Sampaio, Paula Tedesco 04 May 2018 (has links)
The present research refers to the storage warehouses of coffee in the city of Santos, built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These warehouses were of great importance in the coffee export economy. Installed close to the port, they were used to store the coffee from the producer, while awaiting loading on ships. This industrial typology, present in the central region of the city of Santos, is integrated to the urban network, a characteristic that makes it interesting and, at the same time, puts it at constant risk. The objective of the work was to produce material that registers and analyzes this industrial architecture. The absence of research on this typology and the dynamics of the city\'s development makes the preservation of this built-up memory vulnerable. To that end, the remaining buildings were inventoried and studied through bibliographical, documentary, iconographic, field surveys and sketches. The case study, Roberto Warehouse, provided a better understanding of this typology and the deepening of the construction systems and machinery used at the time.

A Simulation Study of Warehouse Storage AssignmentEddy, Victoria M 30 April 2004 (has links)
Warehouse operations have become an important part of the retail industry today. For many companies in the retail industry, the profit margin can be as little as one cent for every dollar sold. Because of these extremely small profit margins, it is important that companies save as much in costs along the way as they can. One such way is to cut down on warehouse costs. In this paper, we shall study the costs of storing and retrieving products in a pick, pack and ship warehouse for an office supply company. In particular, we will examine possible ways to improve the flow of products into and out of reserve racking, by implementing different storage assignment policies. One way of finding the best possible storage assignments would be to formulate a cost equation along with constraints, and to minimize the cost using linear programming techniques. We shall study the Simplex Method, and we will use it to find optimal locations for a given set of storage tasks. However, the set of products to be stored and retrieved in our warehouse changes from day to day, and is subject to customer demand. Because there is no closed form solution or algorithm to find the optimal storage assignment policy under a random situation, we will use simulation techniques to study different storage assignment policies that could be applied in the warehouse. We will study the efficiency along with the maintenance requirements for each of the different policies and compare them with the current policy being used in the warehouse today.

Reinhabiting the Fort Point Channel : a proposal for transforming and extending the warehouse district in South Boston / Proposal for transforming and extending the warehouse district in South Boston / Warehouse district in South BostonDale, John Randall January 1986 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1986. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 209-213). / The focus of this design investigation is the warehouse fabric of the Fort Point Channel and its potentials as a model for further development This extensive configuration of warehouses and access roads is the product of an integrated process of planning. design and building. As such, it forms a useful model for creating a cohesive urban fabric. The warehouses reflect the rules of a concise architectural language. Thus, while each building was designed separately for different clients over the span of fifty years. all work together to form an urban environment which is intense. coherent and humane. Functionally, this fabric has undergone continuous change. Some of the warehouses now accommodate small printing houses and workshops; professional offices. shops, museums, studios and loft apartments. Thus. this tightly ordered 'family' of buildings has proven to be inherently inhabitable. The model represented by the warehouse fabric embodies my own goals and strategies for redeveloping and expanding the Fort Point Channel District as a living and working neighbourhood. My thesis proposes strategies for infrastructure and building typologies which will support high density, lowrise development as an extension to the existing fabric. The new development should be flexible, yet · harmonious: specific enough to suggest a distinct, overall character but open-ended enough to allow innovation in individual buildings and changing uses over time. The method tested through this investigation is therefore a process of layering. Rather than develop highly particularized solutions for each property, strategies are applied to the site as a whole. Once such overall strategies are agreed upon, specific solutions can be developed incrementally, but 'thematically', adjusting to changing circumstances as the need arises but contributing to a coherent whole. / by John Randall Dale. / M.S.

Energy efficient commercial buildings : a study of natural daylighting in the context of adaptive reuseCrowley, John Stephen January 1982 (has links)
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1982. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 157-159). / Daylighting is a powerful design element which can have a dramatic impact on people's perception of space, physical and psychological well-being as well as a building's annual and daily energy requirements. Understanding of the way daylight can penetrate a space , dramatize materials, create shadows and patterns, and is reflected and diffused gives an appreciation for light energy as a natural force. Historic precedents, and the response of contemporary architecture to the problems and possibilities of daylighting demonstrate the changes in values, and attitudes about the role of natural light and ventilation as they have been constructed in the landscape over a period of centuries. Three areas are investigated in considering the role of natural daylighting in the context of adaptive reuse. One is the historical evolution of atriums, their use as climate conditioners, as building form generators and as receptors of daylight. The second area is a qualitative and quantitative study of daylight. Topics explored are glazing location, diffusion and reflection elements, and psychological effects, impact on annual energy consumption and physical modeling. The third area of study is the development of a generic atrium piece which is the principal form and organizational generator of a design proposal for the reuse of a typical early 20th century warehouse building. / by John Stephen Crowley. / M.Arch.

