A Study of Knowledge Withholding Intentions in Software Development Teams: The Role of Contextual Factors and Personal CognitionsHuang, Chien-chih 17 January 2009 (has links)
Knowledge withholding intentions (KWI), defined as the likelihood an individual will give less than full effort on knowledge contribution. If every member withholds knowledge in a software development team, it results in poor project performance. However, little research has been conducted to investigate the factors that influence knowledge withholding intentions. The purpose of this paper is to develop a theoretical model based Social Cognitive Theory and extends it with Social Exchange Theory to analyze the antecedents of knowledge withholding intentions from personal cognitions and contextual factors. Furthermore, the contextual influencers are subdivided into dimensions of rational choice, normative conformity, and affective bonding with a comprehensive view. Through a survey of 227 participants who have experience in software development, task interdependence, procedural justice, leader-member exchange, team-member exchange were found to have negative influences on knowledge withholding intentions. On the contrary, knowledge withholding outcome expectations and knowledge withholding self-efficacy were found to have positive influences on knowledge withholding intentions.

Leadership representations in South Korea and the United StatesYoon, Jeeyun 08 November 2010 (has links)
Numerous studies have shown that culture is a critical factor affecting leadership perceptions. Although these studies provide useful information about cultural differences, they overlook the fundamental difference between East Asians and Westerners, a holistic view versus an analytic view. In addition, these studies are based on methodologies in which verbal or pictorial stimuli are presented by researchers under conditions of high capacity, which does not allow other representational differences to be observed. This study investigates leadership representations in South Korea and the United States based on hypotheses about fundamental differences in social cognitive processing among South Koreans and Americans, as revealed in spontaneously generated visual productions. The results suggest that South Koreans have a holistic view, whereas Americans have an analytic view of leadership representations. Implications and future directions for research on cultural differences in leadership representations are discussed.

Konsumtion av kosttillskott bland träningsaktiva : En kvantitativ undersökning om köns- och åldersskillnader och samband med träningsformStrandberg Keijser, Alina January 2015 (has links)
Att konsumera kosttillskott ökar i dagens samhälle. Exempel på kosttillskott är energigivande tillskott, prestationshöjande tillskott samt vitaminer och mineraler. En sammanställning av enkätundersökningar i Sverige visar att 61 % av männen och 41 % av kvinnorna konsumerar kosttillskott. Träningsverksamma upplever att produkterna är välgörande och ger positiva effekter på träningen, trots att riskerna med konsumtion av kosttillskott är omdebatterat och ett delvis obeforskat område. Bland träningsverksamma inom styrketräning förekommer även konsumtion av dopningspreparat. Dopning innebär att påverka eller förändra prestationer med olika substanser. Det finns olika slags dopningspreparat och anabola androgena steroider (AAS) är vanligast. Prevalensen av AAS har ökat under 2000-talet. I uppsatsen redovisas omfattningen av konsumtion av kosttillskott och dopningspreparat i Västmanlands län. Köns- och åldersskillnader samt samband mellan konsumtion och träningsform redovisas. Analyser har genomförts på enkätdata från Västmanlands Idrottsförbund, utifrån deras arbete med anti-dopning i Västmanland. Resultaten visar att det är vanligast att män i 17 – 30 års ålder konsumerar kosttillskott. Sannolikheten för att ha en hög konsumtion av kosttillskott ökar vid styrketräning. Socialkognitiv teori används föra att tolka den sociala aspekten på konsumtionen och ger en djupare förståelse för hur beteendet att konsumera kosttillskott och/eller dopningspreparat kan uppstå hos en individ. / Consuming dietary supplements is common in today's society. Examples of dietary supplements is energizing supplements, performance enhancing supplements and vitamins and minerals. A compilation of surveys in Sweden show that 61% of men and 41% of women consume dietary supplements. Athletes are experiencing that the products are beneficial and provides positive effects on the performance, even though there is a lack of knowledge about all the risks of consuming dietary supplement and a field partly un-researched. Consumption of doping substances also occur among athletes. Doping means to affect or change the performance with various substances. There are different types of doping substances, where anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) are the most common. The prevalence of AAS has increased during the 2000s. The prevalence of the consumption of dietary supplements and doping in Västmanlands län are presented in the present study. Results revealed differences in gender and age and the relationship between consumption and exercise. Analyses have been performed on data from Västmanland Sports Federation, which through its anti-doping work conducted a survey in Västmanlands län. The results show that it is most common among men between the ages 17 – 30 to consume dietary supplements and to consume a few times a week or more often. The likelihood of consuming dietary supplements increases with strength training. Social cognitive theory is being used to interpret the social aspect of consumption and provides a deeper understanding for how a behavior can be developed in an individual.

