Present peanut production in Brazil is around 287,000 tons, and São Paulo is the main producing State. The peanut crop faces pest attack problems, among which the thrips, Enneothrips flavens, is the most remarkable, since it significantly reduces yield. This research, consisting of 8 field experiments carried out during the 2006/07 and 2007/08 growing seasons, was designed and conducted to evaluate the behavior of peanut cultivars of the upright and runner growth habits under the thrips attack in field conditions, as well as to determine the period during which the crop must be protected, and to establish the best strategy of control. The results allowed to obtain the following informations: a) Cultivar behavior under no pest control: in either growth habit group, the cultivars were similarly infested by nymphs and adults of E. flavens; b) Cultivar behavior under controlled and not controlled conditions: application of lambda-cialotrina and thiametoxan reduces thrips infestations in both cultivar groups; the runner growing cultivar IAC Caiapó was less affected by suppression of control, showing a “tolerance” type of resistance to the insect; c) Yield performance as related to the period of protection: for the upright cultivars, the highest yields and lower number of thrips were observed when the crop was protected between 10 to 70 days, as well as between 20- 70 and 30-70 after emergence; for the runner cultivars, the best periods of protection were 10-100, as well as 20-100 days after emergence; d) Strategies of thrips control, considering cultivar behavior (integrated management): seed treatment with the insecticides tested was effective to protect the crop up to 34 days after emergence in both upright and runner cultivars; for the cultivar IAC Tatu ST, the best control can be obtained with seed treatment and 10-10 day sprayings after the period of the seed treatment effect...
