Treasures in Transition : -On Connecting to Stone

Frølund Bech, Louise January 2016 (has links)
The things we have an intimate connection to, handle, collect, and move around with us, are treasures that we need to hold on to. They are important in coping with the balance of movement and stability in a fast-changing world. This project is an investigation of the relationship between people and objects through the making and handling of stones. I explore why and how we connect intimately with physical objects, how they become treasures to us and what it means. Through digging into the stones, connecting to their story of endurance, change and solidity, and eventually letting them go, I explore the role of touching and paying attention, in making and relating to objects and transformation. The stone objects are made from pieces of rock I have collected while travelling. All of them have been transformed by human hands before I picked them out, and many have been given out and then returned to me. Through this ongoing process of transformation and physical encounters, it is becoming clear to me that connection is not only about solidity and stillness, but also about being part of the transformation. Stone as a material is both solid and changing. I aim to make objects of stone that attract and encourage people to engage with them – to experience the pleasure and groundedness that slowing down, zooming in and getting in touch can offer.

Smart Radio Control System (For Flight Test Centers)

Rubio, Pedro, Alvarez, Jesus 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2015 Conference Proceedings / The Fifty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 26-29, 2015 / Bally's Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV / Among the rich infrastructure of a Telemetry/Ground Station Center dwells the subset dedicated to radio communications. Radios are mainly used to communicate with the aircraft under test in order to give guidance and feedback from ground specialists. Sometimes, however, radios themselves become the subject of the test, requiring a full set of them with all their features and capabilities (Military Modes, HF ALE, SELCAL, etc). Remote control (and audio routing) of these radios is a critical as infrastructures scale over tens of radios, distributed amid different test centers separated by hundreds of kilometers. Addition of a remote touch user interface, MIL COMSEC and TRANSEC modes, automatic audio routing, together with a maintenance free requirement, makes the whole issue far more difficult to manage. Airbus Defense & Space has developed a Smart Radio Control System allowing to profit from those advantages and more benefits: *Intuitive Touch UI *Automatic Audio Routing *Distributed infrastructure (network based) *Autonomous and service free (no one, other than FTC needed to operate it) *Heterogeneous (any radio can be controlled by creating a plug & play library) *Special Modes support (COMSEC, TRANSEC, HF ALE, and SELCAL) Future additions will include, amongst others, VoIP integration and tablet use.

Losing Vision: What Can Art Gain in the Absence of Sight?

Rothman, Seana 01 January 2015 (has links)
This paper addresses the relationship between the visually impaired and the visual arts. The first section focuses on the scientific background of sight and vision disorders, as well as touch. Current research indicates that the blind can process complex spatial information through touch, just as the sighted can through vision. Thus visual art can be accessible to visually impaired people if it contains tactile information, such as 3D shapes or textures. However, galleries traditionally display art that visitors are only able to interpret visually, excluding the visually impaired and blind. My Fall project aims to challenge the dominant visual mode of interaction with art through a personal lens. By creating 3D works that are touch-accessible, both sighted and non-sighted people can experience my art.

Vuxna patienters upplevelser av fysisk beröring vid omvårdnad : En litteraturöversikt / Adult patients' experiences of physical touch in nursing care : A litterature review

Kullén, Julia, Neumann Nordenbäck, Linnea January 2017 (has links)
Background: Nurses use touch on a daily basis in their work. They use touch to comfort, and because of necessity in their job assignments. These two kinds of touch are called expressive and instrumental touch. Touch has been shown to strengthen the relationship between nurses and patients, also to support patients’ well-being. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to illustrate adult patients’ experiences of touch in somatic care. Method: The method for the study was a literature review. Results: Four main themes and two subthemes emerged in the analyze; to be seen as a human being with the subtheme the meaning of communication in the experience of being touched, how touch can convey trust and security, the meaning of being in control and to dislike a male nurse with the subtheme attitudes towards gender regarding intimate care. Discussion: The outcome highlights the importance of making nursing care more patient-centered. Yet the authors consider that further research in this domain is needed about patients’ experience of touch to enable better patient-centered care.

The Role of Touch in Mitigating Withdrawal Symptoms and Increasing Attachment Outcomes in Opioid Exposed Infants

Scrimshaw-Hall, Emma 01 January 2017 (has links)
Abstract According to Bowlby, infants have a universal need to seek close proximity with their caregiver when under distress or threatened. This study seeks to look at attachment in a population that is undergoing extreme distress as they suffer from opioid withdrawal within the first few weeks of life. It aims to explore the role touch (kangaroo care) can have in creating the secure base that attachment theorists describe as the basis for all future attachments, and in reducing the length of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. It is hypothesized that infants born with drug dependencies who receive increased touch and holding throughout their withdrawal will have a shorter duration of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and will be more securely attached at 18 months than those who do not receive increased touch. It is also hypothesized that infants whose caregivers reported high scores of bonding with their infants in the first year of life will be more securely attached than those with lower scores of bonding. Infants who were sent home with their birth parents after discharge are hypothesized to be more securely attached at 18 months with their caregiver than infants who were sent home to a foster family. The results of this study will contribute to attachment literature in a population where research is lacking, and will add to the knowledge on Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome treatment.
