The Bold and the Beautiful and Generations : a comparative ethnographic audience study of Zulu-speaking students living in residences on the University of Natal's Durban campus.

This thesis is an ethnographic study of the soap opera viewing patterns and interpretations of Zulu-speaking students living in residences on the Natal University's Durban campus who watch The Bold and the Beautiful (an American soap opera) and Generations (a South African soap opera). It presents an analysis of how the viewing practices of the students compare with the findings of soap opera audience studies conducted abroad. The students' motivations and reasons for watching both soap operas are investigated. The reason for choosing black students as subjects is that I wanted to determine how a soap opera (Generations) which is comprised largely of black cast members and designed with a young black audience in mind, is interpreted and impacts on the lives of said audience, when compared with an American soap opera (The Bold and the Beautiful) which has an almost exclusively white American cast, and is popular with young black viewers in spite of the fact that it appears on the surface to be unrelated to their everyday lives. Individual one-on-one interviews were conducted with 40 students, 20 male and 20 female. The interviews were analysed to gauge how the viewing behaviour of the students differs from, or is similar to, soap opera studies conducted elsewhere in the world. It emerged that the students watch in groups and not alone, and that watching Generations and The Bold and the Beautiful is a social activity, not motivated from loneliness or isolation. The ways in which the students relate to the characters and situations of both soap operas is also examined, in an attempt to establish the role that these two shows play in the creation of the students' identities. The students displayed a tendency to be more critical of Generations than of The Bold and the Beautiful in the sense that they compared it (unfavourably) in terms of quality of production, to its American counterpart, as well as in the sense that they analysed storylines in terms of their own lived experiences and were quick to criticise Generations when they felt that it did not conform to their notions of the reality of being a black South African. They accepted situations and characters on The Bold and the Beautiful far less critically, although they did voice objections to certain characters and situations which they felt were morally questionable in terms of their understanding of right and wrong. It also became apparent that there was a greater emotional involvement with the characters on The Bold and the Beautiful than with those on Generations. The students interpretations of (and level of involvement with) situations, characters and storylines are examined, as well as the ways in which they derive pleasure from both soaps and incorporate them into their own lives. The Sublime and the Beautiful in the Works of Claude-Joseph Vernet

This thesis examines the roles of the sublime and the beautiful in the works of eighteenth-century French landscape painter Claude-Joseph Vernet. An introduction to the study, a history of the sublime and beautiful, and an overview of the way these ideas are portrayed in Vernet's calm and storm pendants are provided. How commissions for these pendants relate to theoretical developments of the sublime and beautiful and how Vernet became aware of the these ideas are addressed. The thesis shows Vernet was not dependent on British patrons or on the century's most influential aesthetic treatise on the sublime and the beautiful by Edmund Burke, because Vernet started painting such themes well before Burke's treatise (1757) and did so in response to French patrons.

Artscapes: Community Perceptions of City Beautification through Murals in Denton, Texas

Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB) is inspired by Keep America Beautiful's model of community engagement to create a clean, beautiful, and vibrant city. The community mural initiative, Artscapes, aims to enliven public spaces, abate graffiti, and inspire community members to keep Denton, Texas, clean and beautiful. The goals of this research project are to understand the impact of Artscapes initiative, community perceptions of public art, and find ways KDB can better align future mural projects with the needs and desires of community members. By talking to artists that have worked with KDB, members of the mural art committee, and community members from the neighborhoods that have existing murals, this research provides input from these three populations to continue creating public art for the Denton community. I discuss the context of my work through Lefebvre's concept of "Right to the City," Rafael Schacter's opposition between sanctioned and non-sanctioned murals, Bourdieu's concept of symbolic and social capital, and David Harvey's work on neoliberalism and the entrepreneurial city.

The Law and Art - Symbolism, Aesthetics, Architecture Abstract The Law and Art can be considered as a field of legal science or as a part of the theory of law, which is beginning to enjoy the interest of lawyers and legal scientists and theoreticians. However, this is not an area of law dealing with the Art Law. The Art Law focuses more on intellectual property law and the application of law in the world of art and artists. This thesis analyzes the theoretical question of whether the law can be understood as a distinct artistic discipline. So called beautiful art. This question also is the main hypothesis of this thesis. The thesis consists of five backbone chapters, in which the author, with the help of partial hypotheses and submitting as much information as possible, seeks to defend or refute the main hypothesis. As a by-product of the research done, the author also introduces a new term "The Art of Law". The Art of Law is supposed to represent possible ways and (the) ways of the connections of particular beautiful and applied arts with the law as a field of human activity. Den utopiska visionen och realiteten: En skola för alla : En komparativ läromedelsanalys utifrån ett likvärdighetsperspektiv i gymnasieskolans läromedel i Svenska 1

