Television Representing Television: How NBC's 30 Rock Parodies and Satirizes the Cultural Industries / How NBC's 30 Rock Parodies and Satirizes the Cultural Industries

Bratslavsky, Lauren 06 1900 (has links)
ix, 94 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This project analyzes the cun-ent NBC television situation comedy 30 Rock for its potential as a popular form of critical cultural criticism of the NBC network and, in general, the cultural industries. The series is about the behind the scenes work of a fictionalized comedy show, which like 30 Rock is also appearing on NBC. The show draws on parody and satire to engage in an ongoing effort to generate humor as well as commentary on the sitcom genre and industry practices such as corporate control over creative content and product placement. Using a textual analysis, the show is examined to explore issues related to the television industry, the production of culture, and the culture of production. Of concern is the contradictory relationship between the critical potential of 30 Rock's self-reflexive content and the commercial, commodity structure of the television industry within which the series is located. / Committee in Charge: Carl Bybee, Chair; Patricia A. Lost in masculinity : a critical rhetorical analysis of the TV series Lost

Hester, Scarlett Leigh 20 July 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the hit television series Lost and how the characters Kate Austen and James ‘Sawyer’ Ford negotiate their gender performance on and off the island. From a critical rhetorical standpoint, this study further examines the stereotypical depictions of masculinity that are perpetuated though the media and how these depictions are either negated or adhered to by the previously mentioned characters. Overall, the major themes of masculinity that were found were the correlation between muscularity and masculinity as well as the display of aggressive and violet behavior to exert dominance. Ultimately, I argue that the gender performances of both Kate and Sawyer only serve to reinforce the heteronormative societal ideal that we are more uncomfortable with women who deviate away from expected gender performances than we are with male deviation. / Literature review -- Theoretical orientation -- Kate Austen analysis -- James 'Sawyer' Ford analysis -- Discussion. / Department of Communication Studies

A Historical/Critical Analysis of the TV Series The Fugitive

Pierson, David P. (David Paul) 05 1900 (has links)
In many respects, the popular 1960's television series, The Fugitive perfectly captured the swelling disillusionment with authority, alienation, and discontent that soon encompassed American society. This historical/critical study provides a broad overview of the economic, social, and political climate that surrounded the creation of The Fugitive. The primary focus of this study is the analysis of five discursive topics (individualism, marriage, justice & authority, professionalism, science and technology) within selected episodes and to show how they relate to broader cultural debates which occurred at that time. Finally, this study argues that The Fugitive is a part of a television adventure subgenre which we may classify as the contemporary "wanderer-hero" narrative and traces its evolution through selected television series from the last three decades.

The Impact of 21st Century Television Representation on Women of Color: Colorism Myth or Reality

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis examined how colorism impacts the representation of young women of color in 21st century television shows. The thesis focused on how colorism affects one’s idea of beauty and self-esteem, and how young women are portrayed. A content analysis of five television programs (Black-ish, Dear White People, Empire, Grown-ish, and The Carmichael Show) were analyzed. Through the analysis, darker complexion women were analyzed and it was found negative attributes were used to describe them in terms of beauty, and for lighter skinned females positives attributes were used throughout the show. In the five episodes examined that aired in the 21st century, beauty was defined based on one’s complexion as it was before in previous centuries. Issues of colorism are still displayed in 21st century television shows and through positive and negative caricatures. Colorism has a direct impact on how women of color are perceived and it can directly impact their self-esteem. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
