An experimental investigation of the relationships between perceptual modality preferences of middle school students and their academic achievement

Individual differences in perceptual and cognitive abilities affect school achievement. More specifically, students who cannot selectively attend to modality information processing will not become high achievers. Efforts to improve academic achievement have failed partly because all students have been expected to use the same approach for learning, and little has been done to match learning programs to the perceptual modality preferences of individuals. The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether the visual, auditory, tactual and kinesthetic scores (based on the LSI) of students in grades six, seven, and eight from four middle schools were significantly related to academic achievement in Mathematical Concepts and Reading Comprehension, based on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) scores. The secondary purpose was to determine whether there were relationships among grade, gender, schools and perceptual modality preferences. Students in grades six, seven and eight in four middle schools were selected by section class at all three grade levels. Although the sampling method is by group instead of by individual, there was no reason to believe that such an approach to population sampling would significantly affect the results of this study, as all the class groups were already fully heterogenized. The Learning Style Inventory (LSI) (Dunn, Dunn & Price, 1987) was administered to them to identify their visual, auditory, tactual and kinesthetic modality preferences. These data were analyzed for their relationship to modality matched achievement scores for each student. Multivariate Analysis of Variance was utilized to determine the relationships between perceptual modality strengths by gender, grade, school, and academic achievement. In general, achievement and learning modality were not related. Although this finding differs from earlier research findings using the LSI model, it does not necessarily contradict them, basically because this study was more correlational than experimental, whereas the previous studies in this area were fully experimental and almost always achieved significance with the administration of intervening treatments. Visualization was moderately related to reading comprehension and reference source utilization. There were no relationships among gender. / Ed. D.

No / Purpose ¿ To examine the psychometric properties and construct validity of the general decision making style (GDMS) questionnaire in two UK samples. Design/methodology/approach ¿ The GDMS takes the form of a self-report questionnaire which identifies five decision making styles: rational, intuitive, dependent, avoidant, and spontaneous. It was administered to samples of business studies undergraduates in two UK business schools. Analyses included scale reliabilities, test-re-test reliability, and both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Findings ¿ The instrument's internal and temporal consistencies were generally sound. Consistent with earlier studies, analyses undertaken on the two samples independently were generally supportive of a five factor model of decision making style. No relationships with gender or year of study were observed.

Examining Adolescent Drinking and Adolescents' Perceptions of Parental Monitoring, Communication, and Parenting Style in a Rural Setting

Research has found that adolescent substance use is highly prevalent in both urban and rural populations and that parenting processes can affect adolescent substance use. The majority of the research pertains to adolescents in urban populations, however. This study explores how adolescents' perceptions of parental monitoring, parent-adolescent communication, and parenting style are related to adolescent frequency of alcohol consumption and binge-drinking in a rural population in Virginia. A sample (n = 3,472) of 7th-12th grade males and females from six counties were examined via secondary data analysis. Bivariate correlations revealed significant correlations between parental monitoring and communication with both types of drinking in that those reporting higher levels of perceived monitoring and communication reported lower levels of alcohol consumption and binge-drinking. Authoritative parenting was only significantly correlated with frequency of alcohol consumption. Linear regression analyses revealed that parental monitoring accounted for most of the variance with both drinking variables. Effects of gender and grade are discussed. / Master of Science

Identity status and identity style in the emo subculture: Exploring identity between emo vs. non-emo emerging adults

Emerging adulthood can be viewed as a time of exploration and experimentation for college-aged adults (Arnett, 2000). As individuals begin trying on their possible selves as they explore personal identity, they can gravitate to peer groups that fit their interests. For some, that can mean being drawn to the emo subculture. This subculture focuses on its fashion, often based on dyed black hair, dark clothing, studded accessories, and black eyeliner (Chernoff & Widdicombe, 2015), centered around music with lyrics often interpreted as depressive or angst?ridden. Emo subculture has been subject to criticism and stereotypes, especially those with mental health themes (Arunrangsiwed & Arunrangsiwed, 2019). This research explored possible differences in identity status (Marcia) and identity style (Berzonzsky) among those who identify as emo compared to emerging adults who did not identify with this subculture. The purpose of this study was to examine identity formation in individuals who identify with the emo subculture compared to individuals who do not identify with this subculture. The sample for the survey comprised emerging adults 18-26 recruited through social media sites offering a link or QR code to an online survey consisting of measures of identity status, identity style, and psychological well-being-related questions. There were 648 participants in total, out of which 87.00% identified themselves as emo. The research provides useful insights into identity development within the emo subculture. It explores the connections between exploration, commitment, different identity styles, and mental health themes. According to the study, there are notable differences in the identity processes, statuses, and styles between emerging adults who identify with the emo subculture and those who do not. The research shows significant differences in identity status and identity processes between individuals who identify with the emo subculture and those who do not.
