processes between face-to-face and online advising sessions. The specific communicative conditions in OLLC lead to benefits and challenges for the counseling process, which can mainly be traced back to the different modalities of the communication (oral vs. written) and synchronous vs. asynchronous forms of interaction.
Based on seven cases, the study describes and analyzes possible applications of this counseling approach. Its methodological framework is a longitudinal action research design with evaluative elements. The cases, which show varying formats of OLLC, are analyzed using qualitative methods applied to different sets of data, including session transcripts, participant interviews, and the counselor\''s reflections.
The learners differed in their evaluations of most of the counseling forms and instruments utilized. However, most of them valued the emails that helped them prepare for the sessions and written summaries of the meetings. The in-depth analysis of three paradigmatic cases illustrates varying scenarios of OLLC, taking into account different attitudes, motivation, and working habits. The study thus shows the necessity for a counseling method that is flexible considering both the content as well as the media.
The most important benefits of OLLC found in the study were the possibility to trigger self-reflection and to support motivation to learn. The composition of written texts posed a considerable difficulty to the students due to the demands of content creation and foreign language use. For the counselor, technical problems made practicing a non-directive counseling approach difficult.

häufig geringes Interesse an ihren Seminarthemen
zeigen und gelernte Inhalte nach Abschluss
eines Seminars meist nicht mehr präsent sind. Daher
war es das Ziel des hochschulübergreifenden Projektes
KoSemKo, Studierenden mit dem Schwerpunkt
Marketing die Möglichkeit zu geben, interessante
Ergebnisse, die sie im Rahmen ihrer Seminararbeiten
selbst entwickeln, in einer professionellen Konferenz-
Atmosphäre zu präsentieren. Studierende
sammeln dadurch nicht nur Erfahrung im wissenschaftlichen
Schreiben, sondern schlüpfen gleichzeitig
bei der Durchführung eines Peer-Reviews in die
Rolle der Gutachter_innen und auf der Konferenz in
die Rollen der Vortragenden und Teilnehmer_innen.
Durch das Einnehmen dieser verschiedenen Perspektiven
setzen sich die Studierenden kritisch und tiefer
greifend mit ihren Themen auseinander. Dadurch
wird zudem die Motivation gesteigert und gleichzeitig
die inhaltliche sowie wissenschaftlich/methodische
Komponente der Proseminar- und Seminararbeiten
verbessert.

Automation and Autonomy : Developing and Evaluating Open Learning Material on IR Cameras in Automation Applications / Automation och AutonomiAhlberg, Victor, Frid, Julia January 2019 (has links)
This master thesis project was based on the development and evaluation of an open learning material in thermal imaging for automation applications. The outsourcer – FLIR Systems – wanted a three-day course covering all necessary topics for infrared cameras in automation applications. These topics include thermography, optics, detectors, networks, protocols, and more. The open learning material was designed to function as a three-day, self-paced, distance course, and it was based on theories of andragogy, self-directed learning and transformative learning. The master thesis process was essentially divided into two phases: the development phase and the evaluation phase. The method for the development phase was based on a literature study. The literature on creating open learning material included ways of compensating for the lack of social interaction in distance courses, such as a friendly, warm narrator using the pronoun “I”, encouraging phrases, and self-assessment questions (SAQs). An SAQ is a framing of question intended to guide the learner towards self-assessment of his or her learning and knowledge. The vital part of the SAQ is the response, where not only the correct answer is given, but feedback on the wrong choices too. The development of the open learning material was an iterative process where discussion with supervisors at FLIR Systems and KTH Royal Institute of Technology led to improvements of the material. The evaluation phase consisted of two tests with test subjects. The first test was conducted by sending a sample unit of the material to test subjects around the world along with a questionnaire. The main objective was to test the tone and style of the material. There were variations in the result, but the majority found the material friendly and readable. The second test was an in-house test with three participants. Three sample units of the material was used, and the main objective was to test the usability of the material and the test subjects’ perceived learning process. The usability of the material varied with the three test subjects and depended on their technological prerequisites and reading comprehension in English. All test subjects responded positively to their perceived learning outcome. The following conclusions were drawn: the open learning material has the potential to promote autonomous and self-directed learners and can be used as a basis for further development – such as web-based courses and teacher-led classes. The open learning material as a whole and the results and analysis from the tests are included as appendices.

Utveckling av rekommendationer för verifiering av standariserade analysmetoder och undersökning av utbildning inom anlysmetodik : Med verifiering av jonkromatografisk analys av klorat som exempel / Developments of Recommendations regarding Verification of Standardized Analytical Methods and a Survey of Training in Analytical Methods : With verification of ionchromatographic analysis of chlorate as an exampleNordström, Amanda January 2022 (has links)
During the production of paperboard at the integrated pulp and paperboard mill, owned by Holmen Iggesund Paperboard AB, chlorate is formed, which is a toxic compound for aquatic organisms. It is therefore essential that the chlorate levels in the wastewater from the mill, which is released to the ocean, are below the established limit. In order to monitor the effluent of chlorate, wastewater samples are routinely analyzed, and for this purpose an ion chromatograph was intended to be put to use. Ion chromatography is a standardized method for chlorate analysis, which needs to be verified before being used for routine analyses. No explicit requirements regarding the extent of the verification existed. One purpose of this study was therefore to develop general recommendations regarding the extent of verification of a standardized analytical method. Literature regarding verification was sought for and summarized. Based on the literature, a plan for verifying ion chromatographic analysis of chlorate was constructed. The measurement results obtained were evaluated statistically. Conclusions drawn were: calibration and maintenance of the instrument during the verification process should reflect the frequency of maintenance and calibration planned during the routine use; selectivity should be tested early on, as well as real samples; the extent of the verification with respect to matrices and concentration levels should reflect those that will be included in the routine use of the analytical method; the number of experiments included depends on the requirements imposed on the performance characteristics of the method. At least 6 experiments for each sample was a good aim for verifying precision and trueness, while one experiment was enough for verification of selectivity and the working range of the instrument. In order to ensure satisfactory analysis quality, training in analytical methods is an important aspect. Another purpose of this study was to investigate the learning objectives of the educational activities as well as what challenges could be identified with respect to training in analytical methods. Through focus group interviews and observations, data was collected about the educational activities and challenges. Based on the theoretical framework self-directed learning, a deductive thematic analysis was performed. Conclusions were: The overall purpose of the training in analytical methods was that the person who underwent training should be able to independently apply the analytic method, with the aid of the analytical instruction, have the necessary knowledge about reasonable results, be able to reflect about their work and have knowledge about the purpose of the analytical method. No standardized template regarding what should be included in the training existed, which contributed to uncertainties regarding if equivalent knowledge was achieved for persons under training. The educational approach of today did not encourage the person under training enough to take responsibility for fulfilling the learning objectives. To enable this, it was suggested that a preparation element should be included in the training, and also that the person under training should get more time and opportunities to complete some of the training independently.
