Feedback control of complex oscillatory systems

Tukhlina, Natalia January 2008 (has links)
In the present dissertation paper an approach which ensures an efficient control of such diverse systems as noisy or chaotic oscillators and neural ensembles is developed. This approach is implemented by a simple linear feedback loop. The dissertation paper consists of two main parts. One part of the work is dedicated to the application of the suggested technique to a population of neurons with a goal to suppress their synchronous collective dynamics. The other part is aimed at investigating linear feedback control of coherence of a noisy or chaotic self-sustained oscillator. First we start with a problem of suppressing synchronization in a large population of interacting neurons. The importance of this task is based on the hypothesis that emergence of pathological brain activity in the case of Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders is caused by synchrony of many thousands of neurons. The established therapy for the patients with such disorders is a permanent high-frequency electrical stimulation via the depth microelectrodes, called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). In spite of efficiency of such stimulation, it has several side effects and mechanisms underlying DBS remain unclear. In the present work an efficient and simple control technique is suggested. It is designed to ensure suppression of synchrony in a neural ensemble by a minimized stimulation that vanishes as soon as the tremor is suppressed. This vanishing-stimulation technique would be a useful tool of experimental neuroscience; on the other hand, control of collective dynamics in a large population of units represents an interesting physical problem. The main idea of suggested approach is related to the classical problem of oscillation theory, namely the interaction between a self-sustained (active) oscillator and a passive load (resonator). It is known that under certain conditions the passive oscillator can suppress the oscillations of an active one. In this thesis a much more complicated case of active medium, which itself consists of thousands of oscillators is considered. Coupling this medium to a specially designed passive oscillator, one can control the collective motion of the ensemble, specifically can enhance or suppress it. Having in mind a possible application in neuroscience, the problem of suppression is concentrated upon. Second, the efficiency of suggested suppression scheme is illustrated by considering more complex case, i.e. when the population of neurons generating the undesired rhythm consists of two non-overlapping subpopulations: the first one is affected by the stimulation, while the collective activity is registered from the second one. Generally speaking, the second population can be by itself both active and passive; both cases are considered here. The possible applications of suggested technique are discussed. Third, the influence of the external linear feedback on coherence of a noisy or chaotic self-sustained oscillator is considered. Coherence is one of the main properties of self-oscillating systems and plays a key role in the construction of clocks, electronic generators, lasers, etc. The coherence of a noisy limit cycle oscillator in the context of phase dynamics is evaluated by the phase diffusion constant, which is in its turn proportional to the width of the spectral peak of oscillations. Many chaotic oscillators can be described within the framework of phase dynamics, and, therefore, their coherence can be also quantified by the way of the phase diffusion constant. The analytical theory for a general linear feedback, considering noisy systems in the linear and Gaussian approximation is developed and validated by numerical results.

Stimulus Coding and Synchrony in Stochastic Neuron Models

Cieniak, Jakub 19 May 2011 (has links)
A stochastic leaky integrate-and-fire neuron model was implemented in this study to simulate the spiking activity of the electrosensory "P-unit" receptor neurons of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. In the context of sensory coding, these cells have been previously shown to respond in experiment to natural random narrowband signals with either a linear or nonlinear coding scheme, depending on the intrinsic firing rate of the cell in the absence of external stimulation. It was hypothesised in this study that this duality is due to the relation of the stimulus to the neuron's excitation threshold. This hypothesis was validated with the model by lowering the threshold of the neuron or increasing its intrinsic noise, or randomness, either of which made the relation between firing rate and input strength more linear. Furthermore, synchronous P-unit firing to a common input also plays a role in decoding the stimulus at deeper levels of the neural pathways. Synchronisation and desynchronisation between multiple model responses for different types of natural communication signals were shown to agree with experimental observations. A novel result of resonance-induced synchrony enhancement of P-units to certain communication frequencies was also found.

Sensory Ecology Of Acoustic Communication In The Tropical Bushcricket Genus Mecopoda : Mechanisms And Evolution Of Synchrony

