The here presented work constitutes a historical narrative constructed around the life trajectory of Antonio Ferreira Cesarino (1808-1892). The aim was to present the itinerary of this man, noting the historical period and the contexts in which he lived. Moving in racially hierarchical society which had logical racial contextual, Cesarino, a black man, was classified as "pardo" (brown). In a dialectical view, I will suggest that an identification as pardo was attributed in intersection with his social conditions well as his particular social action. In parallel, I argue that the designation pardo, operating as oppositional mode, was a diacritical signal used to demonstrate the difference. For Cesarino, reaching the expressive social and professional performance and a high level of prestige was only possible, given specific social conditions, his own actions, as well as the practise and exchange of "mercês". As result of my research, I assume that the practise of mercês or its exchange can be understood as borrowings, donations, favors, efforts, altogether, as the useful and profitable practices that are bound together by the capacities of giving, receiving and returning. In terms of spacial scenary, my work choses a rather flexibel focus for analysis, switching from Vila do Paracatu do Príncipe, in the northeast of Minas Gerais to Vila São Carlos, a place later to become the city of Campinas, a country town of São Paulo state. The discussion is situated between the first decades of the 19th and the first years of the 20th century. Narrative and analysis about the life trajectory of Cesarino brings several pertinent aspects of his biography leading to a deeper understanding of this man?s relationship to the society he lived in and opportunities avaiable in that context / Doutorado / Antropologia Social / Doutor em Antropologia Social

HERANÇA MULTIFATORIAL: CONCEPÇÕES DE ESTUDANTES DE ENSINO MÉDIO, DESENVOLVIMENTO E APLICAÇÃO DE MATERIAIS DIDÁTICOS / HERITAGE MULTIFACTORIAL: CONCEPTIONS OF STUDENTS OF HIGH SCHOOL, DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF MATERIALS DIDACTICSFontoura, Andrielli da Silva 25 February 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Most of the features are displayed by complex organisms results of multifactorial inheritance, such as skin color in humans. This study aimed to investigate the high school students conceptions about multifactorial inheritance and, based on the information collected, develop educational materials that promote the application of genetic concepts in everyday matters. Participated in this study 48 students from two high school classes, enrolled in two public schools in Santa Maria / RS and São Vicente do Sul / RS. The survey was conducted in three stages called application of pre-test, didactic approach and implementation of the post-test. We develop a game, a didactic model and a hypertext is recommended for high school classes. The game and the teaching model was applied by the researcher and indicate their use for classes that have studied basics of monogenic and multifactorial inheritance. The applied materials were evaluated as motivation and use of genetic concepts. The evaluation by students and teachers indicated that the proposal is challenging and useful for genetic education with good applicability to review concepts. Hypertext was developed in three versions, according to the student's reality, being a material useful for situations where you have little time to teaching content to be a practical and easy handling means. To make it more interesting and interactive activity is recommended to be done beyond reading a discussion so that students and teachers can share ideas on the subject under study. Students from both groups showed an increase in the proportion of correct answers after the application of the didactic sequence, this improvement was most notable for the students in the class had a low rate of correct answers in the pre-test which had not studied the subject multifactorial inheritance ( class 2).

New prognosis markers and new targets for therapy in high risk melanoma: evaluation of TYRP1 as a melanoma prognostic marker and its regulation by miRNA(s)El Hajj, Petra 29 May 2015 (has links)

A genetic investigation into a Lebanese population: from STR’s to SNP’sGhemrawi, Mirna 26 June 2018 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In the past, the present and the future, Lebanon has been an important link between the East and the West. It was always known as the ‘Switzerland of the East’. Over the years, it was a hotspot for different civilizations that uniquely shaped the genomic backbone of the current Lebanese. It is also a good representation of genetically admixed individuals with diverse phenotype characteristics and unique features. Lebanon, quite like other Middle Eastern populations, lacks sufficient genetic studies that helps to better comprehend the complex genomic composition of different traits and diseases. The lack of good representation of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in global studies has led to ambiguity in discovering special ancestry markers and patterns in the Lebanese genome. Yet, in this study, a thorough investigation into a Lebanese collection shows new patterns that potentially would be helpful in forensic and genealogical applications. The investigation into the autosomal and Y-STRs revealed unique alleles that would be valuable in future forensic investigation analysis. In addition, the assessment of phenotype prediction models to predict eye, hair and skin color showed promising results in terms of prediction performance. Those results encourage the future use of intelligence tools in the regions that in return would aid in serving justice and furthering science research. In fact, ancestry and genetic distance studies confirms the presence of admixture within Lebanon between Europe and North Africa. / 2029-06-01

