Editorial: Transgender

Vollbrecht, Ralf, Dallmann, Christine 21 July 2017 (has links)

Queer na pokračování: Rozkvět trans ženské literatury v Severní Americe / Ongoing Queerness: The Flourishing of Trans Women's Literature in North America

Rose, Jamie January 2020 (has links)
(English) This master's thesis describes how, within the space of a single decade (2010-2019), transgender women's literature underwent significant development when it came to the production of novels and literary production more broadly. Written to be accessible to those unfamiliar with transgender literature and the internal workings of trans communities as possible, this thesis begins by describing in detail the socio-political changes in how trans people lived and were perceived over the past decade, with particular attention paid to the changes in the media landscape, the recent surge of people coming out as transgender and the conservative backlash. Methodologically, this thesis utilises the viewpoint of transgender studies, which focuses to the material and socio-political conditions that facilitate trans cultural production and the ways in which trans literature engages with the politics of representation through the act of self- representation. It should be noted that this thesis only considers physically published literature written by trans women - a restriction that, the author acknowledges, helps reinforce the hegemony of the publishing industry - with special attention paid to the genre of the novel, and does not view works by cisgender authors that deal with transgender themes as...

Social patterns and pathways of HIV care among HIV-positive transgender women

Hines, Dana Darnell 23 June 2015 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Transgender women have the highest HIV prevalence rates of all gender and sexual minorities, yet are less likely to enter and be retained in HIV care. As a result, they are at high risk for HIV-related morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to describe the illness career of transgender women living with HIV and to describe how interactions with health care providers and important others influenced their illness trajectory. The findings are a theoretical model that includes four stages: Having the world come crashing down, shutting out the world, living in a dark world, and reconstructing the world. Relationships within the social network (family, friends, and romantic partners) and the network of health care providers provided the context of the women's illness careers. Pivotal moments marked movement from one phase to the next. Having the World Crashing Down was the first stage that occurred when the participants were diagnosed with HIV. They felt that their lives as they knew them had been destroyed. They indicated that the "whole world just shattered" the moment they found out they had HIV. Shutting Out the World occurred next. During this stage, many participants experienced withdrawal, denial, social isolation and loneliness. As they struggled with their diagnosis, they often avoided HIV care and avoided contact with important others. During the third stage, Living in a Dark World, participants descended into a dark phase of self-destructive life and health-threatening behaviors following their diagnosis. During the fourth stage, Reconstructing the World, participants began to reestablish themselves in the world and found new ways to reengage with important others and resume meaningful life activities. Findings confirm that the illness careers of HIV-positive transgender women are influenced by the social context of the health care setting and interactions with health care providers and important others.

The Son and Daughter Who Wander: Representations of Transgender in Takako Shimura's Wandering Son

Hoskins, John S 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the representations of transgender in Takako Shimura’s manga Wandering Son (Hōrō Musuko). Wandering Son (2002 to present) is a manga that focuses on their group of middle school friends with two transgender characters, a boy that wants to be a girl and a girl that wans to be a boy, at its center. The story follows the friends’ lives and their struggles with their transgender status in their everyday lives. I explore this work in two ways. First, I look at the transgendered characters’ navigation of gender and their gender roles within the realm of school. The characters’ subversion of school uniforms and their transgendered activities during school festivals serve to show difference in acceptance of transgender by who performs it and where it is performed in the manga. Second, I look at the way that characters, both transgendered and gender-normative, negotiate their gender identities through the use of language. I look at linguistic features such as final particle and personal pronoun to explore how these features are used to define and display the characters’ actual and desired gender identities. Shimura uses gendered languages to explore characters’ creation of their gender identity, resulting in clear gender identities for those who use gendered language and unclear gender identities for those who do not.

Transgender in Neverland: Dysphoria in a Supernatural Anime

Arsenault, Arya 09 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This research asks the question of why the anime Zombie Land Saga has been hailed as positive and progressive transgender representation by international fans. I examine a famous episode in which the character Lily Hoshikawa comes out as transgender in terms of its themes of gender dysphoria and identity. After considering the changing understanding about these concepts in Japan as a result of Gender Identity Disorder, those two themes are suggested as key to popularity. The impact of the “wrong body” narrative created by GID on transgender culture in Japan is considered through personal accounts and commentary on recent changes. I conclude that dysphoria and gender identity are key to understanding the story’s reception among fans, and that it makes subtle but meaningful deviations from the narrative created by adherence to a Gender Identity Disorder paradigm.

Thinkable Futures, Permissible Forms of Life: Listening to Talk about Trans Youth and Early Gender Transition

