Transitioning together : narratives of sexuality and intimacy in partners of trans peopleTwist, Jos January 2017 (has links)
Historically trans people have been advised that the gender role transitional process will undoubtedly result in the breakdown of their relationships. Research into trans people's sexuality is growing, yet research into the sexuality of cisgender partners, in the context of their partners' transition, is sparse. This project presents an in-depth narrative analysis of six cisgender women who have been partnered with trans identified individuals. The findings are presented through individual overall impressions of the participants and the collective narratives told. The main story plot that emerged was 'the quest to stay together' which is told through sub plots of identity, the body and invisibility. Further sub plots are offered in regards to the support participants accessed to assist in 'the quest to stay together'. The analysis includes the ways in which narrators drew on, and/or challenged, social discourses of gender and sexuality and also performative aspects of identity. Clinical implications, limitations of the study and future research are also discussed.

Pathologise/De-Pathologise: : Changing Medical Understandings of Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People in BritainPrice, Charles January 2018 (has links)
In recent years there has been increasing awareness of transgender and gender non-conforming people in the UK, and in turn there have been vastly increasing numbers of people seeking medical treatment for their gender dysphoria. This research paper analyses the past medical literature on transgender and gender non-conforming people in the UK, in combination with an interview with a surgeon working in the field of sex reassignment surgery, to examine the historical trends in medical approaches to gender non-conformity. This investigation into changing medical standards and practices is argued to indicate three major trends, a correlation between wider social norms and medical norms, an increasing de-pathologisation of gender non-conformity and an increasing focus on individualism over society. These trends are then extended forward and used to imagine possible future changes in the medical treatments of transgender and gender non-conforming people in the UK, such as an increasing focus on an informed consent model and a problematising of the boundaries between “transgender” medical procedures and other forms of bodily modifications. This paper aims to contribute to the current body of work in feminist science studies focusing on gendered aspects of medical practices, and also aims to continue the work of Donna Haraway and others in deconstructing rigid bodily categories.

The transsexual experience is a highlighted theme in the current academic context, being portrayed as a complex phenomenon, which presupposes an incompatibility between gender and biological sex. By questioning the binary sex/gender model, it is allowed to question the scientific speeches wrapped in body naturalization presumptions. Disability, out of rehabilitative model, would represent, per se, a transgressions of the “anatomic order”, even if recognized by the biomedical model as the result of a flaw, either congenital or acquired, that will affect the “normal” functioning of the body or of some of its parts. The perception of both bodies acquire new outlining when facing the reading of Judith Butler, for whom the place of pathologization and abjection conferred to these experiences are the result of speech practices that establish power relations that act upon the bodies. Reflecting upon the multiple possibilities of experiences, understood on the basis of feminine, and considering the subordinate position conferred to these bodies in the face of the hegemonic rules, this work aims to create a space of narrative and analysis for an experience that has been little explored academically: the subjective experience of disabled trans women. Focusing, specially, on the disability studies and its possible interlocutions with the Queer theory as theoretical basis, interviews with three disabled trans women were made, being them: two physically disabled women and a sensorial disabled one. For data collection, we made use of the Thematic Oral History method (Meihy, 1996).The analyses of the narratives were organized according to the Discursive Textual Analysis, highlighting the categories that are prominent in the speech, constituting 3 analysis axes: (1) Transit as transgression: from walking difficulties to the itinerant genre. (2) The eyes as a source of scorn, recognition, and desire. (3) The woman as power. This research has a qualitative and exploratory nature, intending to expand and foment new works and discussions regarding the notions of femininity and sexuality from the interface between transgender subjectivity and disability

Collocates of trans, transgender(s) and transexual(s) in British Newspapers: A Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse AnalysisTörmä, Kajsa January 2018 (has links)
Through their coverage in the mass media transgender people and the trans rights movement have only recently stepped into the public eye. Because this emergence is so recent, it has not been widely studied within the field of linguistics. This thesis aims to explore the representation of transgender people in newspapers using an approach informed by corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis. Using collocation and concordance line analysis it identifies and discusses what semantic prosodies exist surrounding transgender people in The Daily Mail and The Guardian during 2015–2017. Many different semantic prosodies were found, and most of them were neither clearly negative nor positive towards transgender people. The prosodies were found to sometimes overlap and reinforce each other, and dominant news stories surrounding transgender people seemed to have great staying power. The overall conclusion is that transgender language in newspapers is still in its formative years and that additional research in this field is necessary. /
2018-08-21

