Series Solutions of Polarized Gowdy Universes

Brusaferro, Doniray 01 January 2017 (has links)
Einstein's field equations are a system of ten partial differential equations. For a special class of spacetimes known as Gowdy spacetimes, the number of equations is reduced due to additional structure of two dimensional isometry groups with mutually orthogonal Killing vectors. In this thesis, we focus on a particular model of Gowdy spacetimes known as the polarized T3 model, and provide an explicit solution to Einstein's equations.

Spectral approximation with matrices issued from discretized operators

Silva Nunes, Ana Luisa 11 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, we consider the numerical solution of a large eigenvalue problem in which the integral operator comes from a radiative transfer problem. It is considered the use of hierarchical matrices, an efficient data-sparse representation of matrices, especially useful for large dimensional problems. It consists on low-rank subblocks leading to low memory requirements as well as cheap computational costs. We discuss the use of the hierarchical matrix technique in the numerical solution of a large scale eigenvalue problem arising from a finite rank discretization of an integral operator. The operator is of convolution type, it is defined through the first exponential-integral function and hence it is weakly singular. We access HLIB (Hierarchical matrices LIBrary) that provides, among others, routines for the construction of hierarchical matrix structures and arithmetic algorithms to perform approximative matrix operations. Moreover, it is incorporated the matrix-vector multiply routines from HLIB, as well as LU factorization for preconditioning, into SLEPc (Scalable Library for Eigenvalue Problem Computations) in order to exploit the available algorithms to solve eigenvalue problems. It is also developed analytical expressions for the approximate degenerate kernels and deducted error upper bounds for these approximations. The numerical results obtained with other approaches to solve the problem are used to compare with the ones obtained with this technique, illustrating the efficiency of the techniques developed and implemented in this work

Studies On The Perturbation Problems In Quantum Mechanics

Koca, Burcu 01 April 2004 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, the main perturbation problems encountered in quantum mechanics have been studied.Since the special functions and orthogonal polynomials appear very extensively in such problems, we emphasize on those topics as well. In this context, the classical quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillators described mathematically by the one-dimensional Schr&uml / odinger equation have been treated perturbatively in both finite and infinite intervals, corresponding to confined and non-confined systems, respectively.

Sumiranje redova sa specijalnim funkcijama

Vidanović Mirjana 11 July 2003 (has links)
Pomoću ovih formula sumirani su i redovi sa integralima trigonometrijskih i specijalnih funkcija.</p> / <p>This dissertation deals with the summation of series over special functions. Through<br />trigonometric series these series are reduced to series in terms of Riemann zeta and<br />related functions. They can be brought in closed form in some cases, i.e. infinite<br />series are expressed as finite sums. Closed form formulas make it possible to accele&shy;<br />rate the convergence of some series, and have many applications in various scientific<br />fields as well. For example, closed form solutions of the boundary value problem in<br />mathematical physics can be obtained. Summation formulas include particular cases<br />known from the literature, but because of their general character one can come to<br />new sums. By means of these formul&aacute;is the sums of series over integrals containing<br />trigonometric or special functions have been found.</p>

Spectral approximation with matrices issued from discretized operators / Approximation spectrale de matrices issues d’opérateurs discrétisés

Silva Nunes, Ana Luisa 11 May 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, we consider the numerical solution of a large eigenvalue problem in which the integral operator comes from a radiative transfer problem. On The Q-analysis Of Q-hypergeometric Difference Equation

Sevinik Adiguzel, Rezan 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, a fairly detailed survey on the q-classical orthogonal polynomials of the Hahn class is presented. Such polynomials appear to be the bounded solutions of the so called qhypergeometric difference equation having polynomial coefficients of degree at most two. The central idea behind our study is to discuss in a unified sense the orthogonality of all possible polynomial solutions of the q-hypergeometric difference equation by means of a qualitative analysis of the relevant q-Pearson equation. To be more specific, a geometrical approach has been used by taking into account every posssible rational form of the polynomial coefficients, together with various relative positions of their zeros, in the q-Pearson equation to describe a desired q-weight function on a suitable orthogonality interval. Therefore, our method differs from the standard ones which are based on the Favard theorem and the three-term recurrence relation.

On the Theory of Zeta-functions and L-functions

Awan, Almuatazbellah 01 January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis we provide a body of knowledge that concerns Riemann zeta-function and its generalizations in a cohesive manner. In particular, we have studied and mentioned some recent results regarding Hurwitz and Lerch functions, as well as Dirichlet's L-function. We have also investigated some fundamental concepts related to these functions and their universality properties. In addition, we also discuss different formulations and approaches to the proof of the Prime Number Theorem and the Riemann Hypothesis. These two topics constitute the main theme of this thesis. For the Prime Number Theorem, we provide a thorough discussion that compares and contrasts Norbert Wiener's proof with that of Newman's short proof. We have also related them to Hadamard's and de la Vallee Poussin's original proofs written in 1896. As far as the Riemann Hypothesis is concerned, we discuss some recent results related to equivalent formulations of the Riemann Hypothesis as well as the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.

The natural transform decomposition method for solving fractional differential equations

Ncube, Mahluli Naisbitt 09 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, we use the Natural transform decomposition method to obtain approximate analytical solution of fractional differential equations. This technique is a combination of decomposition methods and natural transform method. We use the Adomian decomposition, the homotopy perturbation and the Daftardar-Jafari methods as our decomposition methods. The fractional derivatives are considered in the Caputo and Caputo- Fabrizio sense. / Mathematical Sciences / M. Sc. (Applied Mathematics)

General Nonlinear-Material Elasticity in Classical One-Dimensional Solid Mechanics

Giardina, Ronald Joseph, Jr 05 August 2019 (has links)
We will create a class of generalized ellipses and explore their ability to define a distance on a space and generate continuous, periodic functions. Connections between these continuous, periodic functions and the generalizations of trigonometric functions known in the literature shall be established along with connections between these generalized ellipses and some spectrahedral projections onto the plane, more specifically the well-known multifocal ellipses. The superellipse, or Lam\'{e} curve, will be a special case of the generalized ellipse. Applications of these generalized ellipses shall be explored with regards to some one-dimensional systems of classical mechanics. We will adopt the Ramberg-Osgood relation for stress and strain ubiquitous in engineering mechanics and define a general internal bending moment for which this expression, and several others, are special cases. We will then apply this general bending moment to some one-dimensional Euler beam-columns along with the continuous, periodic functions we developed with regard to the generalized ellipse. This will allow us to construct new solutions for critical buckling loads of Euler columns and deflections of beam-columns under very general engineering material requirements without some of the usual assumptions associated with the Ramberg-Osgood relation.