Pyne, Jake 09 1900 (has links)
This is a time of expanding futures for transgender youth who are able to “buy time” by blocking puberty and transitioning young. Twenty years of clinical literature indicates that suppressing puberty can be lifesaving for trans youth, allowing them to avoid the distress and harm associated with transgender lives writ large. A growing number of “gender affirming” clinics now offer young trans people greater autonomy over their bodies, their futures, and their future bodies. Yet there remain troubling disparities, with indications that clinics are primarily serving white middle class trans youth and that autistic trans youth face delays. This thesis is a discourse analysis of 18 interviews with international health and mental health clinicians and 10 interviews with key stakeholders. Drawing from the literature of queer temporalities, sociological work on time and social power, queer and trans of colour critique, critical disability studies, critical autism studies, and transgender studies, I use an “interpretive repertoire” analysis to ask: How have puberty suppression and early gender transition become thinkable futures for trans youth? This thesis finds that the conditions of possibility that make early transition possible for some, are the same that foreclose it for others. The discourses of maturity and cognitive age, the expected “chrononormative” narrative, and the discourses of crisis and the “race against time”, each work to make outsiders of autistic and racialized trans youth in particular. While there is much to celebrate in the new futures available to trans youth, I argue that puberty blockers currently function as a “switchpoint” moving privileged trans youth onto a track toward even greater privilege, and widening the gap in life opportunities. This thesis introduces the concept of “the temporality of privilege” and calls for greater attention to the political implications augured by the contemporary scene of gender-affirming care for trans youth. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / We are in a time of expanding futures for transgender youth who are able to “buy time” by blocking puberty and transitioning to a new gender while young. Clinical research and literature suggest this as a lifesaving option for trans youth, allowing them to avoid distress and harm. Yet there remain troubling disparities with this treatment. Many clinics report they are primarily serving white middle class trans youth and there are some indications that autistic trans youth may be stalled or delayed in the process. I report on a discourse analysis of 18 interviews with health and mental health clinicians across six countries, in addition to 10 interviews with community level experts. I draw on a range of theory and an “interpretive repertoire” analysis to theorize how these futures become thinkable and possible for trans youth, while considering the political implications and unforeseen consequences for those youth unable to benefit.

[en] EXPERIENCES OF TRANSGENDER YOUTH AND THEIR EDUCATIONAL TRAJECTORIES / [pt] EXPERIÊNCIAS DE JOVENS TRANSGÊNEROS EM SUAS TRAJETÓRIAS ESCOLARES

EVERALDO DE TOLEDO 04 April 2024 (has links)
[en] This research emerges from my fascination with a rarely explored subject: the limited representation of transgender individuals within educational institutions. Our focus centers on transgender adolescents within the educational setting, hailing from diverse sociocultural backgrounds. Our primary goal is to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon, recognizing these individuals as pivotal agents, placing a strong emphasis on their narratives and encountersthroughout their educational journeys. The paucity of discourse surrounding this particular cohort has profoundly driven my commitment to scholarly investigations relating to this domain. This master s dissertation strives, as its principal aspiration,to decipher the experiences of transgender young individuals during their educational odysseys in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in addition to unraveling their outlooks and navigating the hurdles they encounter. In this endeavor, we delve into the quotidian experiences, biases, and stereotypes encountered by these youngindividuals in educational establishments, encompassing elements such as the scarcity of support and the impediments to acquiring knowledge. The project unfolds through three specific aims: (1) Scrutinize the educational passages of transgender adolescents, highlighting facetslinked to retention or attrition and the underlying rationales governing such choices; (2) Probe into how the issue of gender identity among young individuals is addressed within the legal framework and public policies, via a meticulous review of the academic literature, with a distinct concentration on the city of Rio de Janeiro; (3) Undertake comprehensive one-on-one interviews with transgender young individuals, aged between 18 and 29, with particular emphasis on their educational experiences. This qualitative and exploratory exploration provides a platform for these young individuals to convey their personal narratives and contemplations regarding their transgender journey, especially within the framework of their educational expedition. Educational institutions should wield a consequential role in sculpting and nurturing these young individuals since theyinvest a substantial chunk of their existence therein. Thus, our ultimate aspiration isto acquire a more all-encompassing comprehension of the educational trajectories of transgender young individuals, thereby contributing to the body of knowledge concerning the perspectives of these individuals in the context of educational environments.

Outreach : volunteer morivations in Namibian LGBT rights-based organisations

Stander, Willem 02 1900 (has links)
Namibia continues to face an ongoing struggle in protecting the rights and civil liberties of its LGBT population with LGBT rights-based organisations in the country strongly relying upon their volunteers to take advantage of political opportunities and manage multiple visibilities. Despite a growing body of international research into volunteer motivation and the beneficial application of such knowledge in volunteer management strategies, a dearth of literature exists on the motives of volunteers within LGBT rights-based organisations. This study uses data from qualitative interviews with 6 formal volunteers from Namibian LGBT rights-based organisations to explore volunteer motivations. A thematic analysis of the research findings reveal the complex motivations underlying volunteering in these organisations. Volunteer motivations in Namibian LGBT rights-based organisations included: (a) addressing and promoting humanitarian concerns; (b) improved social interaction, integration and support; (c) self-regulatory opportunities for personal enhancement; (d) developing career prospects; and (e) responding to past homophobic incidents. Barriers to volunteering were also identified and included: (a) strained organisational resources; (b) LGBT discrimination; and (c) complacency. For volunteer recruitment and retention strategies to be effective, organisations need to recognise and satisfy volunteers’ motives while also properly training and assisting volunteers in their respective roles. Also, given the local LGBT community’s sense of complacency, Namibian LGBT rights-based organisations would greatly benefit by strategically engaging community members and working to overcome the community’s lack of urgency. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Mitrovich, Arandjel January 2016 (has links)
Denna studie undersöker hur unga transpersoner representeras i media, närmare bestämt inom genren reality tv.
