Immigrants probability to receive social assistance : Do we have a difference between immigrants and natives and what happens over time?Skoog, Andreas January 2018 (has links)
This essay studies the immigrant’s probability to participate in social assistance compared to natives and if there any assimilation effect. A linear probability model is used to get the result. The result show that immigrant have a higher likelihood of participating in social assistance compared to natives. The result shows that the probability differs between regions of birth and between refugees and non-refugees, with a higher probability for immigrants from the Middle east and refugees. Previous Swedish studies have not added language skill in Swedish to their models but in this essay, language skill in Swedish variable is included, it shows that the probability reduces if the immigrants know Swedish. There is no assimilation effect on immigrants as a group but there is evidence of assimilation when immigrant gets divided into regions, education level and refugees.

Essays on social mobility, immigration and the skill premiumPiggott, Rebecca Jane January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is formed of three chapters. The first chapter examines the effect on social mobility and economic growth following the introduction of reprogenetic technology such that parents can choose to invest in the talent or ability of their unborn children. I find that if the economy is initially in a steady state such that social mobility is low, the introduction of such technology can increase social mobility and economic growth. If the economy is initially in a steady state such that social mobility is high, then the introduction of such technology will not increase (and may decrease) social mobility and will not affect economic growth. The second chapter is a review of the literature on how immigration affects wages focusing on studies of the US and UK labour markets. The third chapter analyses how the skill premium depends on the relative supply of high and low skilled workers in the economy, and the size of the economy. Using a two-sector model where one sector is more skill-intensive than the other, and returns to scale are larger in the skill-intensive sector, I find that the skill premium depends positively on the size of the economy. I consider the effect of an exogenous increase in the number of skilled workers (perhaps due to immigration) on the skill premium and find that under certain conditions the skill premium may increase. I then analyse the effect on the skill premium and the relative price of the skill intensive good in the short and long run and compare the models predictions to the data.

Many authors have been pointing the neuropsychological impairment but not the motor and functional deficits. The aim of this study was to assess patients with (SCD) and stroke comparing with patients with SCD without stroke. We pre-selected patients with ages ranging form 5 to 25 years and diagnosis of SCD and stroke for the experimental group (EG), and without stroke for the control group (CG). Overall, 15 patients were enrolled, of whom 10 were in EG and 5 in CG. Patients and their parents were informed about the research objectives and procedures and agreed to participate by signing a Free Consent Agreement Form. A protocol was organized including identification data, neurological clinical exam, neurological imaging screening; neuromotor and function assessment. The identification and history of SCD and the cerebrovascular event data were collected from records and completed with an interview of patients and their parents. The patients were assessed with neuromotor scales and the following function instruments: PEDI and EB test. In EG patients, the first stroke occurred with high incidence between 4 and 15 years of age; despite the low number of individuals evaluated, findings are in accordance with previously published, evidencing patients with SCD and stroke in early age, all with ischemic event; 2 patients had recurrence of stroke despite prophylactic blood transfusion therapy. The analysis of the results of this study revealed important neuromotor deficits in EG; superior performance in functional instruments of the CG, especially in gross motor function, global strength; rang of motion; neurological tests; sensory and grasp. The muscle tonus and strength interfered with sensory, gross and fine motor function, neurological exam; perception; range of motion; and grasp. The motor, sensorial and function impairments resulting from cortical-subcortical structure lesions were confirmed by neurologic imaging exams, especially involving middle cerebral artery, perforating branches and anterior cerebral artery. Therefore, these neuromotor and functional findings in EP and also in CG justify to include these assessments and neurological imaging screening in patients with SCD, even in those without stroke. This may help to identify risk factors, improving prophylaxis for the first stroke or its recurrence, as well as the rehabilitation after stroke / Mestrado / Ciencias Biomedicas / Mestre em Ciências Médicas

obra do setor.