Nityananda, Vivek 11 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, I characterise five species of the bushcricket genus Mecopoda with respect to their acoustic signals and morphology and investigate the phenomenon of acoustic synchrony in one of these five species: Mecopoda ‘Chirper’. In several bushcricket species, individual males synchronise their chirps during acoustic interactions. Synchrony is imperfect and the chirps of the males lead or follow each other by a short duration of time. Imperfect synchrony is believed to have evolved in response to female preferences for leading chirps. This model of the evolution of acoustic synchrony, however, depends on assumptions about the physiological mechanism of acoustic interaction between individual males and also on the presence of selective attention to a restricted number of neighbours. Neither of these two assumptions has previously been investigated in the species Mecopoda ‘Chirper’ and the implications of these for the evolution of acoustic synchrony is unknown. Furthermore, the advantage of leading chirps for males in the field, given trade-offs between the advantages of lead and intensity and the spacing of males has not been investigated in any bushcricket. In this thesis, I address these questions using a combination of behaviour, neurophysiology and computer simulations. Five distinct song types of the genus Mecopoda were found in Southern India. Four were morphologically indistinguishable. Some of them were both sympatric and had synchronous breeding seasons. The songs of these five song types ranged from simple short chirps to highly complex songs with multiple components. The temporal patterns of the songs were very distinctive, whereas their spectral features were similar. Component elements of the different songs were distinct despite overall similarity. The song types possibly represent sibling species. The mechanism underlying synchrony in the species Mecopoda ‘Chirper’ differs from previously reported mechanisms in that it involves both a change in the oscillator’s intrinsic rate and resetting on a chirp-by-chirp basis. The form of the phase response curve differs from those of previously reported firefly and bushcricket species including the closely related Malaysian species Mecopoda elongaa. Simulations exploring oscillator properties showed that the outcome of pairwise interactions was independent of initial phase and alternation was not possible. Solo intrinsic chirp period was a relatively good predictor of leading probability. Changing the intrinsic period during interactions could, however, enable males with longer periods to lead during acoustic interactions. In choruses in the field, chirp period and hence lead probability of males had low repeatability with no consistent ‘leaders’ and ‘followers’ across nights. During acoustic interactions, sixty percent of followers called oftener when leaders were not calling. Spacing enabled some softer males to gain areas where they were the loudest of all males in a chorus. Thus followers in choruses potentially have different strategies at their disposal by which they could offset their disadvantage in attracting mates. In neurophysiological experiments investigating selective attention, louder, leading chirps were preferentially represented in the auditory system but the representation of softer following chirps was not completely abolished. Following chirps that were 20 decibels louder than leading chirps were better represented than leading chirps. During acoustic interactions in response to playback, males synchronised with leading chirps even when the following chirps were 20 dB louder. Males did not restrict their attention to louder chirps during interactions but were affected by all chirps above a particular threshold intensity . In the field, males on average had only one or two neighbours whose calls were above this threshold. Selective attention in this species is thus achieved through spacing rather than neurophysiological filtering of softer signals. A simulation that combined these results to investigate the evolution of synchrony, revealed that the strategy of responding to one’s neighbours and synchronising with them was able to invade a population of males that did not respond to their neighbours only upto a point. The responder strategy was also not evolutionarily stable and could be invaded by the non-responder strategy. In both cases, the population stabilised at a point where the number of males with either strategy were approximately equal. This was true even if a different physiological resetting mechanism was assumed. The results also held true across a range of male aggregation patterns and different possible female preference values for time-intensity trade-off and lead windows. Thus it appears that though a responder strategy can spread in a population up to a proportion of approximately 0.5, it cannot completely take over a population, if the only selective advantage to synchronising males is due to female preference for leading chirps.

A Complexity Analysis of Noise-like Activity in the Nervous System and its Application to Brain State Classification and Identification in Epilepsy

Serletis, Demitre 18 January 2012 (has links)
Complexity lies halfway between stochasticity and determinism, suggesting that brain activity is neither fully random nor fully predictable but lives by the rules of nonlinear high- and low-complexity dynamics. One important aspect of brain function is noise-like activity (NLA), defined as background, electrical potential fluctuations in the nervous system distinct from spiking rhythms in the foreground. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the neurodynamical complexity of NLA recorded at the cellular and local network scales in in vitro preparations of mouse and human hippocampal tissue, under healthy and epileptiform conditions. In particular, it was found that neuronal NLA arises out of the physiological contributions of gap junctions and chemical synaptic channels and is characterized by a spectrum of complexity, ranging from high- to low-complexity, that was measured using methods from nonlinear dynamical systems theory. Importantly, the complexity of background, neuronal NLA was shown to depend on the degree of cellular interconnectivity to the surrounding local network. In addition, the complexity and multifractality of NLA was further studied at the cellular and local network scales in epileptiform transitions to seizure-like events, identifying emergent low-complexity and reduced multifractality (bordering on monofractal-type dynamics) in the pathological ictal state. Finally, dual intracellular recordings of hippocampal epileptiform activity were analyzed to measure NLA synchronicity, showing evidence for increased same- and cross-frequency correlations and increased phase synchronization in the pathological ictal state. Convergence towards increased phase synchrony manifested in lower frequency regions including theta (4-10 Hz) and beta (12-30 Hz), but also in higher frequency bands (gamma, 30-80 Hz). In summary, there is evidence to suggest that background NLA captures important neurodynamical information pertinent to the classification and identification of brain state transitions in healthy and epileptiform hippocampal dynamics, using sophisticated neuroengineering analyses of these physiological signals.

