ARTISTA NA RUA E ARTISTA DE RUA: Enfrentamento e resistência / STREET ARTIST AND ARTIST IN THE STREET: Coping and Resistance

Gularte, Jorge Alberto Fontoura 25 March 2015 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul / The presented dissertation reflects upon artistc proposals wich confronted the artist with his practice, making him think about it over two different perspectives: the practice of the "street artist" and the "artist IN the street". It's about thinking the artistic practice related to the work "Portraits $1" (Retratos $1), made in the public context of the city streets, making portrait-drawings with a sfereographic pen on paper and duplicated-portrait with carbon paper on paper. The street is where the portrait-drawing takes place and is exchanged for R$1,00 (UM Real) while the duplicated-portrait created with the carbon paper is archived by the artist. This artistic project brings up "Key" questions to think about art today: where is the artists place, the production of art and the public? The research focuses on the artistic production wich takes place with the contact of the public, when acting like a street artist, the work blurs the value codes and legitimation towards what is produced, to both art context and street context.

L'idiot de la famille et ses leçons : Sartre, un penseur pour aujourd'hui / The fool of the family and your lessons : Sartre, a philosophe for today

Martins Fayad, Marilda 31 May 2016 (has links)
The Fool of the family is complement to the book of philosophy Questions of Method. Sartre asks in Questions of Method a change of language. It will be in this thesis to decipher Sartre writing in its nuances, details and colors. In other words, it is designed to study books from Sartre in order to find a meaning that makes sense for us, where his words are full of statements and their contrary at the same time. Our task of re-reading in The Fool of the family is to clarify the central axis of the existential psychoanalysis and point the most hidden of the philosophy of life. Insofar as Sartre will show that we must decide on the kind of life we want to have, this study aims to illuminate why Sartre is an indispensable thinker for the man of today. Thus, it will be necessary to treatThe Fool of the family as a work for learning. In this sense, the meaning and significance of our research are not closed and still opened to new readings. Our main objective is to clarify what has been the main theme of Sartreto write The Fool of the family and to check if the essence of the writer can be defined by his writings. In other words, do the writings show us who is the author as a man, or else can we rather see his double, one who speaks at his place and then become written word?

Grafikers roll i spelutvecklingsprojekt / Games artists’ role in game development

Sommar, Joakim January 2017 (has links)
The present study aims to provide a comprehensive view of games artists’ role in game development, in the Swedish games industry. All roles focusing on the visual elements of game development are referred to as games artists. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with game developers from both small and world-leading gaming companies. They told about their role as games artist, game designer or programmer in the gaming industry. The game developers’ inputs were used to respond to the issues raised in the study. It's through games like Battlefield, Candy Crush and Minecraft that the Swedish gaming industry has grown incredibly fast. Thanks to these and other games the Swedish game developers have received a good reputation all over the world. Since the gaming industry had a remarkably growth, the gaming companies have had difficulty finding staff with the right skills. Game companies have wanted an upgrade of the aesthetics in elementary school and high school. As a basis for the interview work, a general description of roles and processes in the gaming industry was needed. This is included as background material in this study. In conclusion, it appears that the Swedish gaming industry does not differ from the outside world regarding the roles, but that communication between the roles and the work process varies depending on companies and production. The problem in finding the right skills seems to be related to that the demand is constantly changing.

Branding and its importance to primary and secondary art market in the Czech Republic

Ludvíková, Daniela January 2015 (has links)
This masters thesis identifies and analyzes the aspects and specifics of branding of an artist in the art industry, which is relatively different from the branding which we know from the corporate world. The first section defines the theoretical background of the branding and marketing communication with focus on those aspects that are relative to an art and its market specifics. Theoretical definition in combination with the outcome of qualitative research, which was conducted with outperforming contemporary artists and representatives of leading galleries in Czech Republic, helps to outline the most important factors and subjects influencing the artists brand creation process which is described in the practical part of this masters thesis. Besides the quality of the piece of art itself, the aspect of the strong brand is unquestionably increasing the value of artists production. Therefore, this chapter investigates those factors and subjects that have remarkable impact on the value of the artists pieces of art. The last section of this paper gives local and international best examples of contemporary artists with strong brand.

