Dá Me Na-Nu-Wu-Tsi: “Our Relations All of Mother Earth” Timber Mountain Ethnographic ReportStoffle, Richard W., Zedeño, M. Nieves, Arnold, Richard, Van Vlack, Kathleen, Buttram, Mance, Fauland, Heather, Martinez, Aja, Toupal, Heather 16 September 2006 (has links)
This report presents the results of ethnographic fieldwork conducted at Timber Mountain Caldera (TMC) on the NTS. Volcanic in origin, the caldera is a geologic feature that was formed when a large volcano collapse thousands of years ago producing the large circular crater that exists today. Since that event, the caldera has experienced other volcanic eruptions making a complex topographic landscape.
The ethnographic fieldwork (conducted in 2005) that forms the foundation of this report included official tribal representatives from the Owens Valley Paiute, Western Shoshone, and Southern Paiute ethnic groups. This report presents the findings of the tribal representatives’ visits to several sites in the TMC and the cultural value associated with it. These research findings are based upon interviews conducted with tribal representatives selected by the American Indian Writers Subgroup of the culturally affiliated Consolidated Group of Tribes and Organizations (CGTO).

History, identity, art: visually expressing Nicodemus, Kansas' identityEdwards, Leah January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture / Mary Catherine (Katie) Kingery-Page / History is embedded in a landscape. History of a community is embedded in the landscape where land was inhabited, cultivated, and where people have and continue to thrive. Rural communities have this embedded history and culture to look back. However, these communities are suffering from loss of population, jobs, economic stability, and accessibility (Woods 2008). This phenomenon can destroy not only communities and peoples’ lives, but also the history and culture that is embedded in a landscape.
Nicodemus, Kansas a rural communities with an important history. This history begins after the Civil War during times of new found freedom and the reality of independence for many former African-American slaves. The residents and descendants of Nicodemus are passionate and proud of their history and see their community identity as embedded in the history and culture.
Nicodemus has experienced loss of population and economic vitality throughout its history. However, Nicodemans’ strong connection to the history remains intact. The study argues that art can provide a way of expressing Nicodemus, Kansas’s identity.
This study is primarily an art-based investigation into what materials, mediums, and forms of art can best express the identity and history of Nicodemus, Kansas. Art-based research is less concerned with the discovery of truth than with the creation of meaning (Eisner 1981). “...[V]isual art is a significant source of information about the social world, including cultural aspects of social life” (Leavy 2009, 218). Research methods include historiography, literature review, oral history, reflexive critique and site visits, culminating in the creation of a series of mixed media artworks. Through the research and creation of artworks, the identity of Nicodemus, Kansas is expressed visually.

Hodnotenie a zmeny v rozšírení nelesnej drevinovej vegetácie v krajine / Evaluation and charges in the extent of non-ferest woody vegetation in landscapeDemková, Katarína January 2015 (has links)
Non-forest woody vegetation is an important landscape feature of agricultural/rural landscape. Ph.D. thesis deals with evaluation of current state of non-forest woody vegetation, historical development and changes in configuration and composition in landscape. Non-forest woody vegetation was investigated in two physical-geographical different model areas (Kutnohorsko Region and White Carpathians). The thesis is based on own data collected in the field and digitized on historical aerial photos and current ortho-photos. After that, data were analyzed in relation to natural conditions and changes of landscape structure since 50s of 20th century until present. Comparing both model areas, assumed differences in character of non-forest woody vegetation, species composition, dominated type as well as relation to habitats/locations were confirmed. However, rapid changes of landscape structure in the last 60 years were caused by the same driving forces such as re-allotment, mechanization and intensification of agriculture. After 1989, processes such extensification of agriculture and land abandonment played the main role in landscape, especially in mountain regions. The second aim of the Ph.D. thesis was to identify changes in spatial configuration of non- forest woody vegetation in two...

Paisagem cultural e a experiência urbana latino-americana Buenos Aires/Rio de Janeiro / Cultural landscape and the latin american urban experience Buenos Aires and Rio de JaneiroChiuratto, Agnes Helena 07 April 2015 (has links)
Our goal is to investigate the process of formation of the concept of Cultural Landscape and its applicability as a preservation tool and management of urban heritage in the context of growth and transformation of Latin American cities. Given the scope of the concept of cultural landscape, the study begins with a first effort to trace a historical overview of the emergence of the issue in international discussion of nuclei and their development and application by national organ preservation. Once clarified the process of historical and conceptual training, we analyze the overall picture of the 88 Cultural Landscapes appearing today in the World Heritage list in an attempt to understand, through the set of features, which the criteria taken into account in practice to grant the title to the sites pleiteam international recognition of this category of assets. With the big picture in mind, we start from the overall study for the site specific, examining two very relevant documents to the maturation of the discussion of Cultural Landscapes in the Latin American urban context: the application package to the Cultural Landscape of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. With this comparative analysis of two urban sites, we seek to understand what features used as justification for a title in this category, as the two cities have dealt with the issue of preservation of urban heritage and what the possible reasons for the denial or grant of recognition given by international organization in both cases. Thus, we could clarify, at the end of the research, the potential and limitations presented by this (not so) new category of preservation that is proposed from the outset, to provide a broader and more integrated view of preservation of historical sites on a large scale in attempt to list the main contributions that the World Heritage category could add to the discussions of preservation of complex and dynamic urban areas.

