A study of the effects of the maintenance system at an open cast iron ore mine

Setzkorn, Kevin Anthony January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering Johannesburg 2017 / The study assesses the drilling, loading and trucking stages of the mining cycle of an iron ore mine situated in the Northern Cape province of South Africa for the period of 1 January to 30 June 2011. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of increasing reliability and maintainability of mining equipment in an effort to increase throughput of iron ore. The data processing indicated that both availability and utilisation are contributing to the sub-optimal performance of the mine. Data regarding reliability (MTBF), maintainability (MTTR), planned and unplanned maintenance was analysed, and this provided input for the simulation model. The intention of the simulation model is to simulate scenarios of proposed improvement in MTBF and MTTR through increasing planned maintenance activities. A simulation model provides insight regarding where to invest in interventions. It is determined that the drilling equipment is the problem area. / MT2018

Modelos matemáticos para o problema de empacotamento em faixas de peças irregulares / Mathematical models for the irregular packing problem

Rodrigues, Marcos Okamura 11 February 2015 (has links)
The irregular strip packing problem consists of cutting a set of two-dimensional pieces from an object of fixed width using the smallest possible length. Despite its economic importance for many industrial sectors, few exact studies have been made on this problem due to its difficulty of resolution. Recently, Toledo et al. (2013) proposed a mixed-integer model to this problem in which the pieces are placed on a grid. This model has worked successfully proving the optimality for instances up to 21 pieces. However, the model has a large number of non-overlapping constraints, which grows quickly in accordance with the discretization resolution and number of distinct pieces. In this work, we propose new mathematical formulations based on this model in order to reduce the number of constraints. In the first approach, we present two reduced models that have shown to be effective for instances with few repetitions of pieces. In the second approach, it was proposed a clique covering model for the problem. This model achieved a greater or equal performance than the literature for all instances, getting an optimal solution for instances up to 28 pieces.

From the social cognitivism perspective, in theoretical Linguistics Textual, we argue that the word-image overlapping referents are introduced, reproduced or modified not only by co-textual tracks, but also by the social cognitivism context-interactive, and that this process recategorisen referential action is an important strategy for production of humor as it brings out the unexpected, breaking with expectations enabled the reading frame of the first pictures of the strips. The data that form the corpus for this research consist of adult-themed strips, assembled and published the book Gatão de Meia-idade (1995), written by Miguel Paiva. The results showed that the referential processes are triggered not only by means of cotextual tracks, on the interrelationship between word-image, but also by the social cognitivism context, requiring active participation of the reader in the construction of senses and new references. It was also found that the relative, to be recategorisen in textual template, contribute to an outcome or unexpected situation, unleashing the humor in the strips / Este trabalho objetiva investigar, numa perspectiva sociocognitivo-interacional, no âmbito da Linguística Textual, estratégias de construção e reconstrução de referentes (objetos cognitivos e discursivos) em tiras cômicas, bem como averiguar, nesse gênero textual, o papel dos referentes na deflagração do humor.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Andreia Honório da Cunha.pdf: 4474720 bytes, checksum: 8c7333413914dadc283e7402e4149638 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-03-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research has for theme the multimodal textual and discursive organization of strip comics genre dealing with sense complementary among words and image. Its situated in “Text and discourse in oral and written modalities” of the Program of Postgraduated Studies in Portuguese Language by PUC – SP. Sociossemiotic area embases the research and has as its primary theoretical basis the Grammar of Visual Design, written by Kress and van Leeuwen, (1996). It privileges the study of the multimodal genre and has as its theme the textual and discursive organization of comics forms expressed in strips. The general objective of this research is to contribute to the improvement of the multimodal studies in brazilian strips as well as the pertinence of the social problems exposed in these texts. To accomplish this goal, the narrative construction of the strips must be verified, including the graphical and verbal-descriptive examination of the semiotic landscape as well as the graphical and verbal-descriptive analysis of the metafunctions: representational, interactional and compositional. By means of these actions the value of the information subdivided and positioned in given and new, considering the opposition of the semioses expressed in the right and left laterality and ideal and real is considered, considering the opposition of the semioses expressed above and below the frame. This approach includes the saliencies and subjectivities related to the choices of the producer in the exposition of the frameworks. By means of the above, we examine the permissive transgression and rupture of the performance of the sarcastic and the jocose, which, finally, refer to both the laughter and the critic of the problematic exposed and in the proposal to be discussed and reflected. In this context, the investigation is methodologically exposing the theoretical frameworks and applying them to the practice favoring the identification, the understanding and the sensitization to the notoriety of the amplification in the production of meanings established in this relation of complementarity of the communicative semiotic resources / Esta dissertação tem por tema a organização textual discursiva multimodal do gênero de tiras em relação à complementaridade da produção de sentidos decorrentes da interação palavra-imagem.

Effect evaluation of L-cystine and bile salts in H2S method for fecal contamination detection in water environment.

Silva, Thiago Nepomuceno 13 June 2016 (has links)
Water supply for human consumption have been compromised. Several detection methods for fecal contamination have been developed to solve this problem. Manja and co-workers (1982) developed a simple, fast and low-cost method for fecal contamination based on detection of sulfate-reducing bacteria, the H2S method. This work aimed to analyse the detection efficiency of the H2S method under different conditions: with L-cystine (125mg/L e 250mg/L) and sodium deoxycholate (0.1% e 0.3%). Also, non-sulfate-reducing bacteria interference were evaluated. Comparison tests were made through membrane filtration and Colilert®. Our results indicate a faster and more sensible for the 0.3% sodium deoxycholate condition. Compared to other classic methodologies, the 0.3% sodium deoxycholate condition slightly decrease the sensibility. However the H2S method was more sensitive than the Colilert one.

Strip Development and Community: Maintaining a Sense of Place

Carr, Andrew Kelly 01 August 2011 (has links)
Abstract Strip development eases communities’ economic troubles by providing jobs and cheap goods at the expense of a sense of place and social fabric. Four factors are critical to the dissolution of place in strip development: mobility, standardization, specialization, and technology. (Randolph Hester) Mobility gives people the freedom to move over distances with little constraint; a consequence of this is a produced sense of rootlessness within many communities. Standardization creates placelessness in communities by the repetition of form and function. Specialization diminishes comprehensive knowledge of place and complex social and ecological thinking. Technology may divorce people from their natural environments. I want to test these four place indicated principles within LaFollette, Tn. Through methods of mapping, observation, structured interviews, and photographic and archival research I will show how strip development has negatively altered the social and economic development of the city of LaFollette. I will identify elements that currently and historically give the city of LaFollette a sense of place, and encourage social interaction and investment. Strip development can drastically alter the dynamics of communities, both physically and socially. How can communities grow and develop while maintaining this connection to “place”, and how can the social dynamic of a community be encouraged in light of a changing, and growing community?