Translating gender: Exploring the effect of communicative barriers on trans identityWood, Caitlin 01 August 2015 (has links)
Despite the recent attention to the LGBT community in the mainstream media as well as psychological research, few resources have been channeled toward the “T” in this acronym. The trans community, and gender diversity in general, have been an afterthought in research claiming to study gender and sexuality. Research on sexual minorities has been assumed to capture the experiences of this population, despite its quite distinct needs and experiences, as well as alarmingly high rates of violence and suicide. This project is a qualitative analysis of the processes and strategies trans and gender non-conforming individuals use to communicate their identity to others, and how they address barriers they face in their everyday lives. Participation was open to all trans or gender non-conforming individuals. Five individuals who identified as trans or genderqueer volunteered to participate in individual semi-structured interviews about their experiences in communicating their gender identity to others. All participants were White university students at a local mid-sized university in a rural Midwestern setting. Interviews were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), using the process outlined by Smith and Osborn (2008). Six themes in total were pulled from the data: (1) Gender identity, (2) Barriers to communication, (3) Strategic responses, (4) Individual impacts, (5) Community politics, and (6) Coping. These results emphasized the complexity and irreducibility of trans individuals’ daily lives, demonstrating simultaneously the tremendous harm of transphobic discrimination and the strength and insight of these individuals into their own experiences. Findings supported the use of the Minority Stress Model (Meyer, 1995) in the trans population and further underscored the need for continued research on all trans individuals’ experiences, especially those who identify as non-binary, trans people of color, and trans women.

: En fallstudie om förskollärares förhållningssätt gällande genusarbete på förskolan i Sverige och Finland / Now we no longer have princess dresses fine! : A case study of preschool teachers' attitudes regarding existing gender work within the preschool system in Sweden and FinlandMiettinen, Hanna January 2018 (has links)
Gender in early childhood education is currently a discussed topic in the news and the subject also draws a lot of attention in the media in general. Different approaches to gender in preschools have brought both criticism and praise among custodians preschool teachers and within the community. Several kindergartens in Sweden have an explicit focus on gender work and some of them are also LBTQ-certified. The aim of this study is to investigate teachers’ attitudes to current gender work in preschools and to empirically examine how different perspectives on gender work in Sweden and Finland interact in preschools. The aim is also to discover alternative ways to work with gender and equality within a preschool framework. The study is based on semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. I have compared the Swedish preschool curriculum with the Finnish equivalent to get the views of the political governing documents that differ regarding gender and gender equality work in these two countries. (”Varhaiskasvatuksen suunnitelman perusteet” translated as "The fundamental features/basics of the plan for early childhood education", Finlands national curriculum). The theoretical framework used in the study is a gender perspective approach. The study points out that preschool teachers’ tensions differ to some degree, depending on the preschool and depending on preschool teachers' education, own values and enthusiasm for the subject. The study lifts the reflection about it as important. The study shows that preschool teachers in Sweden are aware of work with gender, but interprets the way to implement these goals through the curriculum objectives in a multifaceted way. Both the Finnish national curriculum and the Helsinki City applied version of the national curriculum ("Foundations of early childhood education") lift up many important learning objectives, but do not specifically raise transgender work or work against traditional gender patterns. The qualitative interviews conducted in Finland present highlights that a discussion debate about gender work is ongoing in the country where their curriculum is to be renewed by the year 2017. The majority of the preschool teachers in both my interviews and questionnaires, in Sweden and Finland, pointed out that gender work has changed through the past decade. The majority of the preschool teachers also pointed seeing the individual, rather than the gender, as the most important in their work. A special feature of my study gives indication that a general discourse shift from compensatory pedagogic to norm critical pedagogy has taken place. Technique in activities was raised as a non-gender-coded material for children and digital tools in preschool as an entrance for more men in the teacher profession. What also has been found in my study is that gender is defined mainly depending on the context and that perverted approaches take time to change. My conclusion is that preschool teachers’ intention in my study, is not to limit children based on their gender. Their main intention and challenge is to continue offer children a multi-faceted activity based on children's interests and according to curriculum.

