Using identity politics to address artworld issues : a case study of the New Initiatives in Film program at the National Film Board of Canada

The Canadian government introduced its Multicultural and Employment Equity policies in a series of attempts to induce federally-controlled institutions to reflect the racial diversity of the Canadian population in their programs and workforces. This is a case study of one institution's response to these policies. It examines the implementation of the six-year New Initiatives in Film (NIF) program begun in 1990 by the now-defunct women's filmmaking unit, Studio D of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and exposes the fault lines along which the goals of the NFB's various constituent parts clashed and meshed with the diverse goals of various parties in NIF's target communities (i.e. "emergent aboriginal and 'of colour' women filmmakers"). I argue that because the NIF program was structured according to the politics of identity ("race" in this case), "artworld" issues of unfair hiring and funding practices in the Canadian film industry, became distorted and expressed as issues of identity. Obfuscating the professional dynamics in the world of Canadian filmmaking by using "race" as an organizing principle did not, in the long-term, assure the sustained inclusion of excluded groups within mainstream institutions. A more effective strategy, the data suggests, would have been for underrepresented groups to cultivate alliances with professionals in the filmmaking industry based on concrete occupational, rather than hypothetical race-based interests.

Perception of sport appropriateness as a function of gender and culture

According to Metheny (1965), people's impressions of the acceptability of sport for women varies across several factors, including culture and gender. In this study, 206 prospective physical education teachers from Canada and Kenya were questioned about their perceptions of gender appropriateness of various sports. They completed Likert-type questionnaires related to sport/physical activities found in their respective university curricula. For those sports that appeared in both countries, responses were compared (2 x 2 ANOVA) for effects of culture and gender. Gender differences were also addressed within each culture. / Results revealed that Canadian respondents perceived fewer sports to be on the extremes of the male-female continuum than did the Kenyan respondents. Females in both cultures considered more sports to be appropriate for both male and female participation than did their male counterparts. However, Canadian and Kenyan respondents, both male and female, unanimously perceived some sports to be primarily appropriate for males and others primarily appropriate for females. / The study supports Metheny's contention of cultural variance in perceptions of the gender appropriateness of sports. Although many sports that had been considered inappropriate for females in 1964 are today considered to be androgynous, especially by Canadians, some gender stereotyping still remains to be overcome. Implications for physical education teachers are suggested.

The relationship of socio-cultural contextual factors in schools with academic achievement in adolescents of high ability

This study identified school and district level variables relevant to the relationship among advanced academic achievement, as defined by a score of 3, 4, or 5 on at least one Advanced Placement exam, and high school context, opportunities for social support and advanced academics, and district support for high ability students in grades K-12. Using school and district-level data from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), district level data on services for high ability students from the IDOE Division of Exceptional Learners, and school-level data from College Board, 49 variables are described for 339 public high schools. A hierarchical linear regression was applied to 15 independent variables thought to be most relevant to the explanation of the variance among high schools. After review, a second hierarchical regression was conducted with 9 retained independent variables explaining 80% of the variance in high performance. The retained variables included size of the graduating class, SAT average, demographic classification according to local population density, percentage of the community with less than a high school education, number of different AP exams offered by the school, ratio of the number of students scoring between 55 and 80 on the math portion of the PSAT to the number of graduates, ratio of the number of students taking SAT Subject Tests to the number of graduates, percentage of the school corporation enrollment identified as high ability, and the number of grade levels and subject areas in which advanced instruction differentiated for high ability students was offered for at least 150 minutes per week. The variables included in the first regression are delineated for the highest 34 (10%) and lowest 34 (10%) performing schools on the dependent variable to construct profiles of a high and low performing school. High performance is limited in small and rural schools. The overarching finding is that schools make a significant difference in the opportunities and development of high performance in adolescents of high ability. Future research directions are suggested and implications of the findings for policymakers are discussed. / Department of Educational Psychology

The thesis is about the re-incorporation of women, on feminist terms, in corporate law and structure. Working from the idea of feminism as a theory about exclusion, the thesis endeavours to include women's voices in how the dominant discourse shapes corporations and the securities markets. Moreover, it attempts to capture the feminist continuum and use it as a critique of the existence of the separate entity of the corporation and limited liability. The thesis also joins the corporate governance debate on feminist terms, reshaping its scope to include feminist aspirations. The market for securities and insider trading are also subject to a feminist analysis and the problems in policing and preventing insider trading are rethought through a feminist lens.

The family meeting as an instrument for the spiritual care of palliative patients and their families.

