The religious significance of ritual practices conducted at births, weddings and funerals in LesothoOpong, Andrew Kwasi 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation aims at finding out the religious significance of Basotho ritual practices at births, weddings and funerals in Lesotho. The researcher combines literature review of scholars who have studied the Basotho socio-cultural life, with personal field study through dissemination
of questionnaires, interviews and personal observations. Through this approach he finds out the various ritual practices that dot the Basotho life through the rites of passage, and then studies their religiousness in terms of traditional beliefs. He also finds out how these ritual practices
have persisted in the face of Christian influence and western education, and how far they have been influenced. There is also an attempt to look into the importance of ancestor veneration in connection with
Basotho beliefs and practices. The study reveals that the religious connotation of the ritual practices lies in how people seek transcendental meaning to life through the ritual practices. / Religious Studies & Arabic / M.A. (Religious Studies)

Crowns, wedding rings, and processions : continuity and change in representations of Scottish royal authority in state ceremony, c.1214-c.1603Dean, Lucinda H. S. January 2013 (has links)
This inter-disciplinary thesis addresses the long term continuity and change found in representations of Scottish royal authority through state ceremonial bridging the gap between medieval and early modern across four centuries. Royal ceremony in Scotland has received very haphazard research to date, with few attempts to draw comparisons that explore how these crucial moments for the representation of royal authority developed over the course of a number of centuries. Three key royal ceremonies – inaugurations/coronations, funerals and weddings (with consort coronations) – form the core of this study of the Scottish monarchy from c.1214 to c.1603, and were chosen due to their integral position in the reign of each monarch. The issues of succession and security of hereditary monarchy dictate that the ceremonies of death and accession are inescapably intertwined, and funerals and coronations have been studied in unison together for other European comparators. However, the frequency of minor accessions, early and violent deaths, absentee kingship and political upheaval in Scotland across the time period determined from an early stage that weddings – often the first occasion for Scottish monarchs to project their personal adult authority and the point at which Scotland had the widest European audience for their display – were essential to forming a rounded view of developments. By offering a detailed analysis of these ceremonial developments across time, this study will provide the framework from which further research into royal ceremony and its place as essential platform for the dissemination of royal power can be undertaken. The thesis focuses upon key questions to illuminate the developments of these ceremonies as both reflectors of a distinct Scottish royal identity and representative of their integration within a broader European language of ceremony. How did these ceremonies reflect the ideals of Scottish kingship? How were they shaped to function within the parameters of Scottish governance and traditions? How was the Scottish crown influenced by other monarchies and the papacy? How did it hope to be perceived by the wider European community and how was royal power exercised over its subjects in this transitional period of Scottish history? The focus upon Scotland’s visual forays on the international stage and varied relations with European actors has required a continual comparison with other European countries across this time period, with particular attention being paid to England, France, Ireland and the Low Countries. Within the context of a highly public and interactive era of display and posturing by great leaders across Europe, crucial points this thesis engages with include: what made the Scottish ceremonies unique? And how can this further our understanding of that which lay beneath such representations of royal authority?

Exploring issues of identity and belonging in the films of Mira Nair : Salaam Bombay!, Mississippi Masala and Monsoon WeddingVan Lill, Hilda 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDram (Drama))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to study the themes of identity and belonging in the films of
Mira Nair. Three films form the basis of this study namely Salaam Bombay!,
Mississippi Masala and Monsoon Wedding. The approach is thematic, i.e using the
film to explore different socio-political themes of identity rather than looking at the
methodology she uses as a filmmaker.
The analysis of each of the three films looks at a particular form of identity namely
national, cultural or personal identity, and makes reference to Nair’s own comments
on the films as well as academic articles on the films, her work and issues such as
identity, nostalgia, home, belonging, marginalization, immigrants, street children and
the like, in order to interrogate Nair’s exploration of the particular ideas within these
films.
It examines the films as if it were a work of literature, and looks at how it deals with
these issues within a filmic context. What symbols does she use to show us we are
dealing with cultural identity? Which character is symbolic of the modernist
movement? Finally it examines the potential effect of these films on the society from
which they derive, and comes to some conclusions about the effect these films may
have in challenging, shaping and/or influencing ideas about nostalgia, home, identity,
and so on. The discussions of the films show that she has been superbly able to
exploit all the advantages of her chosen medium to bring her remarkable visual
inventiveness and artistry into play in order to communicate this to an international
audience and to make them think about the issues at hand. The filmmaker is finally
established not only as simply a creator of film, but ultimately as a thinker and poet.
as filmmaker te bestudeer.
digter.

Momentary immortality : Greek praise poetry and the rhetoric of the extraordinaryMeister, Felix Johannes January 2015 (has links)
This thesis takes as its starting point current views on the relationship between man and god in Archaic and Classical Greek literature, according to which mortality and immortality are primarily temporal concepts and, therefore, mutually exclusive. This thesis aims to show that this mutual exclusivity between mortality and immortality is emphasised only in certain poetic genres, while others, namely those centred on extraordinary achievements or exceptional moments in the life of a mortal, can reduce the temporal notion of immortality and emphasise instead the happiness, success, and undisturbed existence that characterise divine life. Here, the paradox of momentary immortality emerges as something attainable to mortals in the poetic representation of certain occasions. The chapters of this thesis pursue such notions of momentary immortality in the wedding ceremony, as presented through wedding songs, in celebrations for athletic victory, as presented through the epinician, and at certain stages of the tragic plot. In the chapter on the wedding song, the discussion focuses on explicit comparisons between the beauty of bride and bridegroom and that of heroes or gods, and between their happiness and divine bliss. The chapter on the epinician analyses the parallelism between the achievement of victory and the exploits of mythical heroes, and argues for a parallelism between the victory celebration and immortalisation. Finally, the chapter on tragedy examines how characters are perceived as godlike because of their beauty, success, or power, and discusses how these perceptions are exploited by the tragedians for certain effects. By examining features of a rhetoric of praise, this thesis is not concerned with the beliefs or expectations of the author, the recipient of praise, or the surrounding milieu. It rather intends to elucidate how moments conceived of as extraordinary are communicated in poetry.

Manželství z křesťanského pohledu / Marriage from a Christian PerspectiveAmbrosio, Šárka January 2014 (has links)
Manželství z křesťanského pohledu Marriage from a Christian Perspective Šárka Ambrosio This work is based on the provisions of the biblical creation of man (as male and female) and the concept of marriage in the New and Old Testament. I reflected on the legal status of marriage in modern society and the provision of marriage according to the order of the Roman Catholic Church, the Czechoslovak Hussite Church society and the Christian community center as well as comparing their views on marriage and their wedding ceremonies. This literal work is divided into two parts. The first section is a biblical description of marriage from the old and new testament and its perspective regarding marriage from these three individual churches. The second section describes ten moral values of a healthy Christian marriage from my own personal observations and studies from the Bible. This chapter may be an inspiration to many people and to their marriages. The various questions about marriage are answered in the Bible. Every marriage has the chance to resolve its own issues for a healthy and satisfying relationship. The aim of this work was not only to describe marriage from the three different Churches, but also to show people that if two individuals share a common faith and have core values, the greater chance they...
