The manager-subordinate dyad: the relationship between the fit of human values and the personal state of quality of life at work.Fábio Alessandro Affonso Antonio 14 December 2011 (has links)
The relationship between the fit of values and subjective well-being has been identified in past research. However, minor attention has been focused on understanding the direct relationship between conflicting values and quality of work life, especially in the managersubordinate dyad. The theory of leader-member exchange predicts that the leader differentiates his subordinates and thus establishes a distinctive relationship with each of them. To discern between individuals from his team the leader uses, among several possible criteria, the compatibility of features. Leaders and followers who share values establish high quality interactions, generating positive results for each member of the dyad. In this sense, this study questioned as its fundamental problem: what are the relationships between the dyadic compatibility of values of managers and their subordinates and the personal state of quality of work life of managers and subordinates? Studying this relationship, especially in the case of the dyad between manager and subordinate, can promote a better understanding of the dynamics of organizational behavior. That said, this study aimed to (a) investigate the association between the compatibility of subordinates\' personal values and social values (subjective fit) and their personal state of quality of work life, and to (b) investigate the association between the compatibility of the personal values of managers and subordinates (objective fit) and their personal state of quality of work life. For this purpose, a selfadministered electronic survey was sent to the alumni database of the Faculty of Economics, Administration and Accounting from the University of São Paulo. The questionnaire was composed of the instruments PVQ-21 for the definition of human values and BPSO-96 to the measurement of the perception of personal state of quality of work life of managers and subordinates. Sampling was carried out non-probabilistically, obtained by convenience, composing one of the limitations to the generalizability of the results of this study. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using polynomial regression to determine the associations between the compatibility of values in the manager-subordinate dyad and the perceptions of personal state of quality of life at work. From the results, it is possible to consider that the subjective and objective fit of values among members of the managersubordinate dyad is associated with their quality of work life, especially in the conflict dimensions of self-transcendence and self-enhancement from the value theory of Schwartz (1992). Finally, this study proposes the joint use of the algebraic, modular and quadratic indexes of compatibility for the interpretation of the results of regressions on studies of the compatibility of values and other variables, unlike the literature on the subject suggests. In this study, the coefficients of the three models do not contradict. Their magnitudes and signs were conserved in all three cases. In addition, the variables that entered the models were similar. This fact points to a joint reading of the three models so that interpretations of results should produce more informative scenarios than the analysis of an isolated model.

Moderní přístupy a koncepce k plánování rozvoje měst / Modern approaches to the city development planning and conceptionsKostelecká, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
The thesis introduces chosen initiatives that reflect the changing atmosphere and social values of population in the economically well-developed part of the world. The change in the social values is a consequence of deepening socio-cultural and economic interdependence of the regions and the cities in the globalised world. Main presumptions of successful implementation of the initiatives are analysed in order to confront it with the environment of the Czech cities. The main objective of the thesis is an evaluation of the readiness for the usage of these new initiatives in the current Czech city development. There is a visible change in social values among the Czech population under way, however that is typical for its hedonic character. Most of the presumptions are more or less fulfilled with the regional differences. Some of the initiatives have even already been successfully implemented with the positive impact on the environment. Therefore further involvement of similar initiatives could be expected in the future.

Parenting in Chinese immigrant familiesChan, Sing Mei 11 1900 (has links)
This study attempted to link parental beliefs to parenting behaviors and adolescent
outcomes within specific domains. The study also explored whether parental warmth
moderated the relationship between parenting behavior and adolescent outcomes. A sample
of 60 Chinese immigrant families from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan
participated in the study. One primary parent and one adolescent aged between 13 and 18
from each family answered surveys related to parental goals, parenting behaviors and
adolescent competence in the moral, prudential and learning/academic domains. Findings
offer confirmatory evidence for associations between parental goals and parenting behaviors
and between parental goals and adolescent competence in all domains. Parenting behaviors
were related to adolescent competence in the learning/academic domain only. No mediating
effects of parenting behaviors nor moderating effects of parental warmth were found.
Results are discussed in terms of Smetana's (1997) notion of domain-specificity, parental
goal-parenting behavior congruency (Hastings & Grusec, 1998), and age and cultural
relevance in regards to the chain associations found between parental goal, parenting
behavior and adolescent outcomes. / Arts, Faculty of / Social Work, School of / Graduate

Illness and health care in ancient Israel : the role of the social-cultural context in interpreting 2 Chronicles 26:11-23van Eeden, Fay Clare 16 April 2010 (has links)
Understanding illness and health care in the ancient world, and especially within ancient Israel, is not an easy undertaking. Most of the research done on Israelite health care focuses on the identification of disease rather than their sociological implications. This study hypothesises that to truly understand ancient Israel’s thoughts on illness and health care it is important to take the wider social context, in which a sick person would have found himself, into account. This study analyses the illness of King Uzziah (2 Chronicles 26:11-23) against the backdrop of the ancient Near East’s understanding of illness and health care, Israel’s view of Yahweh’s role in illness, as well as the interwovenness between illness and the social values of honour and shame. The notions of purity and impurity and the role they played in Israel’s understanding of illness, as well as the role of the temple and other consultative options are also taken into account in the study. In so doing the study intends to shed some light on the interwovenness between illness and social values in ancient Israel and thus enabling a better understanding of 2 Chronicles 26:11-23 and illness and health care in ancient Israel. Petersson, Anna January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the valuation practices and processes involved in the rapid transformation of centrally located industrial areas into residential spaces. These areas hold significant importance in urban life and contribute essential functions and values to cities and its occupants. However, as more industrial areas are being redeveloped, the risk of losing these valuable aspects are increasing. This study investigates the diverse valuation practices employed by different stakeholders using a case study of the ongoing planning process in Örnsberg industrial area, a small centrally located industrial and commercial zone in southern Stockholm. Qualitative methods were utilized to explore these valuation practices. These included document analysis and semi-structured interviews with local craftsmen, small-scale businesses, non-profit organisations and a city planner. The findings highlight the divergent ways in which Örnsberg is valued, influenced by individual experiences and interests of the stakeholders. Furthermore, it is concluded that formal valuation practices exert a stronger influence in the planning process. Ultimately, the values prioritized by the City of Stockholm in the planning process contribute to the establishment of a new order in Örnsberg, resulting in the displacement of current local occupants and the probable loss of social values.