The cultural landscape and the urban planning of the mid-size cities are the two themes that interweave in this master thesis. When we study the São Leopoldo’s historic center, with the assist of the methodology proposed by the Andalusian Historical Heritage Institute (IAPH), we intend to contribute with the urban planning instruments available to the society, in the gestion of the urban space, with the intentions to guarantee not just the preservation, but with the vitality of then. Currently, the cultural landscape is the object of the study of many researchers related to the cultural heritage, and the identification in the urban space has in the city of Sevilha a practical example of application of the concept. In Sevilha, the IAPH come up with a formulation of one guide of the landscape, divide in two volumes: identification and planning. This master thesis was divided in four chapters, In the first chapter we introduce the justifications that lead us to choose the city of São Leopoldo as the object of study. In the second chapter, we studied the formation of the concept of cultural landscape, and how the preservation’s institutes of Brazil articulate their operation. In the third chapter, we studied the IAPH’s workflow. In the fourth and last
chapter we studied if to the case of São Leopoldo, a landscape’s guide is a proper toll, and what ways the model proposed by the IAPH could be adapted to the reality of a mid-size city. To do this, we establish a parallel in between the IAPH’s identification volume and the available bibliography of similar themes in São Leopoldo.

In order to do this, the study discusses the importance of revealing an occult landscape to the reader, its cultural origin and complex understanding. The chapter that brings this analysis shows how the work reflects the historical and political conditions of domination, social differences, identifying occasionally a slightly engaged accent in Mia Coutos writing, as much as his ideological position and denouncement. Among the detached subjects in the work is African animism, which originates several supernatural circumstances in the plot, as a constant remembrance: in Africa, spirits are everywhere, keeping intense relationship with the people. Around this issue, the thesis discusses the fact that part of the critics classify the work in genres such as the Magical Realism, the Marvellous and the Fantastic. Also the narrative strategies of this author are investigated, as his regular options in the creation of the plots, characters, names of characters and epigraphs. Based on these marks and in other common traces to all his novels perhaps equally present in his short stories we find adequacy between the dichotomic thought system, through the work, and the phrasings that reveal something significant: Mia Coutos novels are propositive, especially when they invite the reader to the constant movement of questioning their proper certainties

Contesting the Commemorative Narrative: Planning for Richmond’s Cultural LandscapeCameron, Hannah M 01 January 2018 (has links)
Abstract: New Orleans, Baltimore, and Charlottesville are reevaluating the presence of Confederate statues in their built environment. Known as the Capital of the Confederacy, Richmond’s cultural landscape is visible through the connection of two historical spaces, Monument Avenue and Shockoe Bottom. Both serve as a powerful case study for how the commemorative narrative of these spaces is contested today and how barriers that exist influence urban planning processes and outcomes.

Ljud i landskapet : Akustikarkeologi och öländska klangstenarHultman, Maja January 2007 (has links)

The aim of this work is to give an example of how archaeoacoustics can broaden our understanding of archaeological remains and to further contribute to the almost non-existing research of ringing stones. With a theoretical discussion about sound from three different perspectives and by means of using different kinds of analysis, this essay will show that there are unknown relations between the three known ölandic ringing stones and the cultural landscape of Öland. Possible patterns in the placement of the stones and the possibility of the sound in this soundscape will be investigated. The essay will also suggest a resonant stone typology and discuss the necessity of one. Finally, the intention is also to shed new light upon the discussion on what the uses of the ringing stones might have been.

A place to get it all back: the cultural landscape of cottagers in Nopiming Provincial ParkZielinski, Anjanette 09 September 2008 (has links)
Second home use or cottaging is an increasingly desirable practice across Canada. In Manitoba, cottaging sub-divisions are generally situated along lakes and rivers in the province, many of which are situated on Crown land or in provincial parks. This study explored what is meaningful about cottaging to bring about a better understanding of the importance of cottaging as a culturally meaningful social practice. The objectives of the research were to identify what makes Flanders Lake and surrounding area of Nopiming Provincial Park a meaningful place for cottagers; determine if there are shared meanings among cottagers; and consider the implications of the cultural landscape of cottagers for natural resource management.
The case study research considered the sense of place that is derived from cottagers’ experiences and what specifically contributes to the significance of cottage culture in the cottaging sub-division of Flanders Lake, Manitoba. A qualitative, interpretive research design was used for data collection. Photo-elicitation also known as resident employed photography was used, whereby cottagers were asked to photograph things, places or people that represented meaningful aspects about cottaging and the surrounding area. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individual participants to validate and triangulate perspectives. Using NVivo 7 qualitative software to manage data and elicit themes, a cultural landscape framework of cottagers was developed. Cottagers cited recreational activities, connections with people, interactions with nature and the tonic-like effects of cottaging experiences, as the most meaningful aspects of cottaging. The study showed that it is possible to determine the most meaningful aspects of a place, and that many of those attributes are shared between community members. However, dissecting those meanings into constituent parts of a collective body of shared, interrelated and sometimes dependent meanings is complex, and not always possible. Further study on the cultural landscape of additional cottaging communities and of other area stakeholders is recommended given the increasing desirability and interest in cottaging, and potential for negotiating place meanings in multiple land use areas. / October 2008
