Can cultures really change? : the impact of specialist sports college status on an English high school

Solvason, Carla L. January 2009 (has links)
This research explores the development of a Specialist Sports College within a framework of educational justice. It asks whether the development of the Specialist School can really mean equality of opportunity for all children, when some schools will, as a result, receive considerably more funding than others. It also considers the contentious policy location of the Specialist Sports College, found somewhere between ideologies of health and fitness for all and the development of elite sportsmen and women of the future. By investigating the transformation of one school into a Specialist College using a Case Study approach, this research explores the concept of transforming a school’s culture, and questions the Government’s expectations within this concept arena. What are the micro, lived effects of the macro policy of the Specialist School? By exploring the key themes that emerged through the data I conclude that transforming cultures is a far more complicated task than the Government perceive and also that the introduction of a single subject specialism may, in reality, lead to more division than unity. I also question whether PE can ever be a subject area that truly offers the possibility of success for all.

An analysis of volunteer coaching in youth sports

Cakebread, Christopher C. January 2000 (has links)
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / It has been estimated that 37 million children play nonschool youth sports in the United States. Each child likely will have some contact with a volunteer nonschool youth sport coach during their sports experience. This study was developed as a means of determining the nature of volunteerism as it applies to volunteer coaches. As well the study examines the traits and skills that volunteer coaches believe to be appropriate for this coaching activity. Preliminary research was conducted to identify the most significant beliefs that influenced adults to volunteer as coaches. Based upon the findings of the preliminary research, further systematic research was needed in order to construct and administer a questionnaire instrument to volunteer coaches. In order to assess the reliability of the questionnaire, a principal axis factor analysis with varimax rotation was performed. The analysis resulted in a six-factor solution for eighteen items. An examination of the clustered items revealed a shared theme within each cluster. An independent samples t-test and zero order correlation coefficient analysis were performed for three dependent variables. Research was conducted with the cooperation of USA Hockey at a number of Intermediate-level coaching clinics held in the state of Massachusetts. Results indicate that volunteers are influenced by altruism, a love of the sport of ice hockey, and self-interest -- as many volunteer coaches have children on the teams they coached. Volunteer coaches appear to follow the positive coaching mandates of USA Hockey with a focus on developing the skills of the players and placing little emphasis on winning. Weaknesses appear to be a lack of a consistent curriculum for coaches to utilize and a lack of skilled coaches to teach the intricacies of the game of ice hockey. / 2031-01-01

Kocourek, Petr January 2015 (has links)
Title: Intermission of the game on the grounds of breaking the rules in young-junior boys categories. Objectives: This diploma thesis aims to find out intervals of the game and intervals of the intermission of the game in young-junior basketball and youth boys basketball matches, and to compare the detected data. The other aim is to discover the reasons leading to the intermission of the game of each catogory during these matches. Methods: As a research method, the method of observation of the video recordings of youth basketball and young-junior basketball matches from the website tvcom.cz was chosen. Using the basic statistic and arithmetic methods, the measured data were processed statistically and, consequently, graphically also. Results: It was discovered that children playing the young-junior basketball have the shortest average interval of the continuous game in all studied categories and that this interval is shorter than the interval of the average duration of the intermission of the game during young-junior basketball matches. The most frequent reason for the intermission of the game in all categories is a personal foul of the player and a ball, or a player with a ball out of bonds.