Work values and attitudes instruction as viewed by secondary trade and industrial education teachersGregson, James Aaron 28 July 2008 (has links)
The literature suggests that work values and attitudes are just as important, if not more so, than cognitive and psychomotor skills. However, there is little data in the literature which actually describes the work values and attitudes that trade and industrial instructors teach and the pedagogical techniques they employ to teach them.
The primary objectives of this study were to identify the work values and attitudes that trade and industrial instructors teach and to describe the pedagogical techniques they use to teach these skills. Another objective of this study was to deter mine whether work values and attitudes are taught incidentally with cognitive and psychomotor skills, or via targeted learning activities.
This study utilized the face-to-face interview technique to collect data. The sample for this study was composed of 5O secondary trade and industrial instructors who were nominated by their administrators as successful in teaching work values and attitudes. Because of the qualitative nature of this study, the analysis explored relationships between the specific occupational area of trade and industrial instructors and the work: values and attitudes they reported teaching. In addition, relationships were explored between the occupational area of the instructors and the pedagogical techniques they employed to teach the work values and attitudes. During analysis, examples and behavioral events provided by the instructors were examined.
The major conclusions of this study were: (1) Instructors directly and indirectly teach numerous types of work: values and attitudes to their students. However, the most emphasized work values and attitude clusters were Ambitious, Cooperative/Helpful, Accurate/Quality of Work, Dependable/ Reliable/Responsible, and Dedicated/Devoted/Honest/ Loyal/Conscientious. (2) Instructors teach work: values and attitudes that have been identified in the literature as most important. Though it became evident that instructors emphasized some work values and attitudes more than others, all the identified work values and attitudes have been recognized in the literature as important. (3) The instructors reported using several different pedagogical strategies to teach work values and attitudes. The most frequently identified pedagogical strategies were: reward structure, group discussion, one on one counseling, role modeling, and role playing. (4) The majority of these secondary trade and industrial instructors taught work values and attitudes incidentally with cognitive and psychomotor skills. (5) These secondary trade and industrial instructors used both democratic and indoctrinational pedagogical techniques extensively to teach work values and attitudes. / Ed. D.

Karakteropvoeding van risiko-leerders in die Wes-KaapSpamer, Christina Johanna 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEd)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: “… education must seek to help pupils become morally just individuals” (Waghid,
2004b:535).
South Africa, as a fairly young democracy, faces many challenges. Education of its
youth into adults that can fulfil their obligations in a democratic society is but one of
these challenges. A democracy can only be successful when a country’s citizens
internalise basic values such as mutual respect and responsibility. Newspapers and
news reports unfortunately tell of increasing moral decay amongst the youth of South
Africa.
In this research, various models of value education are critically evaluated in order to
determine the best model for establishing values in the youth. Character education is
discussed as a balanced and comprehensive approach to value education, and critical
comments on the Manifesto on Values, Education and Democracy attempt to show its
relevance for value education in practice. The increase in social problems such as
poverty, single-parent families and AIDS orphans, leads to an increase in “at-riskchildren”
in South Africa. This study therefore also investigates possible ways in
which teachers can contribute to instilling positive values in at-risk learners.
The establishment, development and internalisation of values are a long and intricate
process in which schools, parents and society are all important stakeholders. This
research shows the importance of cooperation between all role players to instil values
in South Africa’s young people and that the process of value education slowly but
surely shows results.
Key concepts: values, value education, character education, youth at risk / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: “Democratic citizenship requires that people cultivate mutual respect, warmth,
friendship, trust, self-respect, dignity, generosity and compassion towards each other”
(Waghid, 2004b:536).
slaag as basiese waardes soos respek en verantwoordelikheid by landsburgers
geïnternaliseer is.
opvoeders positiewe waardes by risiko-leerders kan vestig.
is.
Trefwoorde: waardes, waardeopvoeding, karakteropvoeding, risiko-leerders

Culture of indifference : dilemmas of the Filipina domestic helpers in Hong KongKennelly, Estelle M. January 2008 (has links)
In this study, an examination of the everyday experiences of the contract migrant Filipina domestic helpers exposes a culture of indifference which pervades the Hong Kong society on all levels--individual, community, and judiciary. At the centre of the abuses inflicted upon the Helpers is the employment contract with extraordinarily restrictive terms which promotes abuse by many employers. This study also looks at the transnational informal social infrastructure which has been organized by the Filipino community to mediate the hostile working environment engendered by the indifference of the global economic and political climate upon their lives. Faced with the task of implementing new policies for controlling labour migration into Hong Kong, the legislators have focused on the end result and finding the means with which to accomplish their goal. Embedded within this process are unexamined cultural mores and practices. Although the starting point is to benefit the community, by providing domestic helpers to serve the middle and upper class households, too often the abusive consequences to individual migrants are ignored as the women become the means to an end. Migration has often been viewed as an aberration to the notion of the sedentary community. Treated as an anomaly, it is the migrant who problematizes simple theoretical positions of social organization and structure. The migrant is always treated as the one who does not conform to the ideal community and is conveniently merged into existing social categories, such as the lower status of women in Hong Kong, and the lower status of domestic workers -- relegated thereby to the periphery of the society's consciousness.
