Dans cette étude exploratoire descriptive sur la théorie de l’attachement et la théorie de l’activation, le premier objectif était de déterminer quels types de configurations familiales en fonction de l’identité de la figure d’attachement et de l’identité de la figure d’activation se retrouvaient dans les familles biparentales hétérosexuelles et dans quelles proportions elles étaient représentées. Le second objectif était de vérifier les liens présents entre les configurations familiales et la qualité de l’attachement et la qualité de l’activation pour les deux parents. La situation risquée (RS) et la situation étrangère (SSP) ont été conduites auprès de 175 dyades père-enfant et dyades mère-enfant lorsque les enfants étaient âgés de 12 à 20 mois. Les résultats démontrent la présence de neuf types de configurations familiales dans l’échantillon. Il ressort également de cette étude que seul l’attachement au père dépend du type de configurations familiales. La qualité de l’attachement à la mère ainsi que la qualité de la relation d’activation aux deux parents sont indépendantes des configurations familiales. / The first goal, in this exploratory-descriptive study on attachment theory and activation relationship theory, was to define the different varieties of family configurations in two-parent heterosexual families, based on the identity of the attachment figure and the identity of the activation figure, and also to determine what proportions they represented. The second goal was to identify the links between family configurations and quality of attachment and activation with regards to both parents. The Risky Situation (RS) and the Strange Situation (SS) were conducted with 175 father-child and mother-child dyads for children between the ages of 12 to 20 months. Results indicated there were 9 types of family configurations within our sample. Our findings also indicate that only father attachment was dependant on the type of family configuration. The quality of attachment to the mother and the quality of relationship activation to the two parents were independent of family configuration.

Literature and medicine are not usually seen as related disciplines, but scholars have already begun producing fruitful scholarship regarding historical and aesthetic interactions between them. This thesis adds to that scholarship by examining medicine and literature in nineteenth-century Britain. More specifically, Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an English Opium-Eater and Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde both use nineteenth-century medical case conventions to tell their stories. Furthermore, because both works deal with addiction, divided selves, and the power that physical substances can have on morality and character, these two works provide an excellent comparison coming 65 years apart. As such, they are a great point from which to begin looking more closely at how the interactions between medicine and literature evolved during the nineteenth-century in Britain. This thesis examines the role that "scientific" discourse has played in medicine and literature as interpretive disciplines, the rhetorical techniques and innovations surrounding the intersection of the two disciplines, and the authority that each discipline derived by implicitly borrowing ideological assumptions and textual forms from the other. Confessions is a wonderful example of a Romantic, autobiographical text that clearly uses the medical case study conventions; in fact, De Quincey was often cited in the years following the publication of Confessions as an authority on opium and its uses. By the time Jekyll and Hyde was published, however, a work like Confessions could no longer hold its own in medical debates. The professional institutions of medicine and literature had changed too much. Hence, by analyzing these two works side-by-side, I intend to illustrate different narrative approaches to similar issues at the beginning and end of the century. More importantly, I hope to use these texts in conjunction with specific medical case histories to discuss each text's reliance on interdisciplinary authority.

"This, too, was myself": Empathic Unsettlement and the Victim/Perpetrator Binary in Robert Louis Stevenson's <em>Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde</em>Bruner, Brittany 01 March 2017 (has links)
At first glance, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a tale that reinforces binaries. One of these is the self/other binary that is central to David Hume's and Adam Smith's theories of sympathy that conceive of a self imaginatively identifying and experiencing fellow-feeling for an other. However, this notion is complicated because Jekyll and Hyde are the same person. Further, many critics argue that Stevenson actually challenges binary thinking. While Hume and Smith do not challenge the self/other binary in connection with sympathy, trauma theory critics do challenge a self/other binary that lies at the heart of sympathy: the victim/perpetrator binary. Noted trauma theorist Dominick LaCapra develops a method of empathizing called empathic unsettlement where a secondary witness listens with empathy to a victim's traumatic witness while recognizing the difference of his or her position as a witness. He argues that perpetrators may also warrant understanding, but this understanding does not come through empathy. However, one of the hallmarks of empathic unsettlement is that it does not neatly resolve or replace traumatic narratives. Therefore, I argue that empathic unsettlement could also be a useful method for allowing a perpetrator to witness. While practicing empathic unsettlement for a perpetrator may not be worth the risk in real life, performing a thought experiment in literature can test how using empathy might provide a better way to theorize perpetration. Using two witnesses who attempt to practice empathic unsettlement for Jekyll and Hyde, Dr. Hastie Lanyon (who fails), and Mr. Gabriel John Utterson (who succeeds), I will show how empathic unsettlement could be used for both a victim and perpetrator to tease out the complexities of assessing a traumatic situation.

