Rejecting the Page, Inciting Visuality: Staging 'Woyzeck' in a Mediatized Culture

Conway, Elisha 14 January 2013 (has links)
The influence of new media on theatrical practice over the past fifty years has spurred a movement towards theatrical forms which are increasingly organized around the sensory elements of performance. This change is most noticeable in the visual approaches to theatre, and it has produced what I have labeled a theatre of visuality. This thesis argues that the tendencies for visualization found in visual media have extensively marked the performance strategies of contemporary theatre practice, resulting in a shift away from the logocentric dramatic text and towards theatre performance organized around the visual. Looking at four contemporary productions of Georg Buchner’s Woyzeck –Thomas Ostermeier’s Woyzeck (2005), Vesturport’s Woyzeck (2005), Robert Wilson’s Woyzeck (2000), and Josef Nadj’s Woyzeck ou l’Ébauche du Vertige (1994)– this thesis produces a preliminary typology of four distinct visualities/theatrical forms which make up the theatre of visuality: hyperrealism, synesthesia, superficiality, and visual narration. This thesis contributes to the conceptualization and understanding of postdramatic theatre by linking the theatre’s rejection of the text to the increased centrality of the visual in performance, and by tracing these shifts to the influence of visual media.

Optimization algorithms for video service delivery

ABOUSABEA, Emad Mohamed Abd Elrahman 12 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to provide optimization algorithms for accessing video services either in unmanaged or managed ways. We study recent statistics about unmanaged video services like YouTube and propose suitable optimization techniques that could enhance files accessing and reduce their access costs. Moreover, this cost analysis plays an important role in decision making about video files caching and hosting periods on the servers. Under managed video services called IPTV, we conducted experiments for an open-IPTV collaborative architecture between different operators. This model is analyzed in terms of CAPEX and OPEX costs inside the domestic sphere. Moreover, we introduced a dynamic way for optimizing the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) for multicast IPTV service. In nomadic access, the static trees could be unable to provide the service in an efficient manner as the utilization of bandwidth increases towards the streaming points (roots of topologies). Finally, we study reliable security measures in video streaming based on hash chain methodology and propose a new algorithm. Then, we conduct comparisons between different ways used in achieving reliability of hash chains based on generic classifications

Design Patterns und CSCL-Scripts für hypervideo-basierte Lernumgebungen

Seidel, Niels 10 October 2014 (has links) (PDF)

The design and implementation of a security and containment platform for peer-to-peer media distribution / Die ontwerp en implimentasie van ’n sekure en begeslote platvorm vir portuurnetwerk mediaverspreiding

Storey, Quiran 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The way in which people consume video is changing with the adoption of new technologies such as tablet computers and smart televisions. These new technologies, along with the Internet, are moving video distribution away from satellite and terrestrial broadcast to distribution over the Internet. Services online now offer the same content that originally was only available on satellite broadcast television. However, these services are only viable in countries with high speed, inexpensive Internet bandwidth. The need therefore exists for alternative services to deliver content in countries where bandwidth is still expensive and slow. These include many of the developing nations of Africa. In this thesis we design and develop a video distribution platform that relies on peer-to-peer networking to deliver high quality video content. We use an existing video streaming peer-to-peer protocol as the primary distribution mechanism, but allow users to share video over other protocols and services. These can include BitTorrent, DC++ and users sharing hard drives with one another. In order to protect the video content, we design and implement a security scheme that prevents users from pirating video content, while allowing easy distribution of video data. The core of the security scheme requires a low bandwidth Internet connection to a server that streams keys to unlock the video content. The project also includes the development of a custom video player application to integrate with the security scheme. The platform is not limited to, but is aimed at high speed local area networks where bandwidth is free. In order for the platform to support feasible business models, we provision additional services, such as video cataloging and search, video usage monitoring and platform administration. The thesis includes a literature study on techniques and solutions to secure video entertainment, specifically in a peer-to-peer environment.

No. of bitstreams: 1 AlbaSBL_DISSERT.pdf: 4454568 bytes, checksum: 25c4881845467354b0805f55975884ef (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-03-30 / Nowadays several electronics devices support digital videos. Some examples of these devices are cellphones, digital cameras, video cameras and digital televisions. However, raw videos present a huge amount of data, millions of bits, for their representation as the way they were captured. To store them in its primary form it would be necessary a huge amount of disk space and a huge bandwidth to allow the transmission of these data. The video compression becomes essential to make possible information storage and transmission. Motion Estimation is a technique used in the video coder that explores the temporal redundancy present in video sequences to reduce the amount of data necessary to represent the information. This work presents a hardware architecture of a motion estimation module for high resolution videos according to H.264/AVC standard. The H.264/AVC is the most advanced video coder standard, with several new features which allow it to achieve high compression rates. The architecture presented in this work was developed to provide a high data reuse. The data reuse schema adopted reduces the bandwidth required to execute motion estimation. The motion estimation is the task responsible for the largest share of the gains obtained with the H.264/AVC standard so this module is essential for final video coder performance. This work is included in Rede H.264 project which aims to develop Brazilian technology for Brazilian System of Digital Television / Diversos aparelhos eletr?nicos atuais d?o suporte ? utiliza??o de v?deos digitais: celulares, c?meras fotogr?ficas, filmadoras e TVs digitais s?o alguns exemplos.

Calloni, Gilberto José January 2010 (has links)
This work proposes an alternative introduction of 8th grade Physics school contents through the study of Kinematics concepts present, e.g., in the students' daily sporting and leisure activities, in order to make these concepts more attractive and motivating to them. The situations have been registered in the schoolyard and gymnasium by the students themselves using a digital camera. The videoclips were then analyzed using an image analysis software (Tracker) in the school's computer laboratory. The subjects on the videoclips were selected among students' suggestions and assisted by the Science class teacher together with the author. The proposal has been carried out in Colégio São José, of Caxias do Sul, RS, with five different groups of 8th graders during Science classes, from September to November of 2008, these activities being alternated with regular classes. All material developed and used in the proposal was made available, during its application, on the School's Webpage. The planning and execution of this proposal are oriented along the social interaction theory of Lev Vygotsky. This choice is mainly motivated by the goal of promoting collaborative students work, intermediated by the teachers, providing and stimulating the taste for learning. The students evaluated the work by its conclusion through an opinion questionnaire. According to the students' answers to the questionnaire, when their daily activities were introduced in the Physics classes making use of available technology through electronic and computer devices, the Physics learning was rendered more interesting and motivating. The instructional material produced during the project application together with an information guide orienting other 8th grade Science teachers on its application will be published in the series “Hipermídias de Apoio ao Professor de Física”, where aims and methodology will also be described.
