Seeking to gain a better idea of this process, some theoretical approaches currently more debated in the national and international level were discussed: the constructivism, the ideas of Vygotsky and those of Uta Frith. Especially, the role of the teacher in teaching how to read and write was analyzed. The study adopted a qualitative research approach, in which teachers participating in the National Pact for Literacy in the Appropriate Age(PNAIC) answered a questionnaire dealing with the way they conducted the literacy process and, particularly, if they considered (or not) the diversity of knowledge, experience and learning rhythms present in their classroom. Teachers reported how they approached this situation, making considerations on the PNAIC and its impact on the teaching practice. In analyzing the data, some findings were clear: if literacy in our country has indeed shown progresses, it is essential to invest in ongoing training of teachers, trying to guide their work, to inform them about the theoretical bases embraced by the networks of public education and, also, to promote are examining of their pedagogical practice. Without implementing this action, hardly teaching professionals will gain the needed support to make good use of their students‟ diversity of knowledge and experience, facilitating their construction of the reading and the writing / O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar como professores ligados à rede municipal de Curitiba (PR) abordavam a diversidade de conhecimentos, experiências e ritmos de aprendizagem de seus alunos durante o processo de alfabetização, notadamente em seus estágios iniciais.
