Urban Cycling and Automated Vehicles

Bruss, Lennart, Müller, Anja 03 January 2023 (has links)
Connected and automated vebicles (CA Vs) will shape traffic patterns in the future and greatly influence urban mobility. A particular challenge for CAVs is to anticipate the movements of other road users. This applies especially to micromobility vehicles (bicycles, smaU electric vehicles), whose traffic behaviour is difficult to predict and shaped from individual behaviour. The increasing coexistence of CAVs and other, conventionally driven modes of transport thus has a growing impact as well as multiple consequences for urban structures and public space. The following fundamental trends will shape the way people live together in cities in the coming years: 1. increasing share of CAVs and micromobility, 2. renaissance ofthe mixed and liveable city, 3. changes in mobility behaviour and the appreciation of public space ( especially due to climate change and the Covid 19-pandemic), as weil as 4. technical upgrading of infrastructure. These parallel developments will lead to both conflicts and opportunities for cities.[from Introduction]

The role of cognitive effort in emotion regulation and emotion regulation choice

Scheffel, Christoph 07 February 2024 (has links)
In our daily lives, we encounter a multitude of emotional challenges in various contexts, necessitating the use of diverse emotion regulation strategies for adaptive responses (Aldao et al., 2015; Bonanno and Burton, 2013). These strategies require cognitive control, making them cognitively demanding processes (Gross, 2015b; Ochsner et al., 2012). Yet, it remains unknown whether different strategies impose different levels of cognitive effort. This thesis aims to address this gap in the literature by conducting a comparative analysis of the cognitive effort required for specific emotion regulation strategies. Our research takes a comprehensive approach to evaluating effort, utilizing physiological and subjective measures. In the field of emotion regulation choice, the role of effort remains less explored. We seek to deepen the understanding by not only investigating the self-reported reasons behind participants’ choice behaviour, but also by employing rigorous statistical analyses to identify the factors that influence these choices. Prior studies on the determinants of emotion regulation choice have faced certain limitations. While some determinants favouring specific strategies have been identified, there is a lack of information regarding the strategies that are not chosen. Additionally, it is unclear to what extent individuals prefer their chosen strategy over other available options. These issues can be addressed by assigning subjective values to all choice options, as these values are central to the decisionmaking process. This thesis has developed and validated a novel paradigm that measures the individual subjective values associated with emotion regulation strategies. We not only examined whether these values can effectively predict actual choice behaviour, but also delved into the variables that predict these subjective values, offering a holistic perspective on the complex interplay between cognitive effort and emotion regulation choice. To enhance comprehension on the impact of cognitive effort on emotion regulation, Study 1 and Study 2 aimed to compare the necessary effort between the two emotion regulation strategies distancing and expressive suppression. To our knowledge, this was the first work striving to comprehensively examine effort during emotion regulation by assessing it through various means. Two studies were carried out to examine the impact of cognitive effort on emotion regulation choice. Specifically, it was explored whether decision-making behaviour is more influenced by the cognitive effort required to implement the strategy or the effectiveness of the strategy. To answer these research questions, cognitive effort and effectiveness of distancing and suppression were quantified through subjective (ratings) and physiological (pupillometry, heart rate) measures. To explore choice behaviour, participants were instructed to finally employ either of the strategies again. Our findings highlight that the strategies did not differ substantially in terms of physiological effort, yet they did exhibit substantial disparities in the subjectively perceived effort. These differences between strategies also manifested in their choice behaviour: Two thirds of the participants opted for suppression once again, despite its lower effectiveness. Participants cited lower effort as the reason for their choice. By measuring effort through various means, these two studies provide a comprehensive understanding of the cognitive effort involved in emotion regulation. Furthermore, the results on the determinants of emotion regulation choice not only enrich research, but also provide starting points for practical applications. Paradigms commonly employed in emotion regulation choice research - as in Study 1 and Study 2 - suffer from a drawback as they entail a loss of information, providing only binary data concerning whether or not a strategy was chosen. However, it is unclear to what extent the favoured strategy was preferred compared to the alternative options. In Study 3, a registered report, the objective was to develop a novel paradigm to determine the subjective values attributed to each emotion regulation strategy at hand. The cognitive effort discounting paradigm by Westbrook et al. (2013) provided the foundation, but was developed and extended further. Participants completed an emotion regulation paradigm whereby they were prompted to employ three strategies - distraction, distancing, and expressive suppression. Next, we conducted our novel discounting paradigm to determine the subjective value of each strategy. In our study, we were not only able to show that subjective values predict subsequent choice behaviour, but that, in addition to self-assessed utility, subjective effort in particular was predictive of subjective values. Our innovative paradigm has extensive potential applications, even beyond the field of emotion regulation. By utilising this paradigm, it becomes feasible to ascertain subjective values of demand levels that lack any objective effort hierarchy. In summary, the present thesis makes an important contribution to deepen the understanding of the role of cognitive effort in emotion regulation and emotion regulation choice. Cognitive effort and regulatory success were comprehensively examined by assessing trait measures (questionnaires), subjective ratings and peripheral physiological measures (pupillometry, electromyography, electrocardiogram). Our main finding, which could be replicated across three pre-registered studies, shows that the use of strategies is associated with different levels of subjective effort for individuals. This leads to the majority of individuals choosing the strategy that is associated with less effort for them, rather than the strategy that is more effective. Finally, the thesis outlines a novel paradigm that enables the calculation of individual subjective values attributed to emotion regulation strategies. This facilitates a more comprehensive evaluation of the determinants of emotion regulation choice, as well as the strength of their preference for such strategies. Thus, it adds to the expanding literature on the field of emotion regulation flexibility by presenting starting points for assessing individuals’ flexibility and adaptability.:Contents Summary Preface 1. Teilhabe am Arbeitsleben aus Subjektperspektive

