A translation and historical commentary on book one and book two of the Historia of Georgi?s Pachymer?s

Cassidy, Nathan John January 2004 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] My focus has been twofold. On the one hand I have highlighted and elucidated the events which Pachymerēs narrates, glossing with prosopographical and topological notes the people, places and things mentioned in the text, and explaining other esoteric details, such as the range of many and varied, ornate Byzantine court honorifics. On the other hand I have made a critical comparison between Pachymerēs and the other important sources for the period, Greek, Western, and Eastern, to provide explanations for differences in the various narratives, to suggest which source is the more accurate for any given event, and to fill up the narrative ‘gaps’ of Gomme .... I must stress that both by training and inclination I am an historian, not a philologist, so the commentary will be historical rather than philological. This is despite the importance Pachymerēs himself places in the clever use of language and his frequent use of allusions to and quotes from other works, Classical, Byzantine or biblical. The question of mimēsis, how much Pachymerēs is directly trying to imitate or incorporate older texts, has received limited attention, and only where Pachymerēs’ use of the earlier text is vital to the understanding of his own work. Similarly, questions of language, and the way in which Pachymerēs uses it, have not been explored except in those instances where it directly affects the historical point our author is making. Pachymerēs’ Historia is an important source for a pivotal period in Byzantine Imperial history, and many scholars have not used it as efficiently as they could due to the denseness of his prose and his “tortuous syntax” (Bartusis 1992:55) ...

Tre Kungligheter, Två kyrkor : En studie om hur Henry VIII, Mary I & Elizabeth I använde religion för mer makt.

Brodin, David January 2022 (has links)

Safety of intramuscular COVID-19 vaccination in patients with haemophilia

Tiede, Andreas, Leise, Hendrik, Horneff, Silvia, Oldenburg, Johannes, Halimeh, Susan, Heller, Christine, Königs, Christoph, Holstein, Katharina, Pfrepper, Christian 04 January 2024 (has links)
Background: Guidelines recommend that patients with haemophilia should preferably receive vaccination subcutaneously. COVID-19 and other vaccines, however, are only licenced for intramuscular application. Aims: To assess the safety of intramuscular COVID-19 vaccination in patients living with haemophilia. Methods: Part A of this prospective observational study enrolled consecutive patients with haemophilia A (HA) and B (HB) of all ages and severities and assessed injection site bleeding and other complications within 30 days of vaccination. Part B enrolled patients providing informed consent for detailed data collection including medication and prophylaxis around the time of vaccination. Logistic regression was performed to assess potential risk factors for bleeding. Results: Four hundred and sixty-one patients were enrolled into part A. The primary endpoint injection site bleeding occurred in seven patients (1.5%, 95% confidence interval .7–3.1%). Comprehensive analysis of 214 patients (404 vaccinations, part B) revealed that 97% of patients with severe haemophilia had prophylaxis before vaccination, either as part of their routine prophylaxis or using additional doses. 56% and 30% of patients with moderate and mild haemophilia, respectively, received prophylaxis before vaccination. Among the seven bleeds recorded, three occurred when intramuscular vaccination was done without prophylaxis (odds ratio 12). Conclusions: This is the first prospective study reporting on the safety of intramuscular vaccination in haemophilia. The rate of injection site bleeding was low in mild haemophilia, and in moderate and severe haemophilia if patients received factor prophylaxis.

Nicolas, Patrice 05 1900 (has links)
Who was "Jacotin"? What mysteries of his biography remain? What was his contribution to the musical panorama of the sixteenth century? And why do we know so little about a figure (or figures) whose work – for the most part stylish and elegant – seem to have encountered considerable success in his time? At present, the oeuvre attributed to "Jacotin" is almost completely forgotten and the identity of the composer(s) to whom we owe it is still the subject of speculations among scholars. Thus, these compositions have never received the attention they deserve. The chansons were not edited in modern notation until 2004 ; the Latin works have not yet been the subject of a critical edition, nor of a study. More generally, the compositions attributed to "Jacotin" have not been exhaustively studied. Yet, they have much to teach us about the stylistic differences and interactions between France, the Netherlands and Italy during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as the potential candidates for the title of composer(s) were employed in Paris, Antwerp, Naples, Ferrara, Rome and Milan. The Latin works ascribed to "Jacotin" also reflect their author(s) numerous activities and services, as some motets (Beati omnes qui timent Dominum, Interveniat pro rege nostro and Michael Archangele, notably) were possibly part of ceremonies that took place at the royal court of England under the reign of Henry VIII (1491-1547, r. 1509-1547), as well as that of France under the reigns of Louis XII (1462-1515, r. 1498-1515) and François I (1494-1547, r. 1515-1547). The motets of "Jacotin" constitute therefore essential links in the history of the genre, both in France and, more generally, in Europe. This study attempts first to solve the identity problem that has been affecting "Jacotin" for over two centuries. Thus, the first part is devoted to the prosopography of Renaissance singers clearly identified under this nickname. In conjunction with the examination of the musical sources and the study of their patterns of diffusion, the analysis of the Latin works then allows their attribution to four different authors, namely: Jacques de Nieuport (c. 1435-c. 1475), Jacques Frontin (c. 1450/55-?1519), Jacques Godebrye (c. 1460-1529), and Jacques Lebel (c. 1494-c. 1556). In a second step, this study proposes for the first time a critical edition of the Latin works attributed to "Jacotin", which complete the critical edition of his chansons published by Frank Dobbins in 2004. As a result, the complete work preserved under this nickname is finally available in modern notation, for both performers and scholars.

