A history, evolution and application of form-based codesGowdy, Lauren M. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Regional and Community Planning / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / John W. Keller / Form-based codes are gaining in popularity and provide a much needed and adequate alternative to more commonly used zoning regulations. Analysis shows the inadequacies and negative consequences that zoning regulations have created over the past 100 years of use within the United States. The focus being that traditional zoning regulations create undesired and unsustainable communities. A progression of form-based codes from their origins to the use of form-based codes today shows how they can be used to influence and shape the built environment. Further examination of the evolution of form-based codes reveals the guiding principles and elements of more modern codes. When compared to traditional zoning regulations, form-based codes can assist in designing a better quality built environment by creating more conscious, significant and sustainable places and spaces within our communities. By looking at current ways in which form-based codes are implemented we can begin to define best management practices and speculate on the future of form-based codes.

STRAIGHT TIME AND SCANDAL: TRAVESTI URBAN POLITICS IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZILWoodward, Christine L. 01 January 2016 (has links)
São Paulo, Brazil is currently pursuing a project of creative urbanism. Though city rhetoric insists this project is rooted in tolerance of sexual diversity, I suggest that city policy effectively perpetuates normative conceptions of family and respectability. Using data gathered through a series of qualitative interviews with transgender and travesti individuals living in São Paulo, I argue that the straight time of São Paulo’s creative urbanism generates exclusionary temporalities and spatialities in the city that render travestis out of time and out of place. Furthermore, I argue that travestis use their capacity to enact shame through scandals to generate temporalities and spatialities of their own, ones not aligned with the reproductive, progressive futurity of straight time. In doing so, travestis participate in their own kind of creative urbanism and provide an affective challenge to the hetero- and homonormativity of São Paulo’s creative urban project. Building on recent scholarship in queer urbanism and affect, this thesis adds to critical efforts to understand how creative urbanism sexualizes space and time in contexts outside of EuroAmerica and how a queer theoretical approach contributes to critiques of progressive modernity.

Mapping Mueller : a post occupancy evaluation of transportation choices in a new urbanist community in Austin, TexasTepper, Rachel Cathryn 03 October 2014 (has links)
The 711-acre Mueller development is located just three miles northeast of downtown on the former site of the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport. Planned as one of Austin’s major transit-oriented New Urbanist developments, Mueller contains a pattern of pedestrian and bike friendly streets to encourage a range of transportation options for residents and visitors. Mueller is 30% complete and provides housing and jobs to over 3000 residents and 3000 employees. This professional report seeks to understand how current residents, employees, and visitors use the bike lanes, sidewalks, and roads in the Mueller community. To evaluate the transportation infrastructure, the author designed and coded a custom Google Maps survey that asked residents to draw common routes, points of interest, and points of concern related to their transportation choices. Field observations were conducted to verify and triangulate the information reported in the online survey. This study investigates whether the transportation principles for the development are or are not achieved by comparing the expressed principles of the development with the actual behavior reported and exhibited by frequent users. / text

Visible features : AustinHart, Jonas Spencer 09 October 2014 (has links)
This report is a summary of my work and research during my three years at The University of Texas at Austin. I engage the city's impressive urban parks and new urbanist developments through my own practice of descriptive and interpretive landscape painting. Through continuous exploration of the city, research into the history of landscape painting and into the strategies of modern landscape architecture, I have learned to see more clearly the role that the visual history of depicted landscape plays in contemporary practices of landscape design and construction. This has reinforced my interest in understanding how painting as a medium plays a role in our cultural understandings of how landscapes should look and act. By experimenting with new formats and materials I continue to adapt my work to articulate a new, dynamic understanding of landscape in flux and inextricable from its human inhabitants. / text

Nature Routines of Children as Leverage Point for Sustainable Social-Ecological Urbanism : Connecting childhood and biosphere to design sustainable civilizations in the human habitatGiusti, Matteo January 2016 (has links)
Strong sustainability requires enhanced knowledge and understanding of complex social-ecological interactions, but it also implies a ‘novel’ conceptualization of the relationship between humans and nature, one in which individuals perceive themselves as embedded members of the Biosphere. The aim of this Licentiate thesis is to investigate the validity of a strategy that is centered on designing the urban green infrastructure to nurture such human-nature relationship in children’s attitudes. The research is framed by spatial cognition, conservation psychology, and social-ecological sustainability and it focuses on the validity of this strategy. Hence, the Licentiate analyzes how reoccurring experiences of nature that are situated in the everyday habitat (i.e. nature routines) affect personal human-nature attitudes and how these can be implemented as leverage points to change social-ecological systems using sustainable urbanism. Paper 1 tests the assumed link between the nature routines in Stockholm and preschool children’s development of cognitive and emotional affinity to nature. The results show that nature-rich routines over a period of four years are significantly correlated with the strength of preschooler’s affinity with nature. Paper 2 uses a mixed methods approach to evaluate changes in Connection To Nature (CTN) in 10 years olds who partake in a project of nature conservation. The results of Paper 2 show that there is an evaluative gap between theory and practice in connecting children with nature that impedes the evaluation of how children’s CTN changes over short periods of time and that impedes the creation of an evaluative framework for nature experiences. Paper 3 considers these empirical results in theorizing an approach to sustainable urban design based on social-ecological sustainability that includes CTN. In order to overcome existing limitations Paper 3 presents the concept of cognitive affordances as a theoretical tool to embed cognitive and emotional attitudes towards nature into the design of urban spaces. All combined these papers provide valid evidence that nature routines in cities, especially for children, can be a significant leverage point to enable future sustainable civilizations.

Thus, with the starting point a vast cache of photographs and cards, collected over a long period in Santiago city-center, the issue involves comprehending the image/context as a whole, a task that, after a case-by-case examination, will allow us to analyze the image as an integral part of its location. The goal, therefore, is the observation of the role of images in the construction of the urban environment and as fundamental components of our everyday surroundings. In this way, various aspects come to the fore throughout the process: the distribution of images relative to the power of the forces they represent reveals, in the whole, the spatial activities of the social group; the way in which the image transforms the space and the space in turn redefines the image; the relationship between image and architecture; between the dynamics of the image and the urban dynamics; and, lastly, the impact of new technologies on the urban landscape. In summation, throughout our research we have followed the progressive existence of location-specific imagery as an object in its own right and an essential element that will shape the visual landscape of cities in the 21st century