Spiritual care is considered to be an important aspect of palliative care however; there has been much debate about the definition of spirituality. In this study a broad definition of spirituality has been utilized. Spiritual needs of palliative patients have been identified. Although evidence relating to bereavement outcomes supports the concept of working with family groups in the provision of holistic palliative care, only one family focused model of spiritual care was identified in the literature and no assessment of the efficacy of this model was found. The needs of staff in the provision of spiritual care have also been found to be important. The objectives of this study were to implement a family meeting model of care to assess it’s efficacy as an instrument for the provision of spiritual care from the perspective of palliative patients, family members and palliative care staff and to consider implications, if any for the inclusion of this model of care in the regular palliative care service. This qualitative study was informed by interpretivism and hermeneutic phenomenology. Ricoeur’s Theory of Interpretation was utilized in the interpretation of data. Participants were recruited through two metropolitan palliative care services. Twelve family meetings were facilitated by the researcher. Subsequently forty-seven patients and family members individually participated in in-depth interviews in which they described their experience of the family meeting and any outcomes they had observed. Fourteen staff members participated each in a semi-structured interview in which they described observed outcomes of the family meeting, their process of recruiting patient participants for the study and insights about the suitability of this intervention for regular palliative care services. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed utilizing Ricoeur’s Theory of Interpretation and with the assistance of qualitative data management software. The most commonly identified outcomes for patient and family member participants were: experience of increased openness of communication, positive and constructive feelings and emotions, gaining new understandings and strengthening or renewal of significant relationships. Their experience of the meeting facilitation was generally positive. These outcomes suggest that spiritual care was provided that had not been made available to these people in the current system. Staff reported positive outcomes for patient and family member participants and considered that this type of intervention would meet a need within the palliative care service. Barriers to implementation such as funding priorities, staff numbers and time were identified. This original study has added to our understanding of the value of working with family units in the provision of spiritual care in palliative care services. Further research such as the application of this intervention to larger and less homogenous populations, the evaluation of long term benefits to family members and ways of identifying families most in need of this intervention are needed. Inequalities in levels of development between regions within a country are frequently regarded as a problem. The magnitude of the problem is more severe in developing countries than in developed countries. Zimbabwe, as a developing country, is no exception and the country is characterized by severe regional inequalities. This research is concerned with the spatial patterns of socio-economic development in Zimbabwe. The composite index method was used to rank administrative districts of Zimbabwe according to level of development. The composite indices together with socio-economic characteristics were used to demarcate the administrative districts into development regions according to Friedmann's (1966) model. Attention was given to the spatial development policies applied in Zimbabwe. Friedmann's (1966) guidelines, for the development of the different regional types in his model, were applied to the Zimbabwean spatial economy. Work, time and rhythm : investigating contemporary 'time squeeze'

In contemporary capitalist economies such as the UK, it is commonly held that an increasing number of people and households experience anxiety over time and symptoms of 'time squeeze'. Existing accounts of the character and causes of this phenomenon are rather one-dimensional and lacking in nuance, however. In part, this is because they typically lack any substantial theoretical engagement with the concept of time itself. Accordingly, this research aims to provide a more complex and contextual account of experiences of working time (both paid and unpaid), and to investigate how and why experiences of time squeeze vary between individuals and social groups. This is achieved by calling upon an enriched understanding of time, and employing an instrumental case study built around a set of 50 semi-structured interviews with employees working in Oxford University's central IT department and four of its constituent colleges. The empirical findings reveal that the (quantitative) extent and (qualitative) nature of participants' temporal anxieties vary with occupation, social class, gender, age and family status, as well as the importance of institutional and local context. Furthermore, they demonstrate that contemporary time squeeze is generated by a variety of causal mechanisms relating to the duration, tempo and timing of both paid employment and unpaid reproductive work, and their intersections with the personal, natural, social, institutional and technological rhythms that variously constitute everyday life.

A Atenção Primária atinge cerca de 50% dos brasileiros, tornando-se um local hábil para a promoção de estratégias em AF. O Breve Aconselhamento é um exemplo potencial para aumentar os níveis de AF da população, melhorar a Qualidade de Vida (QdV) e ser econômico. Mas pouco se sabe sobre a efetividade desse tipo de intervenção no Brasil e, um método para verificá-la é por meio da análise econômica de custo-utilidade que fornece o Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALY) ganho. O objetivo do estudo foi comparar o custo-utilidade incremental de uma intervenção de Breve Aconselhamento para a prática de atividade física (BA), de uma estratégia de Indicação para a Prática de Atividade Física supervisionada (IPAF), e de um grupo Controle e, verificar a influência das intervenções sobre o percentual de fisicamente ativos em adultos usuários de unidades do Programa Saúde da Família (PSF) de Rio Claro-SP, durante 12 meses. O estudo é de característica longitudinal, composto por 75 usuários da unidade do PSF de Rio Claro - SP. Para a obtenção dos valores de QALY utilizou-se o questionário SF-36. Diante dessa conjuntura, marcada, sobretudo, pela estabilidade econômica, tanto o setor público quanto o privado, empenham-se na divulgação da cultura do poupar. As instituições visam, no entanto, a criação de uma mudança cultural nos indivíduos, que sairiam da condição de deficitários para a de superavitários, para utilizar o jargão economicista. Esta pesquisa, portanto, tem como intuito compreender o avanço das finanças no Brasil por meio da educação financeira.