Capture-évolution-éjection de particules par des systèmes binaires (étoile-planète, étoile binaire, étoile-trou noir supermassif, trou noir binaire, ...). Dans une première partie, en utilisant une généralisation de l'application de Kepler, nous décrivons, au travers du cas de 1P/Halley, la dynamique chaotique des comètes dans le système solaire. Le système binaire, alors considéré, est composé du Soleil et de Jupiter. L'application symplectique utilisée permet de rendre compte des différentes caractéristiques de la dynamique : trajectoires chaotiques, îlots invariants de KAM associés aux résonances avec le mouvement orbital de Jupiter,... Nous avons déterminé de façon exacte et semi-analytique l'énergie échangée (fonction kick) entre le système solaire et la comète de Halley à chaque passage au périhélie. Cette fonction kick est la somme des contributions des problèmes à trois corps Soleil-planète-comète associés aux 8 planètes du système solaire. Nous avons montré que chacune de ces contributions peut être décomposée en un terme keplerien associé au potentiel gravitationnel de la planète et un terme dipolaire dû au mouvement du soleil autour du centre de masse du système solaire. Dans une deuxième partie, nous avons utilisé la généralisation de l'application de Kepler pour étudier la capture de particules de matière noire au sein des systèmes binaires. La section efficace de capture a été calculée et montre que la capture à longue portée est bien plus efficace que la capture due aux rencontres proches. Nous montrons également l'importance de la vitesse de rotation du système binaire dans le processus de capture. Notamment, un système binaire en rotation ultrarapide accumulera en son sein une densité de matière jusqu'à 10^4 fois celle du flot de matière le traversant. Dans la dernière partie, en intégrant les équations du mouvement du problème à trois corps restreint plan, nous avons étudié l'éjection des particules capturées par un système binaire. Dans le cas d'un système binaire dont les deux corps sont de masses comparables, alors que la majorité des particules sont éjectées immédiatement, nous montrons, sur les sections de Poincaré, que la trace des particules restant indéfiniment aux abords du système binaire forme une structure fractale caractéristique d'un répulseur étrange associé à un système chaotique ouvert. Cette structure fractale, également présente dans l'espace réel, a une forme de spirale à deux bras partageant des similitudes avec les structures spiralées des galaxies comme la nôtre. / This work is devoted to the study of the restricted 3-body problem and particularly to the capture-evolution-ejection process of particles by binary systems (star-planet, binary star, star-supermassive black hole, binary black hole, ...). First, using a generalized Kepler map, we describe, through the case of 1P/Halley, the chaotic dynamics of comets in the Solar System. The here considered binary system is the couple Sun-Jupiter. The symplectic application we use allows us to depict the main characteristics of the dynamics: chaotic trajectories, KAM islands associated to resonances with Jupiter orbital motion, ... We determine exactly and semi-analytically the exchange of energy (kick function) between the Solar System and 1P/Halley at its passage at perihelion. This kick function is the sum of the contributions of 3-body problems Sun-planet-comet associated to the eight planets. We show that each one of these contributions can be split in a keplerian term associated to the planet gravitational potential and a dipolar term due to the Sun movement around Solar System center of mass. We also use the generalized Kepler map to study the capture of dark matter particles by binary systems. We derive the capture cross section showing that long range capture is far more efficient than close encounter induced capture. We show the importance of the rotation velocity of the binary in the capture process. Particularly, a binary system with an ultrafast rotation velocity accumulates a density of captured matter up to 10^4 times the density of the incoming flow of matter. Finally, by direct integration of the planar restricted 3-body problem equations of motion, we study the ejection of particles initially captured by a binary system. In the case of a binary with two components of comparable masses, although almost all the particles are immediately ejected, we show, on Poincaré sections, that the trace of remaining particles in the vicinity of the binary form a fractal structure associated to a strange repeller associated to chaotic open systems. This fractal structure, also present in real space, has a shape of two arm spiral sharing similarities with spiral structures observed in galaxies such as the Milky Way.