Transsexualism is characterized by the irreversible desire to live and be accepted as belonging to the opposite sex to its biological sex. Male transsexuals (female to male) chronically use androgenic hormones to promote changes in secondary sexual characteristics compatible with gender identity, corresponding to cross-sex hormone therapy. Testosterone is the main hormone used in cross-hormone therapy in this population. Although it is considered safe, when used in adequate doses, few studies are available in the literature regarding the effects of testosterone in this specific population, in addition to including small sample sizes. Thus, the objectives of this dissertation were to systematically review the literature regarding the effects of testosterone treatment on the clinical, metabolic, hematological, lipid and hepatic profile of male transsexual individuals. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, studies were published until May 2016 in the Medline (PUBMED) and EMBASE databases. We included studies that reported interventions with any dose of testosterone and that presented data comparing clinical and metabolic variables before and after treatment For the meta-analysis, only articles that had analyzed the effects of treatment with testosterone undecanoate for 12 months were included. In this way, the effect size was calculated as change in 12 months in relation to the baseline mean value. Search resulted in 391 potentially eligible articles. Of these, 13 met the eligibility criteria and were included in the systematic review. Three were eligible for the meta-analysis. The quality of these studies according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale scale was good. Treatment with testosterone undecanoate promoted a significant increase in serum testosterone levels (effect size 6.18, 95% CI: 4.59 to 7.76), hematocrit (4.80, 95% CI: 4.06 to 5.54), hemoglobin (1.54, 95%: 1.10 to 1.98), and systolic pressure (4.74, 95% CI: 2.15 to 7.33). In conclusion, the results of this work suggest that testosterone undecanoate treatment is effective and although it significantly increases hematocrit, hemoglobin and systolic pressure in the first year of treatment of transgender men, these findings are clinically acceptable, evidencing the safety of this treatment.

Corpos (trans)formados no cinemaSilva, Caio Ramos da January 2018 (has links)
The present research seeks to undertake a mapping of cinematographic productions, national and international, that deal with transgender characters. From this procedure, we observe the regularities that emerged from this set of productions. We aim to trace a path that inscribes this effort in a micropolitical plan, since it critically questions the communicational and discursive practices of hegemonic cinema. To do so, we explore approximations and tensions provoked by queer studies, considering here it is this set of notions that best account for thinking the trans condition as a displacement that imposes itself on the male / female binary system and, as a consequence, on the sex / gender system . This course, conducted even under a discursive / Foucaultian bias, entails a deep questioning of what constitutes the human being when interrogating biopowers, the limits of the body and the regimes of truth that produce it. Thus, this research is guided by the following question: how are the discourses that produce and express trans bodies in cinema? We start from the analysis of the films Boys Don’t Cry (1999), Tomboy (2011), In a Year of 13 Moons (1978), Tiresia (2003), Wild Side (2004), Vera (1987), Tangerine (2015) and Paris is Burning (1991) to examine observed regularities, assuming that it is possible to interrogate the conditions of possibility of new ways of expressing transgender experiences, in order to configure significant escape lines for audiovisuals.

In view of the recent discussions about gender and sex diversity in Brazil, transsexualities have been the focus of academic development and a subject in the media. In spite of still being placed as abject, their conjugalities are an example of a displacement. The goal was to comprehend what are the constitutional processes of this transsexual conjugalities and how they are lived within these relationships. In order to come closer of these processes, this Thesis is divided in four articles. In the first one, the transsexuality concept is dissertated in four scientific knowledge areas: biology, medicine, psychoanalyses and social sciences. The concept is explained from issues regarding anatomy, genetics, brain differences, phallic-oedipal theory, psychopathology, sex as a discursive concept, gender as performative and as a diversity expression in opposition with the heteronorm. In the second article, a systematic review was done in relation to the transsexual conjugalities theme based on empirical evidence. Conjugal aspects were divided into the following categories: sexual activity, arousal and orientation; couples’ sexual challenges; gender roles and couples’ relationship challenges. There was an increase in the complexity of the conceptualization of this conjugal diversity. In the third article, the same theme was only revised in Brazilian publications, and the travestilidades theme was added. The results of the papers found show a variety of forms to denominate these partnerships, with an apparent conjugal emotional fusion that works as a maintainer the participants’ gender identities. However, there are creative responses that allow an interruption in the halo effect between gender identity and sexual desire and lead to identity autonomy and to pleasure. In the last article, three interviews were made with transsexual man and women and their cisgender partners. They were analyzed using the Gender Studies (Queer and post-structuralism studies). The results show that the transsexual conjugalities described are another territory that put into tension and defy gender norms and make flexible outcomes possible, not directed to any of the heteronorm extremes. This specific configuration may destabilize this tension and enable alternative directions to the binary logic mainly in the fields of sexual performativities, household tasks sharing and the relationship with family of origins.