Análise da transição temporal do conteúdo de química exigido nos exames vestibulares públicos paulista / Analysis of the time transition in the Chemical concepts required for pre-entrance exams from public universities of São PauloVítor Pasta Zanni 04 December 2014 (has links)
The influence of large scale assessment on the curriculum is well known and widely discussed. However, a influence of pre-entrance tests on it has been put aside, as well as the discussion about is influence on governmental assessment. The present work tries to clear that pass, analysing if there is any significant change on the types of questions made by these pre-entrance exams, in a perspective of living up to the social responsibility that was imposed on them. It is made an analysis around the cognitive level required by the questions - based on Bloom\'s taxonomy (1983) and in Zollers cognitive skills requirements (2002) - amongst other relevant details, such as interdisciplinarity, chemistry field addressed, skills and competences involved and the discrimination rate, over the period of eleven years (2003 - 2013). The results show a growing worry towards the way the student\'s capability is being measured by these exams. From that, it\'s briefly discussed the use of such exams as base to building the curriculum, as well as how the exams are treated by the non-academics and its consequences.

Mental imagery rehearsal strategies for expert pianistsDavidson-Kelly, Kirsteen Mary January 2014 (has links)
For pianists working within the western art music tradition, the ability to perform a large and complex repertoire from memory is almost a prerequisite for a successful career. Memorising and maintaining this repertoire requires considerable practice and can lead to physical overuse syndromes. Additionally, automated motor memory developed via physical practice is not always sufficient for secure recall, often leading to performance anxiety. It is important therefore for professionals to identify optimal practice strategies, and mental rehearsal has been widely advocated as a potential means of enhancing memorisation and performance fluency while at the same time avoiding physical overuse. The results of three studies that examined mental imagery rehearsal by expert pianists, adopting a mixed methods approach, are presented in this thesis. The first was a participant observation study of a course at which eleven advanced pianists learned to use a memorisation technique incorporating deliberate imagery; the study aimed to describe the teaching and learning of specific imagery techniques and to examine the potential advantages and drawbacks of this approach. The second study was an online questionnaire survey of thirty six piano students at UK conservatoires designed to investigate the teaching and implementation of mental rehearsal techniques at advanced training levels; the survey found that despite a widespread awareness of imagery rehearsal as a potentially effective strategy, training in specific techniques was not consistently available, and recommended mental practice strategies were adopted much less consistently than strategies involving physical practice. Finally, an fMRI study of fourteen expert pianists aimed to determine the neural correlates of imagery rehearsal and simulated piano playing. Differences observed in brain activation between tasks suggested increased involvement of working memory processes during mental imagery. The thesis concludes that mental imagery rehearsal techniques are acquired skills that can be taught and improved over time and which have specific advantages over motor learning, but that more pedagogical training is needed in order for these techniques to become fully effective and widely adopted.

Evaluation of Search and Rescue Planning Tools on the West Florida ShelfO'loughlin, Benjamin 03 November 2016 (has links)
The Coast Guard conducts over 20,000 search and rescue cases a year with approximately 5% of them occurring within the coastal waters of the West Florida Shelf (WFS). Each search effort is planned using the Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System (SAROPS) which uses model inputs to create composite probability distributions based on the results of Monte Carlo projections of thousands of particle trajectories. However, SAROPS is limited by the quality of model inputs and their associated errors. This study utilizes observations from three surface drifter deployments on the WFS to evaluate the effectiveness of available surface current models, including one model not currently in use by the Coast Guard. Additionally, the performance of high-frequency (HF) Radar observations is evaluated against the models. The HF Radar root-mean-square errors (RMSE) were found to be on the order of 10 cm/s, and a model created with objectively mapped HF Radar data was found to out-perform all available models. Additionally, a comparison of model skills (using a normalized Lagrangian separation method) showed the West Florida Coastal Ocean Model (WFCOM) to have better skill on both the inner and outer shelf regions of the WFS when compared to other models.