Teismann, Malte 05 August 2022 (has links)
The dissertation analyses in an explorative study the constitution of ‚Teilhabe‘ (participation) from a subject perspective in the context of sheltered workshops. The ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-CRPD) and the introduction of the new Federal Participation Act (Bundesteilhabegesetz) have brought the individual and his or her equal participation to the fore. For many people with disabilities, participation takes place in institutions like sheltered workshops. Sheltered workshops in Germany provided work for approximately 315,000 employees in 2020. This is problematic because even after the ratification of the UN-CRPD, the figures indicate that more and more people are securing their participation outside the general labour market. In a qualitative research project, seven employees of a WfbM were accompanied in occupational change processes. In a qualitative longitudinal study, the subjective level of participation was researched in the sense of grounded theory in order to find out which capabilities become visible in the context of sheltered workshops and how participation is constituted from the subject perspective. The results of the study make it clear that participation in sheltered workshops is made possible on several different hierarchical levels. What individuals perceive as desirable participation opportunities depends on their evaluation framework. It becomes clear that participation can also occur in separative settings such as sheltered workshops, as long as this is coherently compatible with one's own participation goals. Participation from the subject's perspective is then an individually reflected state that is realised through a feeling of fit between the individual participation goal, the underlying ideas and the real conditions of the perceived possibilities.

Maybe Eventually? Towards Combining Temporal and Probabilistic Description Logics and Queries: Extended Version

Koopmann, Patrick 20 June 2022 (has links)
We present some initial results on ontology-based query answering with description logic ontologies that may employ temporal and probabilistic operators on concepts and axioms. Speci_cally, we consider description logics extended with operators from linear temporal logic (LTL), as well as subjective probability operators, and an extended query language in which conjunctive queries can be combined using these operators. We first show some complexity results for the setting in which either only temporal operators or only probabilistic operators may be used, both in the ontology and in the query, and then show a 2ExpSpace lower bound for the setting in which both types of operators can be used together. / This is an extended version of an article accepted at Description Logics 2019.

Subjective Birth Experience Predicts Mother–Infant Bonding Difficulties in Women With Mental Disorders