The Problem of the Artist in Society : Hawthorne, James, and Hemingway

Beggs, Jane K. 08 1900 (has links)
The relationship of James to Hawthorne and of Hemingway to James certainly indicates the close literary relationship of the three writers. This development makes it seem only natural that three such self-conscious artists would have recourse to similar interests and would employ in their writings common themes, ideas, and methods.

Un monopole social et culturel en construction / Speculation, Art Market and the birth of a Modern Art Network in the United States from Industrialization to the 1930's Crash. The Building of a Social and Cultural Monopoly

Smith, Marc Spencer 05 November 2011 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of the dynamics behind the growth of the US art market from the 1800's to the 1930's. Its main goal is to analyze the transformations which allowed the passage from local and regional networks into a national one. More specifically, it deals with how the development of the fine arts in Boston, Philadelphia and New York were based on religious and pastoral ideas and ideologies, as well as on social and cultural stereotypes and conceptions which defined art and the artist. This dissertation shows how the social origins of patrons and the restructuring of society in the nineteenth century played a pivotal in this construction. The arrival of new social groups originating from the industrialization of the country affected the role of artists inside society, as well as their cultural mission and their relationship with the public. This study also shows how new socio-professional categories, such as critics and illustrators, emerged from this new economic context and altered the position of the artist in society with the rise of the printed press. The economic power of these industrial patrons also enabled them to use their investments inside the fine arts to justify and affirm of their new social positions, while also injecting inside the art market strategies and logics from their businesses, thus affecting the functioning of the system.

Effective planning and organisation of a student theatre festival

Le Grange, Rene 11 August 2004 (has links)
The aim of this research project was to determine and describe the challenges and advantages presented to artists taking part in student theatre festivals as well as the challenges and advantages presented to the organisers of such festivals. A further aim of the study was to determine, address and describe the functions of a student theatre festival within the community in which it takes place and then to describe how such a festival could be most effectively organised and planned. The study is original, since very little research has been done on this topic in the past. When collecting data for the project, no documents were found describing such study projects. The findings of this study are also important, since guidelines are given aiding festival organisers and future festival organisers in the effective planning and organising of such an event. The research was conducted using three research methodologies. These were a survey of scholarship, structured and semi-structured interviews and action research. The information gathered by the first two methodologies is described in chapter 2. Information gathered by the action research methodology is described in chapter 3, which is a case study of the 2001 and 2002 Krêkvars arts festivals. After the first festival had ended, it was evaluated in terms of which methods of planning were successful and which were not. The second festival was then planned, adapting the unsuccessful methods and emphasising the successful ones. Thereafter the festival was evaluated again, formulating suggestions for the effective planning and organisation of a student theatre festival. From this research project, it can be concluded that student theatre festivals present many advantages and challenges for those involved. It is therefore necessary for the organisers to be well prepared for the task at hand and to do sufficient planning in order to most effectively organise such an event. / Dissertation (MA (Drama))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Drama / unrestricted

The Unexpected Symbol of the New Woman: Ella Ferris Pell's Salome

Snow, Megan Ashley 01 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis argues that Ella Ferris Pell's 1890 painting, Salome, provides a unique interpretation of the ideals of the New Woman, specifically in terms of reclaiming female power through Salome's confidence in her sexuality. By examining the cultural context in which Pell exhibited her painting, as well as her background as an artist, I hope bring to the light the significant ways in which Pell's Salome participates in the construction of the New Woman in late nineteenth-century culture. Since Pell was an American woman who trained and exhibited in both the United States and France, this paper explores the significance of the New Woman in both countries. Through the examination of these ideas, we can better appreciate the way in which Pell approached her painting and why it was not well received in Paris—despite its popular subject matter, technical execution, and relevance to the popular topic of the women's movement. Drawing upon the rich visual culture of this era, I offer a comparative study of how both images of women and actual women embraced sexuality and femininity as a means of exerting influence over men, and by so doing, carved out a sphere of influence in a male-dominated society.
