Thus, the contemporary in dance is not determined by chronological factor, but as a suspended art where past, present and future crosses each other. The work is composed of different analytical essays. Its parts are offered as movable possibilities of combination, portions that are intertwined, flowing movements. It is a relational and transitory map of doings and sayings related to dance, in which, mainly, the arguments of Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Giorgio Agamben, Josette Feral and José Gil are essential. The first part is dedicated to problematize different corporealities: identifies games with the variation and plasticity of the body, such as attempts to produce new modes of perception and affection. In this sense, it presents the method Percepção Física, developed by director Alejandro Ahmed with Grupo Cena 11 Cia. de Dança. And also discusses performances of dancers and coreographers such as Eduardo Fukushima (SP) and Micheline Torres (RJ), whose bodies are permanently conceived as a becoming-other. Next, dance is investigated from a theoretical perspective of theatricality, that is, dance is understood as an artistic act that transform reality and violation of ordinary life. It is considered that theatricality results from dynamic perceptions the look that links the observed, either subject or object, to an observer, and only thus, gives rise to fiction. To search for different possibilities of action in the contemporary scene, creations capable of producing surprising effects related to the habitual, as well, displacements and deviations, are analysed.

This investigation focus on theory and practice. In theoretical terms, studies on Performance and Theatre were carried out, based on Schechner (2006) and Feral (2003); the relationship between game and theatre was examined from the perspectives of Huizinga (2001), Caillois (1994) and Pavis (1999). The game analysis was based on RPG view point and its live version, LARP (Live Action Roleplaying). Regarding practice, two experiments with LARP were carried out. In both, The Crucible , by Arthur Miller, was used as pre-text. In these experiences, students from the first semester majoring in theatre used elements of Drama and Theatre Games. The analysis of both practices point to similarities between the Game Master and the Teacher-in-role, a planning based on episodes, and a game dimension oriented by a pre-text. This investigation also included a conceptual analysis of game, acting and representation / Esta pesquisa examina as similaridades entre ROLEPLAYING GAME e o Process Drama, identificando seus aspectos de teatralidade e performatividade, ambos comuns ao ROLEPLAYING GAME e ao teatro.

Schang-Norbelly, Marie-Cécile 04 December 2017 (has links)
The comédie mêlée d’ariettes is a type of opéra-comique which emerged in the middle of the 18th century in France. Since the 1990s, artists and academics have shown renewed interest for this genre which came into being in a context characterized by the renewal of comedy and the emergence of aesthetics as a philosophical discipline. As a consequence, the comédie mêlée d’ariettes illustrates a shift of focus away from classical poetics and a significant change in the criteria used to judge the value of a work of art: critics partly turned away from the object in order focus on the subject – from then on, what mattered in the assessment of a work of art was the effect it produced. As playwrights let go of academics standards, the comédie mêlée d’ariettes repertoire is very diverse and therefore the kinship between the various plays is not self-evident. Their most obvious common point is the alternation of spoken dialogues and aria – or tunes, which creates a formal discontinuity that is to be added to the stylistic and generic discontinuity. For all these reasons, the comédie mêlée d’ariettes has often been denied the name of a “genre”. In any case, it proves difficult to formalize it into a poetics. However, analyzing the impact the comédie mêlée d’ariettes made on the public highlights both the unity of the repertoire and the internal coherence of each play. Consequently, it seems relevant to adopt an aesthetical rather than a poetical approach, that is to say to elaborate a dramatic theory of the genre favouring an impressionist logic which leads to comparisons with painting and the novel. The non-linear dramatic progression of the genre therefore appears to be the consequence of an aesthetics polarized around “stage pictures” (tableaux) also called “situations” The latter encourage both the sudden emergence of sensitivity amid the trivial reality and the apparition of a poetical voice which expressed a nostalgia that traditional lyrical poetry could no more voice.

Performing Historical Narrative at the Canadian War Museum: Space, Objects and Bodies as Performers

Beattie, Ashlee E. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the symmetry between theatres and museums, and investigates how a museum experience is similar to a theatrical event. Particularly, this project examines how the Canadian War Museum performs historical narrative through its use of three performative elements of a theatre production: space, objects and actor’s body. Firstly, this thesis analyses how creating a historical narrative is similar to fiction writing and play writing. It follows the argument of Hayden White and Michel de Certeau who recognize a historical narrative as a performative act. Accordingly, this thesis examines the First World War exhibit at the Canadian War Museum as a space of performance. I apply Lubomír Doležel’s literary theory on possible worlds, illustrating how a museum space can create unique characteristics of a possible world of fiction and of history. Secondly, this thesis employs Marie-Laure Ryan’s theory of narrativity to discuss how museum objects construct and perform their stories. I argue that the objects in museums are presented to the public in a state of museality similar to the condition of theatricality in a theatre performance. Lastly, this thesis investigates the performance of people by applying various theories of performance, such as Michael Kirby’s non-acting/acting continuum, Jiří Veltruský’s concept of the stage figure, and Freddie Rokem’s theories of actors as “hyper-historians.” In this way, this thesis explores concrete case studies of employee/visitor interactions and expands on how these communications transform the people within the walls of the museum into performers of historical narrative. Moreover, according to Antoine Prost, the museum as an institution is an educational and cultural authority. As a result, in all of these performative situations, the Canadian War Museum presents a historical narrative to its visitors with which it can help shape a sense of national identity, the events Canadians choose to commemorate and their personal and/or collective memories. In its interdisciplinary scope, this thesis calls upon theories from a variety of academic fields, such as performance studies, history and cultural studies, museology, and literary studies. Most importantly, however, this project offers a new perspective on the performative potentials of a national history museum.