Junge-Hoffmeister, Juliane, Bittner, Antje, Garthus-Niegel, Susan, Goeckenjan, Maren, Martini, Julia, Weidner, Kerstin 06 June 2024 (has links)
Background: The subjective experience of giving birth to a child varies considerably depending on psychological, medical, situational, relational, and other individual characteristics. In turn, it may have an impact on postpartum maternal mental health and family relationships, such as mother–infant bonding. The objective of the study was to evaluate the relevance of the subjective birth experience (SBE) for mother–infant bonding difficulties (BD) in women with mental disorders. - Methods: This study used data from N = 141 mothers who were treated for postpartum mental disorders in the mother–baby day unit of the Psychosomatic University Clinic in Dresden, Germany. Patients' mental status at admission and discharge was routinely examined using a diagnostic interview (SCID I) and standard psychometric questionnaires (e.g., EPDS, BSI, PBQ). Both, the SBE (assessed by Salmon's Item List, SIL) as well as medical complications (MC) were assessed retrospectively by self-report. The predictive value of SBE, MC, as well as psychopathological symptoms for mother–infant BD were evaluated using logistic regression analyses. - Results: About half of this clinical sample (47.2%) reported a negative SBE; 56.8% of all mothers presented with severe mother–infant BD toward the baby. Mothers with BD showed not only significantly more depressiveness (EPDS: M = 16.6 ± 5.6 vs. 14.4 ± 6.2*), anxiety (STAI: M = 57.2 ± 10.6 vs. 51.4 ± 10.6***), and general psychopathology (BSI-GSI: M = 1.4 ± 0.7 vs. 1.1 ± 0.6**) compared to women without BD, but also a significantly more negative SBE (SIL: M = 79.3 ± 16.2 vs. 61.3 ± 22.9***). Moreover, the SBE was the most powerful predictor for BD in univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses [OR = 0.96*** (95% CI 0.94–0.98) vs. OR = 0.96** (95% CI 0.93–0.98)], even when univariate significant predictors (e.g., current psychopathology and MC during birth) were controlled. - Conclusions: A negative SBE is strongly associated with mother–infant bonding in patients with postpartum mental disorders. It needs to get targeted within postpartum treatment, preferably in settings including both mother and child, to improve distorted mother–infant bonding processes and prevent long-term risks for the newborn. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of focusing on the specific needs of vulnerable women prior to and during birth (e.g., emotional safety, good communication, and support) as well as individual factors that might be predictive for a negative SBE.

Psychometric properties and validation of the English version Giessen Subjective Complaints List (GBB-8)

Petrowski, Katja, Zenger, Markus, Schmalbach, Bjarne, Bastianon, Christina Diane, Strauss, Bernhard 04 June 2024 (has links)
Background The present study investigated the psychometric properties of the newly developed English version of the Giessen Subjective Complaint List-8 (GBB-8), a questionnaire assessing psychosomatic symptoms with regard to exhaustion, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular. Methods A U.S. sample of 638 participants (47.6% female) was recruited by MTurk to participate in this cross-sectional online survey. Validation instruments included the Patient Health Questionnaire-4, Perceived Stress Scale, short version of the Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress. Results Reliability was high with ω’s between .80 and .86 for all subscales. Confirmatory factor analyses yielded comparable good model fit for a four-dimensional model as well as a higher order model. Multi-group confirmatory factor analyses confirmed measurement invariance of the GBB-8 across sex and age. Regarding convergent validity, correlations with other instruments were highly significant and of large magnitude as expected. Conclusion The English version of the GBB-8 has shown excellent psychometric properties. Therefore, it can be recommended for the assessment of psychosomatic complaints in contexts where short screening instruments are necessary.

Zur Rekonstruktion des Freundschaftsverständnisses von Kindern als Subjektive Theorie

Schwer, Christina 06 August 2002 (has links) (PDF)

Reuter, Dinah 08 August 2011 (has links)
This thesis aims at describing German third grade pupils'' concepts concerning the physical quantity weight. It is a hypothesis-generating thesis based on a qualitative study. We are going to clarify those concepts that can be observed, what kind of influence school instruction can have on these concepts and the implications for an instruction that wants to tie in with children''s previous experiences. Based on the theory of conceptual change and the theory of subjective domains of experiences as well as the mathematical and physical background of the quantity weight but also the results of previous studies, we will develop a model of a weight concept by organizing related aspects into subconcepts. We have designed an empirical study with the purpose of examining third graders'' weight concepts in the context of a teaching unit on weights. For the study, 15 children were interviewed. The interviews of two children are evaluated in form of two single case studies. The analysed concepts of these two children are completed with selected concepts of other children to find similarities and differences, allowing us to draw conclusions on both general concept evolution and instructional issues. The interview analyses show varied differentiated weight concepts. Some of the children showed already at the beginning highly developed subconcepts based on all-round individual experience. In the later interviews hardly any change of these children''s concepts were assessed. Other children with initially less sophisticated subconcepts evolved over time the concepts units, base knowledge, scales, and weighing. Immediately after the teaching unit we were able to find both new and evolved concepts. Later, some children''s concepts had stabilised while other children had returned to pre-instructional concepts. Based on the overall results of the study, we revisit our weight concept model.