This exploratory study examined the individual and organizational effects of formerly homeless employee inclusion on members of the homeless shelter community, including shelter directors, formerly homeless employees, professional employees, and shelter residents. The effects of formerly homeless employee inclusion on shelter residents' vicarious self-efficacy were specifically examined. A qualitative case study design was used to gather interview data from six homeless shelters in North Carolina. The interviewees included five shelter directors, three formerly homeless employees, and seven shelter residents. Professional boundary development was correlated with the impact of formerly homeless employee inclusion within the shelter community. There are more benefits than challenges to formerly homeless employee inclusion in homeless shelters. The challenges generally affected the formerly homeless employees themselves, sometimes to the point of addiction relapse. Formerly homeless employee inclusion provides the benefits of self-efficacy, tough love, and understanding and helping for shelter residents. Additional benefits were found for the formerly homeless employees. Benefits and challenges for professional employees were anecdotal and therefore not trustworthy. There are several major implications for professional practice resulting from this study. Shelter residents in the present study consistently viewed formerly homeless employee inclusion as positive. This positive experience may contribute to improved client engagement, retention, and outcomes. The challenges presented were infrequent, and considered manageable by the shelter directors. These findings may encourage other shelter directors to employ formerly homeless individuals, thereby benefitting others who are either experiencing or working to alleviate homelessness. Formerly homeless employee inclusion is also consistent with strengths-based practice and the social justice principle of the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics, as it provides meaningful opportunities for indigenous participation. Future research should focus on further understanding the correlation between formerly homeless employee inclusion and shelter resident outcomes and the effects of formerly homeless employee inclusion on professional shelter employees. / text

In many countries the introduction of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), especially
computers, into schools has been praised as the necessary (although not without problems) course of
action for the qualitative improvement of teaching and learning methodology. However, one of the
greatest barriers inhibiting the successful adoption of a range of strategies to improve learning in a
new technologically enriched framework is resistance from teachers who may feel threatened and disempowered
by the change brought about by the introduction of technology into their classrooms.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors that influence the self-efficacy of teachers in
the foundation phase:
Which factors influence the computer self-efficacy of foundation phase teachers?
What is the relation between the identified factors and the computer self-efficacy of teachers?

All teachers (N=34) in the foundation phase in the central region of Lichtenburg, a town in the
Northwest province of South Africa, participated in the study. They completed a questionnaire, which
consisted of two sections:
The first section determined the teachers' computer self-efficacy.
a The second section identified the possible factors that may influence the computer self efficacy
of foundation phase teachers.
To ensure that all possible data, with regard to factors that might affect teachers' computer self efficacy,
were collected, the researcher also made use of interviews and observations. The data was
analysed by using frequency distributions, Pearson product-moment correlations as well as Analysis
of Variance, (ANOVA).
The results regarding age and computer efficacy was analysed using ANOVA. The results showed a
slight difference in the computer efficacy of the teachers from different age groups. Therefore, it may
be possible to enhance the computer efficacy of teachers from any age group. The results indicated a
relation between the computer self-efficacy of foundation phase teachers and some of the identified
factors, namely formal training, computer experience and school support. The relation was statistically
as well as practically significant. Age and access to a computer did not seem to have a statistically
significant effect on computer self-efficacy.
The results of this study have implications for teacher training. Computer training will be to the benefit
of Foundation phase teachers. Explicit guidance on the choice and use of software and the
integration thereof with teaching methods is essential, because computer technology is an integrated

Health Care Disparities and Chronic Disease Burden: Policy Implications for NGOsObot, Stella S. 15 May 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this capstone is to develop a program to address health literacy among African American adults. The social cognitive theory and the health belief model was used to create a model of an age appropriate, culturally sensitive program with a pre and post test to improve the health literacy in this population. The Community Health Literacy Improvement Program (CHIP) is a pilot program that will consist of a four week didactic intervention focused on combating prose, document, and quantitative health illiteracy. This program will be implemented through a community based nonprofit organization. Participants who complete the CHIP program will be able to identify risk factors for chronic diseases, assess their ability to avoid chronic diseases, and be able to locate community health resources. This proposed intervention will show that community based nonprofit organizations have an important role to play in building community buy in and establishing the agency necessary for community based, culturally sensitive programs such as CHIP to succeed.

