Young Australian Women with Breast Cancer: Perspectives of their Illness ExperiencesConnell, Shirley Elizabeth January 2005 (has links)
Young women with breast cancer have been found to experience their disease more negatively and more intensely than their older counterparts. However 'young' is not uniformly defined within the literature. Studies have reported on a wide range of ages considered to be 'young', such as samples simply divided by menopausal status or other researcher-defined parameters. For the purpose of this study, young women with breast cancer were defined as those diagnosed at 40 years of age or younger. The overarching aim of the study was to explore the problems faced by this group of young women using qualitative methodology, guided by constructionist epistemology, and grounded in symbolic interactionism and social constructionism. The study was conducted longitudinally, with data collected three times over a 12-18 month period using one-to-one in-depth semi-structured interviews. Baseline data were collected in the first phase of the study (n=35). A sub-group of participants (n=13) were chosen to be followed twice more approximately six months apart, which made up the next two phases. Themes derived from the literature guided the first phase of the study, data collection and analysis. Data analysis was performed after each data collection phase, with findings informing the next phase/s of the study. Thematic and content analysis were utilized in regards to the analysis of the first phase of the study, providing a framework identifying the most pressing concerns, such as those centred around children and partners, emotional aspects and negative physical consequences of treatment. Interrelationships between these themes were apparent. Findings suggest that the emotional support needs of this group of young women remains a challenge. Basic analytical principles of data reduction, data display and drawing conclusions guided the following phases of the analysis. NUD*IST (N6) software was utilized to help undertake in-depth analysis of all follow-up data. The literature concentrates on infertility as a concern for young women with breast cancer, however the study found that fertility per se was a concern for this group of women. Issues of maintained and regained fertility were reported, i.e., concerns surrounding suitable, safe and reliable contraception, pregnancy and breastfeeding after breast cancer. Over time, perceptions of fertility changed. Decisions related to unplanned pregnancies and breastfeeding were particularly onerous. The study also provided other insights into the participants' lives. Body image is suggested to be of greater concern for younger women with breast cancer than their older counterparts. Perceptions of breast symbolism, societal and personal, were explored, as were perceptions of the external portrayal of their bodies. In addition, the participants reported how their experience of breast cancer differed from that of older women with breast cancer, e.g., to be and dress more sexually. Theories and notions of social constructionism and the social construction of the body helped explain the participants' experiences. The women were acutely aware of the sexual importance society placed on women's breasts. Social norms and expectations and cultural trends, that is the youth and beauty culture, were found to greatly influence the participants' perceptions and hence decisions made. Prosthesis use and breast reconstructive surgery were viewed as normalising efforts undertaken by participants to reduce stigma related to breast loss/disfigurement and to enhance body image. The findings from this study provide a greater understanding of the issues, concerns and experiences of young women with breast cancer and provide information that could be utilized in the redesign of educational/information resources to provide these women with relevant information. Currently available support services may also benefit from these findings as greater understanding of these women's experiences may facilitate and promote the provision of more age-appropriate support for young women with breast cancer diagnosed in the future.

Chronic heart failure beyond city limits: an analysis of the distribution, management and information technology solutions for people with chronic heart failure in rural and remote AustraliaClark, Robyn A January 2007 (has links)
Chronic heart failure (CHF) is defined as a complex clinical syndrome that is frequently, but not exclusively, characterised by objective evidence of an underlying structural abnormality or cardiac dysfunction. CHF affects up to 3% of the adult population and this rate is consistent throughout the developed world. In spite of the proven efficacy of treatments, there is a common theme of low implementation rates for recommended therapeutic guidelines. In Australia, where access to specialist CHF management is limited, the burden of care, for the 40% of CHF patients living outside capital cities falls predominantly onto community-based general practitioners (GPs). Unfortunately, there are diminishing numbers of GPs in rural and remote regions and this has created an apparent dual deficit in terms of equitable access to primary and specialist care for the CHF population living in these areas. The purpose of this research was to determine, in a series of themed studies, the population distribution, management and potential information technology solutions for CHF in rural and remote Australia. Appropriate methods were utilised for each study and included epidemiological studies, a quantitative analysis of a large practice audit, geo-mapping, a systematic review, a case study review and a qualitative analysis of participant feedback and clinical notes.