Early Jewish textual culture and the New Testament : the reuse of Zechariah 1-8 in the book of Revelation

Allen, Garrick V. January 2015 (has links)
The text of the book of Revelation preserves examples of scriptural reuse that cohere with similar patterns of borrowing in other ancient Jewish works. This thesis describes the processes of reuse employed by Revelation's notional author (John), and places them into conversation with modes of reuse employed in other ancient Jewish texts, using Zechariah 1-8 as a test case. The design of the study has been crafted to explore these examples in a manner consistent with ancient textual composition. In the first chapter, I examine a dominant aspect of Jewish and early Christian textual culture: pluriformity. I argue that a pluriform scriptural tradition (in both Hebrew and Greek) was a controlling force that shaped the processes of scriptural reuse and, in turn, composition in this period. This analysis also delimits the possible forms of Zechariah available to ancient readers. With textual pluriformity in mind, the next chapter examines the text of Zech 1-8 preserved in John's scriptural references (Rev 5.6; 6.1-8, 9-11; 7.1; 11.4; 19.11-16). While this analysis is complicated by the author's presentation of reused material in Revelation, the evidence strongly suggests that John was familiar with a Hebrew form of Zechariah. Once John's preferred form of Zechariah is identified, the third chapter describes his techniques of reuse. This portion of the thesis consists of a catalogue and discussion of the differences in graphic representation between segments of Zech 1-8 and their instantiation in Revelation. This examination builds a set of textual data that accesses John's processes and strategies of reading. The fourth section of the thesis explores John's habits of reading as witnessed in his techniques of reuse. This section identifies features of Zech 1-8 that motivated John to engage with and alter the wording of antecedent material. Not every textual difference can be accounted for in this way, but it is evident that John is cognisant of the features of a particular form of Zech 1-8. Many of the differences between source and reuse can be explained as John's attempt to comprehend ambiguities in Zechariah. The final section of the thesis is a comparative analysis. The results of the preceding examinations of Revelation are compared to instances of the reuse of Zechariah in early Jewish literature, including works in the Hebrew Bible, the ancient versions of Zechariah, Dead Sea Scrolls, and works commonly classified as “deutero-canonical.” This analysis grounds previous observations about John's reuse in their native textual culture and acts as an historical control. The evidence suggests that John's modes of reading, reformulation, and reuse are similar to those found in other early Jewish works. The thesis concludes that scriptural reuse in the book of Revelation cannot be understood apart from the realities of textual pluriformity and the practices of scriptural reuse in Jewish antiquity. This approach suggests that John is a “scribal” expert—a careful reader of his scriptural tradition—and that his modes of reuse are conditioned by the textual culture of this period.

L'émergence d'une juridiction administrative moderne : le conseil de préfecture de la Gironde : (an VIII - IIème République) / The emergence of a modern administrative jurisdiction : the Council of prefecture of the Gironde : (Year VIII – Second Republic)

Viudès, Philippe 25 January 2013 (has links)
On February 17, 1800, the creation of the Council of prefecture, contemporary of that of the modern Council of State, marks a turning point in the history of administrative justice in France. However, despite the revival of the history of the administrative law in the last forty years, the Council of prefecture is remains most often regarded as belonging to the prehistory of modern administrative jurisdiction. The Council of prefecture is viewed as a virtually useless administrative organ, as a simple legal department composed of second class lawyers paying allegiance to the prefect. The recurrence of these judgments raises a real scientific interrogation which could usefully approached by the study of the concrete function of this institution. Thus, the exploration of the history of the Council of prefecture of the Gironde, in its daily praxis, allows the verification if, despite the deficiencies of the Law of the 28 pluviôse, year VIII, its foundation has or not marked the emergence of a modern administrative jurisdiction in this department.

Contribution du test de génération de thrombine in vitro à l'étude des troubles de la coagulation dans le drépanocytose / Contribution of in vitro thrombin generation in the study of coagulation abnormalities in sickle cell disease

Noubouossie, Fondjie-Denis 05 June 2013 (has links)
The exploration of coagulation in sickle cell patients showed mainly activation of coagulation and alterations pro-and anticoagulants actors of the hemostatic system. Routine global testing of coagulation such as the prothrombin time and the activated partial thromboplastin time are insensitive to hypercoagulable states. The overall hemostatic function in sickle cell disease was so little known. The thrombin generation test is a test of overall coagulation. It is sensitive to both hypo- and hypercoagulable states. It is easy to perform nowadays with good reproducibility. We used it to demonstrate that the overall coagulation of sickle cell disease children was characterized by an acceleration of the reactions of thrombin formation and an increase of the endogenous thrombin potential. We have subsequently shown that high levels of procoagulant microparticles and high levels of factor VIII in children with sickle cell disease are the factors determining the acceleration of reactions leading to thrombin formation. Our results also showed that the reduced activity of the protein C / S anticoagulant pathway is a determining factor of the increased endogenous thrombin potential in sickle cell children. Markers of hemolysis correlated significantly with these factors as well as the parameters of thrombin generation, suggesting that hemolysis is probably the pathological mechanism underlying the increased potential for thrombin generation in children with sickle cell disease. Nearly 40% of children with homozygous sickle cell disease had their hemostatic potential above the mean + 2SD that of controls children of the same age. These children with high thrombin generation differed from others by their younger age, greater intensity of hemolysis, a shorter duration of treatment with hydroxyurea. They also had higher velocity of blood flow using transcranial Doppler. These data further suggest a potential link between thrombin generation and cerebral vasculopathy in children with sickle cell disease. Analysis of four children who received hematopoietic stem cells transplantation showed a tendency towards a reversibility of thrombin generation and other alterations of coagulation three months after the transplant. Thrombin generation assay allows a better exploration of the global coagulation of sickle cell disease children. Its realization on whole blood would be a more comprehensive analysis as it would integrate the participation of blood cells particularly red blood cells.