Hudfärg - ett hinder? : Minoritetsstress bland studenter inför arbetslivetBerg, Julia, Le, Victoria Dinh Thi January 2023 (has links)
Stress is a common health problem among students, and individuals with a minority identity might also experience minority stress. Minority stress associated with skin color is a relatively unexplored topic in Sweden; thus this study aims to investigate a possible connection between students' skin color and their minority stress from a jobseeker's perspective. To investigate this, a digital survey consisting of 25 items was carried out. Participants (n=177) were recruited through convenience sampling and categorized into three groups based on skin color (light, medium light/dark, dark). A one-way ANOVA was carried out to test the study's hypothesis that students with darker skin have a higher degree of minority stress prior to the job search process than students with lighter skin. The result showed a significant difference between the groups(F2,174=34.5, p<.001, 2= .275) and a post-hoc test (Tukey) showed significant differences between each group. The result was consistent with the study's hypothesis and previous research. Furthermore, this study concludes that minority stress can give rise to mental illness. Additionally, the study concludes that Meyer's American framework, which aims to measure minority stress in gay and bisexual individuals, can be applied in a Swedish context with racist stress factors. For further research, a more representative sample would be beneficial, as well as a broadened perspective by examining how schools and workplaces work to counter minority stress, which in turn could prevent mental illness.

Effects of skin color on the Accuracy of heart ratedetection of commercial wearable devices / Effekten av olika hudfärger på nogrannheten vidmätning av hjärtslag med olika kommersiella bärbaraenheterJaber, Hussein January 2023 (has links)
The ownership and demand for fitness trackers, smartwatches, and wrist-worn deviceshave been increasing globally. These devices offer various features such as measuringphysical activity, sleep monitoring, and health-related measurements like heart rate andheart rate variability using PhotoPlethysmoGraphy (PPG). However, research indicatesthat PPG measurements are less accurate on darker skin compared to lighter skin due to thehigher presence of melanin, a light-absorbing substance in dark skin. This thesis addresses the impact of melanin on the accuracy of heart rate measurements ondifferent skin colors using four commercial smartwatches, Apple Watch Series 5, FitbitCharge 2, Xiaomi Miband 3, and Sony mSafety. The study involves analyzing the accuracyof these smartwatches on individuals with varying skin colors while controlling forexternal factors. The collected data from the smartwatches are compared to a referencesensor that uses electrocardiography (ECG) measurements with electrodes placed aroundthe chest. Three different tests are conducted wearing the devices, with no movement, while walking, and with circular hand motions. The tests were conducted on twelve participants representing the 6 different skin typescategorized using the Fitzpatrick scale. With the presented results in this thesis, it wasconcluded that the 4 smartwatches' measurement accuracy does not seem to be dependenton specific skin types. Ranked in terms of Mean Absolute Error (MAE), the Apple Watchshowed the lowest value, followed by Xiaomi, Fitbit and the mSafety and that the accuracydid not depend on skin color.

Reconhecimento de gestos usando segmentação de imagens dinâmicas de mãos baseada no modelo de mistura de gaussianas e cor de pele / Gesture recognizing using segmentation of dynamic hand image based on the mixture of Gaussians model and skin colorHebert Luchetti Ribeiro 01 September 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology able to recognize hand gestures from dynamic images to interact with systems. After the image capture segmentation takes place where pixels belonging to the hands are separated from the background based on skin-color segmentation and background extraction. The image preprocessing can be applied before the edge detection. The recognition algorithm uses edges only; therefore it is quick enough for real time. The largest blob from the segmented image will be considered as the hand region. The detected regions are analyzed to determine position and orientation of the hand for each frame. The position and other attributes of the hands are tracked per frame to distinguish a movement from the hand in relation to the background and from other objects in movement, and to extract the information of the movement for the recognition of dynamic gestures. Based in the collected position, movement and indications of position are calculated to recognize a significant gesture.

Human computer interface based on hand gesture recognitionBernard, Arnaud Jean Marc 24 August 2010 (has links)
With the improvement of multimedia technologies such as broadband-enabled HDTV, video on demand and internet TV, the computer and the TV are merging to become a single device. Moreover the previously cited technologies as well as DVD or Blu-ray can provide menu navigation and interactive content.
The growing interest in video conferencing led to the integration of the webcam in different devices such as laptop, cell phones and even the TV set. Our approach is to directly use an embedded webcam to remotely control a TV set using hand gestures. Using specific gestures, a user is able to control the TV. A dedicated interface can then be used to select a TV channel, adjust volume or browse videos from an online streaming server.
This approach leads to several challenges. The first is the use of a simple webcam which leads to a vision based system. From the single webcam, we need to recognize the hand and identify its gesture or trajectory. A TV set is usually installed in a living room which implies constraints such as a potentially moving background and luminance change. These issues will be further discussed as well as the methods developed to resolve them. Video browsing is one example of the use of gesture recognition. To illustrate another application, we developed a simple game controlled by hand gestures.
The emergence of 3D TVs is allowing the development of 3D video conferencing. Therefore we also consider the use of a stereo camera to recognize hand gesture.