Songs of an epidemic : responding to HIV/AIDS through song, poetry and drama in Nakuru, KenyaRådelius, Elias January 2012 (has links)
This study examines the use of songs, poems and drama to raise awareness of, and respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nakuru, Kenya. The primary focus is that of youth-oriented interventions, but additional examples are also examined and analyzed. A qualitative approach is used and the study is based on semi-structured interviews with teachers, performers, students, NGO-representatives and former students conducted during four weeks in November and December 2012. Additionally, songs, poems and dramas have been collected and observed and finally analyzed using a theoretical framework that combines the Health Belief Model, the Social Cognitive Theory as well as principles of the research discipline of Medical Ethnomusicology. The study shows that songs, poems and drama are important methods to communicate messages and play an important role in shaping the local HIV/AIDS discourse. Due to its effectiveness, it is vital that the messages promoted are culturally appropriate as well as correct since the study shows that false information through these methods can hamper a desired behavior change.

Bakgrund: Rehabilitering inom slutenvården innefattar ett samarbete mellan undersköterska och sjukgymnast. Undersköterskor har en viktig roll i rehabiliteringen men det saknas forskning om deras uppfattningar kring sin roll. Syfte: Att undersöka undersköterskors erfarenheter av delaktighet i sjukgymnastisk rehabilitering av patienter på en vårdavdelning inom slutenvården. Metod: En kvalitativ design med induktiv ansats användes. Datainsamlingen gjordes i form av semistrukturerade gruppintervjuer med undersköterskor. Materialet analyserades sedan med hjälp av kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultat: Analysen resulterade i fem kategorier som blev två teman, Känsla av att vara viktiga och god egen tilltro till sin förmåga at utföra rehabiliterande insatser samt Samarbetet kring rehabiliteringen påverkas av individerna och omgivningen. Diskussion: Resultatet visar att undersköterskornas känsla av delaktighet påverkas av konsekvenser, individer, beteende och omgivning vilket kan ses i förhållande till den operanta inlärningsteorin och den socialkognitiva teorin. Slutsats: Undersköterskorna känner sig delaktiga i rehabilitering då de är engagerade, aktivt medverkande och känner att de är till nytta. En svaghet i delaktigheten är att kommunikationen kring rehabiliteringen upplevs vara bristfällig och därmed minskar undersköterskornas medinflytande. Vidare anser författarna att en upprepning av studien behövs samt att det saknas forskning om effekten av undersköterskors arbete och deras uppfattningar kring detta. Assistant nurses have an important role in rehabilitation but there is a lack of research regarding their perceptions of their role. Aim: To investigate the assistant nurses’ experiences of participation in physiotherapy rehabilitation of patients in hospital care. Method: A qualitative design with inductive approach was used. The data was collected through semi-structured group interviews with assistant nurses and the material was analysed using qualitative content analysis. Result: The analysis resulted in five categories which became two themes, Good self-confidence and feeling of being important in the rehabilitation and Collaboration regarding the rehabilitation is affected by the individuals and the environment. Discussion: The assistant nurses’ perceptions of their participation is affected by consequences, individuals, behaviour and environment which is confirmed by the social cognitive theory and the operant conditioning theory. Conclusions: The assistant nurses experience participation in the rehabilitation because they are engaged, actively involved and feel useful. A weakness in their participation is insufficient communication about the rehabilitation. The authors consider that a replication of the study and more research on assistant nurses’ perceptions and the usefulness of their work are required. Mind that Gap!: Exploring a family-based vegetable cooking programme for children and their parentsTrill, David 02 May 2014 (has links)
Increasing fruit and vegetable intake is important to obesity prevention but children’s vegetable intake remains low. This study aimed to enhance parent vegetable serving behaviour and child vegetable intake through an 8-week theory-based family cooking program. Sixty-five families with children aged 9-13 (11.1 ±1.4) were randomized into a home activity program or home activity plus cooking workshop program. There was no significant increase in parent vegetable serving habits or children’s intake. Both interventions enhanced feeding practices (F (1, 63) = 42.09, p=.000, ɳ2=0.40) and reduced perceived barriers (F (1, 63) = 13.01, p=.001, ɳ2=.017). Children in the cooking workshop condition liked vegetables more (F (1, 63) = 3.87, p=.050, ɳ2=0.06) and had greater diet-disease awareness (F (1, 63) = 3.97, p=.050, ɳ2=0.06) at follow-up (statistic). Family engagement in cooking was successful in enhancing some psychosocial measures for both children and parents, particularly for those receiving cooking workshops.
