This study is undertaken in order to calibrate the continuous velocity logs using the comparision of synthetics and field records. The results refer to the following wells in Alberta.

The synthetic records were obtained using a linear filter model. To accomplish the synthesizing process in the laboratory, a magnetic tape function generator is used. The two-way time-depth curves are- plotted for these three wells. From these curves-the time intervals of continuous velocity logs were found in-error by 0.007 seconds to 0.0082 seconds. The possible errors in time scale of synthetic seismograms are discussed in Chapter IV.
The comparision of synthetics with actual field seismograms recorded corresponding well locations and the main creteria for a "good match" and "poor match" are discussed. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate

Development work in the field of mineral borehole logging was made in the areas of instrumentation, field testing, data processing and interpretation. / Instrumentation work included a VLF logging tool compatible with a field digital computer configured to perform log instrumentation control, numerical data acquisition and recording together with video screen graphic display. Significant improvements in the overall precision and reliability of the logging operation has been realized through the use of digital technology. / The field tests included the measurements of the following parameters: electrical resistivity, induced polarization, spontaneous polarization, electromagnetic field ratio and phase difference and temperature. The tests were performed for a wide variety of environments and targets including massive and disseminated sulfides, structural problems, coal and gold fields on properties located in Eastern Canada from Sudbury to Cape Breton Island. / The interpretation of the data yields information complementing core information such as detection of materials with some electric property contrast, localization of off-hole mineralization both in massive and disseminated form and determination of absolute value of specific in-situ rock physical properties. A better understanding of several underground processes (such as SP, uniform field induction, etc.) has resulted from the project.

Innovative Thermal Management of Electronics Used in Oil Well LoggingJakaboski, Juan-Carlos 14 May 2004 (has links)
The oil and gas industries use sophisticated logging tools during and after drilling. These logging tools employ internal electronics for sensing viscosity, pressure, temperature, and other important quantities. To protect the sensitive electronics, which typically have a maximum allowable temperature of 100 㬠they are shielded and insulated from the harsh external drilling environment. The insulation reduces the external heat input, but it also makes rejection of the heat generated within the electronics challenging. Electronic component failures promoted by elevated temperatures, and thermal stress, require a time consuming and expensive logging tool replacement process. Better thermal management of the electronics in logging tools promises to save oil and gas companies time and money.
This research focuses on this critical thermal management challenge. Specifically, this thesis describes the design, fabrication, and test of an innovative thermal management system capable of cooling commercial-off-the-shelf electronics for extended periods in harsh ambient temperatures exceeding 200 㮠Resistive heaters embedded in quad-flat-packages simulate the electronics used in oil well logging. A custom high temperature oven facilitates the evaluation of a full scale prototype of the thermal management system. We anticipate the prototype device will validate computer modeling efforts on which its design was based, and advance future designs of the thermal management system.