There are different types of international cargo transportation in international commerce. One of them is air transportation, which is highly preferred by exporters who want their cargo to arrive in a short time to the chosen destination.
Within the variety of products that are mainly exported through this modality are: perishable products, high value products and low volume products.
In order to develop effectively the shipment of these kind of goods that are exported by air, it is necessary to fulfill those processes that cover the supply chain management of these products before proceeding with the export. One of them is the air logistics developed inside the existing storage terminals.
Talma and Shohin currently operate in Peru as the only air cargo warehouses. Each of them works with a certain number of airlines; Talma is the one that has the highest volume of customers. These air terminals, have different procedures and ways to manage their operations that generates a great variety of perceptions that come from foreign trade operators about the efficiency of the services offered by these air warehouses in terms of logistics costs, infrastructure and use of technology.
These factors are decisive in the perceptions of foreign trade operators about the services offered by Talma and Shohin. / Tesis

The main objective of this thesis work is to determine the causes of the slowly moving inventory and its possible solution, in a company dedicated to the commercialization of personal protective equipment.
First, a brief introduction is developed, consisting of the presentation of the topic, the formulation of the problem, the approach of the general objective and the specific objectives, the initial hypothesis, and finally; the foundation and sustenance of carrying out this investigation.
Next, the theoretical framework required for the adequate understanding and subsequent development of the research is detailed. The topics cover bibliographic and theoretical bases about inventories, warehouse management, supply chain and lean management.
The current situation of the slow-moving detected inventory is analyzed, which at the end of 2015 represented 30% of the total warehouse inventory, then lean methodologies have been progressively implemented until this percentage is reduced to 10% at the end of 2018, the objective of the organization is to maintain a standard between 5% and 10%, in that sense and aligned to the processes of continuous improvement is expected at the end of 2019 reach 5%, taking into account that the increase in these inventories of slow movement they carry financial consequences that this company assumes, due to the policies of the top management of the organizational headquarters located in London, England.
Then the opportunity for improvement is determined in the processes that have a greater impact on slow-moving inventories, through an ABC analysis to determine 20% of the stock that represents 80% of the cost; and implement, through methodologies suggested by Lean Management, strategies to reduce inventory with low turnover. / Trabajo de investigación

The effect of workload and age on compliance with and reliance on an automated systemMcBride, Sara E. 08 April 2010 (has links)
Automation provides the opportunity for many tasks to be done more effectively and with greater safety. However, these benefits are unlikely to be attained if an automated system is designed without the human user in mind. Many characteristics of the human and automation, such as trust and reliability, have been rigorously examined in the literature in an attempt to move towards a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between human and machine. However, workload has primarily been examined solely as an outcome variable, rather than as a predictor of compliance, reliance, and performance. This study was designed to gain a deeper understanding of whether workload experienced by human operators influences compliance with and reliance on an automated warehouse management system, as well to assess whether age-related differences exist in this interaction.
As workload increased, performance on the Receiving Packages task decreased among younger and older adults. Although younger adults also experienced a negative effect of workload on Dispatching Trucks performance, older adults did not demonstrate a significant effect. The compliance data showed that as workload increased, younger adults complied with the automation to a greater degree, and this was true regardless of whether the automation was correct or incorrect. Older adults did not demonstrate a reliable effect of workload on compliance behavior. Regarding reliance behavior, as workload increased, reliance on the automation increased, but this effect was only observed among older adults. Again, this was true regardless of whether the automation as correct or incorrect. The finding that individuals may be more likely to comply with or rely on faulty automation if they are in high workload state compared to a low workload state suggests that an operator's ability to detect automation errors may be compromised in high workload situations.
Overall, younger adults outperformed older adults on the task. Additionally, older adults complied with the system more than younger adults when the system erred, which may have contributed to their poorer performance. When older adults verified the instructions given by the automation, they spent longer doing so than younger adults, suggesting that older adults may experience a greater cost of verification. Further, older adults reported higher workload and greater trust in the system than younger adults, but both age groups perceived the reliability of the system quite accurately.
Understanding how workload and age influence automation use has implications for the way in which individuals are trained to interact with complex systems, as well as the situations in which automation implementation is determined to be appropriate.