International tourism and economic development: a South African perspectiveRoussot, Elizabeth Wambach 30 June 2005 (has links)
Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world. Since the 1980s the role of tourism as a means of achieving the objectives of economic development has received prominence within the sustainable development paradigm. This dissertation examines the role of international tourism in achieving the objectives of economic development in terms of its impact on key social and economic variables, such as the balance of payments, inflation, employment and the social fabric of host communities. It also examines the constraints facing international tourism, such as the effect of perceptions on tourism flows and the powerful position of multinationals in influencing the tourist decision-making process. The success of the international tourism industry in selected countries is assessed and the relative position of the South African tourist offering is highlighted in an attempt to draw lessons for the future development of the industry in South Africa. / Economics / M. The ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution fundamentally changes the world of work. Recent technological innovations have a significant impact on all areas of the national economy and on our everyday life. This diploma thesis deals with these impacts on the labour market in connection with the advancing trend of automation and digitization of work. Discussion on the future development of the revolution is in the sphere of expertise highly polarized. Versions that represent a negative view of the issue include image of massive job replacement, lack of talent and the rise of social inequality. On the other hand, there are concepts that emphasize the positive impact on the labour market. The aim of this diploma thesis is to classify the trends in the working relations through the comparison of these two opinion streams and the systematic arrangement of the arguments presented by them. The final part addresses the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the Czech Republic. KEY WORDS the Fourth Industrial Revolution, automation, digitization, future of work, labour market, flexibility at work, new trends in employment

Previous issue date: 2017-02-10 / This work aims to test if the use of Google Trends as an exogenous variable improves the prediction of the monthly data for Brazilian Formal Job Creation (CAGED) compared to a model that uses only the lags themselves. For the selection of the model was used the algorithm Autometrics and for model comparison the Model Confidence Set. In addition, the model that uses Google Trends data will be compared with some market analyst’s forecasts. The results show that the model the uses the Google data as an exogenous variable is superior to the model that only uses the lag itself. However, this model was not able to overcome the market analysts. Contesting the efficient market hypothesis for the Chicago Board of Trade corn futures contract through the application of a derivative methodologyRossouw, Werner 11 1900 (has links)
Corn production is scattered geographically over various continents, but most of it is grown
in the United States. As such, the world price of corn futures contracts is largely dominated
by North American corn prices as traded on the Chicago Board of Trade. In recent years,
this market has been characterised by an increase in price volatility and magnitude of price
movement as a result of decreasing stock levels. The development and implementation of
an effective and successful derivative price risk management strategy based on the
Chicago Board of Trade corn futures contract will therefore be of inestimable value to
market stakeholders worldwide.
The research focused on the efficient market hypothesis and the possibility of contesting
this phenomenon through an application of a derivative price risk management
methodology. The methodology is based on a combination of an analysis of market trends
and technical oscillators with the objective of generating returns superior to that of a
market benchmark.
The study found that market participants are currently unable to exploit price movement in
a manner which results in returns that contest the notion of efficient markets. The
methodology proposed, however, does allow the user to consistently achieve returns
superior to that of a predetermined market benchmark. The benchmark price for the
purposes of this study was the average price offered by the market over the contract
lifetime, and such, the efficient market hypothesis was successfully contested. / Business Management / D. Com. (Business Management)

A methodology for integrating legacy systems with the client/server environmentRedelinghuys, Melinda 06 1900 (has links)
The research is conducted in the area of software methodologies with the emphasis on the integration of legacy systems with the client/server environment. The investigation starts with identifying the characteristics of legacy systems in order to determine the features and technical characteristics required of an integration methodology. A number of existing methodologies are evaluated with respect to their features and technical characteristics in order to derive a synthesis for a generic methodology. This evaluation yields the meta primitives of a generic
methodology. The revised spiral model (Boehm,1986; DuPlessis & Vander Wah,1992) is customised to
arrive at a software process model which provides a framework for the integration of legacy systems
with the client/server environment. The integration methodology is based on this process model. / Computing / M. Sc. (Information Systems)