The evolution of theatricality in sixteenth century Spanish Eucharistic Dramas

Mérique, Cyril 19 November 2011 (has links)
Allthough17th century baroque Spanish sacramental plays have been thoroughly studied, the same cannot be said of 16th century Spanish Eucharistic dramas and even less so of the theme of specific theatricality in the modest Renaissance plays. The study of 16th century Eucharistic plays required prior thought on the origins of a dramatic genre which developed in the Iberian peninsula throughout the Renaissance years, a period when religion was frequently the main issue (The crypto-Judaism, Council of Trent, the Counter-Reformation and the Moriscos). However, it is not just the obsessive questioning concerning the origins of Eucharistic dramas which guided these studies but above all the theatricality concept, by that we mean the signs containing a spectacularity potential within the dramatic text. This is essential in order to understand how this kind of theatre gradually acquired its own specific characteristics. We have worked on thirty-two original plays written in different styles. Our first point of interest was the dramatic space which shows that hellish and heavenly places acquire an increasing importance in this kind of theatre. The analysis of dialogues and of how they are linked together then allowed us to emphasize the space taken up by the “attack” and “movement-towards” figures (Michel Vinaver’s terminology). Additionally, by taking inspiration from semiotic concepts relative to “surface semio-narrative” patterns like the Greimas’ actancial model, we have shown different discursive strategies specific to Eucharistic dramas. This allowed us to study more thoroughly the mechanisms determining the dialogues and which characterize the links between the characters of this theatre. The evolution of comical elements has been highlighted by a detailed study of language and gestural techniques as well as a study of the effects produced by using typical theatre characters. Finally, an approach of the allegory in theatricality (element considered as fundamental in Spanish sacramental plays), has emphasized to which extent successive developments of this structure in 16th century Eucharistic drama have given a coherent structure to theatricality making the effects even more spectacular.

To Sue and Make Noise' - Legal theatricality and civic didacticism in Boston Legal

Kanzler, Katja 08 April 2015 (has links)
The legal drama episode from which this dialogue is taken depicts an impossible case: a Sudanese immigrant, who lost most of his family to the violence in Darfur, wants to sue the U.S. government for failing to intervene in the face of obvious genocide. The case is unwinnable. Lori Colson’s construction of a legal basis for the case is more than shaky. But neither the client nor his lawyers expect to win the case. Their proclaimed objective – to “make noise” – pinpoints a significant cultural potential of litigation, of its “real” practice in the courtroom and, even more importantly, in its various forms of mass-medialization and fictionalization: to raise public awareness about instances of injustice, to educate the public and encourage civic debate.

Des sources ibériques du théâtre élisabéthain et jacobéen : réseaux d'influence, circulation des textes, dramaturgie et théâtralité / Iberian sources of Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre : networks of influence, circulation of texts, dramaturgy and theatricality

Demoux, Anna 20 September 2019 (has links)
This dissertation proposes to reassess the status of Iberian sources within a corpus of English plays staged between the last years of the reign of Elizabeth I and the beginning of the Jacobean era, a period marked by deep socio-cultural changes. It does not focus on the well-known and often studied tension between Hispanophilia and Hispanophobia which characterises the representation of Anglo-Iberian relations at the time, but considers this relationship from a textual, cultural and aesthetic perspective including the go-betweens that, at a European scale, enabled these texts to circulate while they were altering them. This work thus deals with the networks of influence of Iberian texts belonging to 15th-and-16th-century court culture and the impact they had on early modern English drama. In particular, it tackles the sentimental romance Tractado de amores de Arnalte y Lucenda by Diego de San Pedro, court poetry by Juan Boscán and Garcilaso de la Vega with the long poem Leandro and sonnet XXIX « Pasando el mar Leandro el animoso », the pastoral romance Los siete libros de La Diana by Jorge de Montemayor and the anonymously published picaresque tale La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes, y de sus fortunas y adversidades. These works are set in conversation with didactic and philosophical texts such as El libro aureo de Marco Aurelio by Antonio de Guevara, The Courtier by Baldassare Castiglione translated by Boscán and El Examen de Ingenios by Juan Huarte de San Juan: they all deal with the figure of the courtier and the notion of « service ». As to the corpus of English dramatic texts chosen for this study, it is mainly composed of plays by Shakespeare, notably The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Love’s Labour’s Lost, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Twelfth Night et The Winter’s Tale. These works are related to other contemporary writings: Hero and Leander by Christopher Marlowe, Blurt Master Constable by Thomas Dekker, along with texts by John Lyly and Ben Jonson. By supplementing and redirecting the studies addressing plots and characters in the English dramatic literature, the traditional field of investigation of Source Studies, this dissertation discusses these elements from a perspective which takes into account the societal and theatrical dimensions inherent to the literature born out of the Iberian court society : this innovative literature reflects, shapes and questions especially the theatricality of an environment where individuals never cease to stage themselves. Alternately authors, dedicatees and key-characters and figures of these fictions they enjoy thoroughly, the members of the Iberian court society thus provide early modern English writers with a playground conducive to dramaturgical innovation and experimentation.

Divadelní znaky v představení "Škola Malého stromu" / Theatrical Signs in the Performance "The Education of Little Tree"

Axmanová, Petra January 2010 (has links)
The thesis examines a sign and its theory, focusing on the function of sign in art, particularly in theatre. Both communication conditions and meaning production are covered. The practical part analyzes particular theatrical signs in 'The Education of Little Tree' performance. Selected parts of the performance are examined in detail with regards to the theatrical signs and generating meaning in terms of work with gesture. Further it studies changes of actors' characters and as well as analogue and digital communication. It deals with the question how to create a wide range of characters and settings while using only a very limited selection of props, coulisses and costumes. The results of nonverbal communication analysis are presented in the conclusion of the thesis.
