So that, it seeks comprehending the concept of the Master Plan in Brazil, emphasizing, in each studied period, the new standards and approaches that were being introduced in its onstitution. This work also analyses the meaning and approach of the term sustentability , the precedings that gave the basis for its definition, as well as on its reverberation on the urban mean and, specially, in the society that lives in this environment. Finally, it seeks inquiring on the Master Plan of São Paulo, which treatment given to the environmental questions and what actions were recommended in order to improve the environmental sustentability of this town. / Esta dissertação busca, em síntese, encontrar nas diretrizes do Plano Diretor do Município de São Paulo, peculiaridades que possam ser revertidas em ações práticas para a implementação da sustentabilidade ambiental do meio urbano. Para tanto, procura entender o conceito de Plano Diretor no Brasil, destacando, em cada período estudado, os novos parâmetros e abordagens que foram sendo introduzidos em sua constituição. Analisam-se, também, o significado e abrangência do termo sustentabilidade , os antecedentes que embasaram sua definição, assim como seu rebatimento no meio urbano e, principalmente, na sociedade que vive nesse ambiente. Por fim, procura-se averiguar nos Planos Diretores do Município de São Paulo, qual o tratamento dado às questões ambientais e que ações foram propostas em benefício da sustentabilidade ambiental do município.