Fernandes, Frederico Augusto Garcia. January 2003 (has links)
Abstract: This thesis contains an oral poetry study at the moment of its updating (sometimes subtractions are possible), that is to say, during the performance. For clarification's sake, it is divided in three main parts. In the first part, I identified the discoursive clashes between the narrator and the foreign traveler, based on travelers' reports. After that, it was demonstrated that the audience presence requires from the narrator, during the performance, an attitude about what he tells, i.e., an identity creation manifested by the narrative discourse. Another item is about the oral poetry recorded by the traveler. At this point, I emphasized that some performance features were ignored and that the transcription interferes in oral text comprehension. In the second part, the oral narrative discursive aspects were analyzed. I verified that the narrator creates an "authority" (the relationship face the audience) and an "authorship" (the listened text update) by which he engenders an identity discourse. The matter of variables and invariables was studied in the third part. Thus, I detained myself in the study of burial "pantaneira" narrative. I identified invariable elements (origin, annunciation, marking, probation, epilogue) that have some variables (kinds of origin, different forms of annunciation, etc.). Besides, the narratives reorganize themselves by changing their meanings such as the prototale, the explicative, the bluff and the descriptive, according to my verification. In the last chapter, I discussed the performance. I also analyzed the narrative manifestation in the performance and some of the narrator's mechanisms used to persuade his audience. Divided this way, the studies intend to make a synchronic approach of oral poetry, because they depart from oral text in its composition space taking into consideration the narrator's voice (identity and noise) / Doutor

De la nature de la variation diatopique en kabyle : étude de la formation des singulier et pluriel nominaux / About the nature of the variation in Kabyle diatopic : study of the formation of singular and plural nouns

Ben Si Said, Samir 06 October 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with noun formation and morpho-Phonological variation in Kabyle dialects. The analysis of the data in my own dialecte AEH from Dallet (1982) dictionary showed that1) items that appear in the plural but are absent in the singular are unpredictable and they are part of the lexical root ingredients.2) from the dialect of AEH, I've proposed the generalization that the plural has a constant size 5 CV units. It turned out later that this is true in fact for all Kabyle dialects. This generalization is based on field research that I conducted in the Kabylie region.I also proposed an analysis of the initial vowel in Kabyle (and Berber) which takes into account the diachronic scenario of Vycichl (1957) et Brugnatelli (1997) that in Proto-Berber there has been a congealing former demonstrative with names. I suggested that alternating a-(EL) vs w/u (EA) is allomorphic. By the same movement, I refined analysis Bendjaballah (2011) by removing the CV that spells out K (the case). In my analysis, VII arrives with his own CV. The general framework of my analysis is defined by the Berber typological situation: it is a concatenative language, since we cannot attach any semantic or morpho-Syntactic information to vowels or template; demonstration of constant size plural also establishes that Berber is templatic, i.e. and that consonants and vowels are stored together in the root (vocalized) and the template are stored independently in the lexicon. If so Semitic lexical ingredients of a word are three in number (consonant root vowel template), in Kabyle there are only two (root (vocalized) and template). In this templatic but perfectly concatenative environment, the thesis develops a theory of diatopic variation whose locus are two in number: combination of a given root to different templates in different dialects in one hand, and in the other hand, roots melodically identical but whose segments can carry of across the dialects different lexical instructions about their behavior at time of association. Given the fact that work on diatopic variation in Afro-Asiatic are sparse, it will be interesting to see if the variation in other languages works in the same way.How diatopic variation is handled in this thesis relates to the Borer-Chomsky Conjecture that, according Oostendorp (2013), I apply to phonology. In the case of Kabyle, diatopic variation of singulars does not imply different mechanisms of plural formation (computation), but lexical markings to their unique roots in a particular class. Finally, I hope that the thesis will find its place in the debate on the status of the root and template in the mental lexicon of Afro-Asiatic languages: the classical approach gives an independent lexical, grammatical and cognitive status to the root and template, while the stem-Based morphology supports both units coexist in the lexicon. If diatopic variation in Kabyle works as described, i.e. by the association of a given root to a distinct singular templates across dialects, the root and template necessarily represent two independent tokens.