Undersökningen grundar sig på fyra olika läromedel som riktar sig mot kursen Svenska 1 på gymnasial nivå. Två av de analyserade läromedlen riktar sig specifikt mot yrkesprogram, vilka är Kontext: svenska 1 för restaurang- och livsmedelsprogrammet (Hedencrona & Smed-Gerdin 2013) och Kontext: svenska 1 för vård- och omsorgsprogrammet (Hedencrona & Smed-Gerdin 2014). De resterande två läromedlen har ingen specifik riktning mot gymnasieprogram, utan riktar sig till alla som läser kursen Svenska 1. Dessa två är Människans texter: svenska 1 (Jeppsson, Mejlgaard & Sjöstedt 2016) och Patos: svenska 1 (Gustavsson 2020). Syftet med undersökningen har varit att undersöka om likvärdig undervisning genomförs i skolan oberoende av gymnasieprogram. Det har varit intressant att undersöka läromedlens innehåll eftersom två av dem så tydligt riktar sig mot specifika program. Med anledning av detta utgör begreppet en skola för alla en väsentlig del av undersökningen och dess resultat.  Undersökningens resultat visar att Kontext: svenska 1 för restaurang- och livsmedelsprogrammet (Hedencrona & Smed-Gerdin 2013) och Kontext: svenska 1 för vård- och omsorgsprogrammet (Hedencrona & Smed-Gerdin 2014) inte lever upp till likvärdigt innehåll och därmed inte en skola för alla. Läromedlen Människans texter: svenska 1 (Jeppsson, Mejlgaard & Sjöstedt 2016) och Patos: svenska 1 (Gustavsson 2020) visar bättre tendenser att leva upp till likvärdigt innehåll i relation till de andra läromedlen och därmed en skola för alla. Slutsatsen visar att det generellt finns stora problem i skolan kring likvärdig undervisning, vilket måste tas på största allvar. Om inte läromedlen genomsyras av likvärdighet kan det inte garanteras att undervisningen genomsyras av det. Det är således väsentligt av läromedelsförfattare att producera läromedel baserat på aktuell forskning.

The work deals with the concept of beautiful style and its use in Czech literature of art history. Jaromír Pečírka introduced the term known from German professional literature to the Czech environment in the 1930s in relation to sculpture. It was applied to the history of Gothic painting by Antonín Matějček. After a short turnaround, associated with the name of Pavel Kropáček, the tradition of using the term was renewed by Jaroslav Pešina, who created a concept valid and recognized to this day. In relation to sculpture, Albert Kutal and his successor Jaromír Homolka had a similar role. The Czech specificity is the application of the term in relation to architecture, which was dealt with mainly by Dobroslav Líbal. Among the younger researchers, the work of Milena Bartlová, Jan Royt, Jan Klípa and Michaela Ottová is followed. The work follows individual concepts and their changes.

The thesis in its first part outlines in general the iconographical type of pietà and its genesis from the very beginning of the representation of this type until the end of the 14th century. Furthermore the work interprets the literary sources and its impact on the form of medieval pietàs. The emphasis in all chapters of this work will be put in the first place on the type of the so called Beautiful pietàs of the Beautiful Style. In the first, theoretical part of the work the author presents, among others, an interpretation of Beautiful pietàs' gestures. The second part of the thesis treats seven concrete Beautiful pietàs chosen as illustrative representatives of the iconographical type they belong to. The attention will be devoted to the Pietà of Marburg, Pietà of Baden, Pietà of St. Elisabeth in Wrocław, Pietà of the Kreuzenstein Castle, K ivák's Pietà, Pietà from the Hermitage Museum in Petersburg and Pietà of Celje. In the case of these concrete examples will be summarized and interpreted the existing research outputs. Subsequently the author will attempt to solve some of the problems and questions relating to the concrete sculptures concerning in particular the time of their creation, provenance, the original placement and authorship.

Genre and globalization : working title films, the British romantic comedy and the global film market

This thesis seeks to better understand the relationship of film genre to globalization through an examination of the use of the British romantic comedy and other related genres by the production company Working Title Films (WTF) from the 1900s through the 2000s. Because of the sudden and unexpected global success of British romantic comedies by Working Title Films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, the 1990s is a significant period for the study of the genre. In this examination the process of globalization is understood as one of complex connectivity postulated by John Tomlinson in Globalization and Culture as ‘the rapidly developing and ever-densening network of interconnections and interdependences that characterize modern social life’. This theory of globalization is used as a methodological framework to understand the complex network of global and local interconnections that has driven the development of Working Title Films over the past twenty five years to becoming one of the most important British production companies in the international film industry. Through a detailed analysis of the practices of development, production, distribution and exhibition by Working Title Films and the Hollywood dominated global film industry, this thesis seeks to understand the function of genre and genre films as cultural products, economic products and meaningful representations in the global market and to better understand Hollywood, mainstream film and cinema as social institution. The analysis in the following chapters serves as evidence to support the central argument of this thesis that the use of genre in the film industry’s production, distribution and exhibition processes of globalization was the critical area for Working Title Films to master in order to produce value as meaningful audience appeal and connectivity to global audiences for on-going economic success.
