Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923), British Modernist writer whose search for authentic selves in the lives of the characters in her short stories, is reflected in her innovative style of writing in which she examines the interior consciousness of their minds.
Mansfield questions the inauthentic lives of the characters, revealing that the roles they play are socially imposed forcing them to hide their true selves behind masks.
The stories which have been chosen for this study focus on women characters (and men also) who grapple with societal prescriptions for accepted actions, and are rendered mute as a result. The women characters include all age groups and social classes. Some are young and impressionable (The Tiredness of Rosabel, The Little Governess and The Garden Party), others are married and older (Bliss, Prelude and Frau Brechenmacher attends a wedding ), while there are also middle-aged women in Miss Brill and The Life of Ma Parker. / English Studies / M.A. (English)

Many accounts, both ancient and modern, have maintained that the Julio-
Claudian women had unprecedented influence in their spheres. This
dissertation attempts to determine the degree of autonomy and influence that
the Julio-Claudian women had and to examine the factors that may have
contributed to their exceptional influence.
In trying to establish the extent and nature of the influence of the Julio-
Claudian women, the ancient sources (literary, documentary and iconographic),
in conjunction with modern scholarly views, were critically examined
throughout. In attempting to determine the factors that influenced such weight
and autonomy as these women had, the dissertation looks at the influences on
women of earlier times, in particular the late Roman Republic, from a legal and
a socio-historical angle. Whether the Julio-Claudian women could be
considered, for example, to have been part of a “super-elite” in comparison
with aristocratic women of earlier, and even later, times, was discussed and
evaluated.
On the surface the Julio-Claudian women did seem to enjoy a wider range
of freedoms, power and influence than their counterparts, or the Roman
women before or after them. Yet it is clear from the sources that these women
also had restrictions laid upon them and that the patriarchal framework still
curtailed their influence. When they over-stepped the accepted bounds, they
were invariably vilified by the ancient historians, and often came to be
negatively portrayed by subsequent generations. Whether these women truly
deserved their vilification, or whether it can simply be ascribed to the bias of

Chapter 2 is devoted to the Feminist theory, the origin of the term stereotype and

African perspective, known as Womanism, has been deliberated on.
Chapter 3 concentrates mainly on two women authors, Damane and
Makhambeni. This chapter looks at how these authors have depicted their female
characters. It also examines the stereotypes employed by these female authors.
Chapter 4 is devoted to the writing of male authors. This chapter also
concentrates on the stereotypes employed by them in their analysis of their female
characters.

Narration in the novels of selected nineteenth-century women writers : Jane Austen, The Bronte Sisters, and Elizabeth GaskellTownsend, Rosemary 06 1900 (has links)
In this studyi apply a feminist-narratological grid to
the works under discussion. I show how narration is used as
strategy to highlight issues of concern to women, hereby
attempting to make a contribution in the relatively new field
of feminist narratology.
Chapter One provides an analysis of Pride and Prejudice
as an example of a feminist statement by Jane Austen. The use
of omniscient narration and its ironic possibilities are
offset against the central characters' perceptions, presented
by means of free indirect style.
Chapter Two examines The Tenant of Wildfell Hall as a
critique of Wuthering Heights, both in its use of narrative
frames and in its at times moralistic comment. The third and
fourth chapters focus on Charlotte Bronte. Her ambivalences
about the situation of women, be they writers, narrators or
characters, are explored. These are seen to be revealed in her
narrative strategies, particularly in her attainment of
closure, or its lack.
Chapter Five explores the increasing sophistication of
the narrative techniques of Elizabeth Gaskell, whose early
work Mary Barton is shown to have narrative inconsistencies as
opposed to her more complex last novel Wives and Daughters.
Finally, I conclude that while the authors under
discussion use divergent methods, certain commonalities
prevail. Among these are the presentation of alternatives
women have within their constraining circumstances and the
recognition of their moral accountability for the choices they

Women and nature in the works of French female novelists, 1789-1815Margrave, Christie L. January 2015 (has links)
On account of their supposed link to nature, women in post-revolutionary France were pigeonholed into a very restrictive sphere that centred around domesticity and submission to their male counterparts. Yet this thesis shows how a number of women writers – Cottin, Genlis, Krüdener, Souza and Staël – re-appropriate nature in order to reclaim the voice denied to them and to their sex by the society in which they lived. The five chapters of this thesis are structured to follow a number of critical junctures in the life of an adult woman: marriage, authorship, motherhood, madness and mortality. The opening sections to each chapter show why these areas of life generated particular problems for women at this time. Then, through in-depth analysis of primary texts, the chapters function in two ways. They examine how female novelists craft natural landscapes to expose and comment on the problems male-dominant society causes women to experience in France at this time. In addition, they show how female novelists employ descriptions of nature to highlight women's responses to the pain and frustration that social issues provoke for them. Scholars have thus far overlooked the natural settings within the works of female novelists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Yet, a re-evaluation of these natural settings, as suggested by this thesis, brings a new dimension to our appreciation of the works of these women writers and of their position as critics of contemporary society. Ultimately, an escape into nature on the part of female protagonists in these novels becomes the means by which their creators confront the everyday reality faced by women in the turbulent socio-historical era which followed the Revolution.

However, from a political view, the YWCA is underestimated because it failed to lead the Chinese women to the final liberation through a revolutionary way. This dissertation attempts to represent the YWCA history in Modern Chinese from a gender perspective and emphasize its meaning to Chinese women's development which is beyond the body liberation. In addition, it is hoped to present a case study that reveals the evaluation bias that women movement and women organizations have to face up today. Recognizing the obstruction and the shackles of male hierarchy should benefit the independent construction of women's development model. / The Young Women's Christian Association originated in England and the United States in the latter half of the nineteenth century was introduced into China in 1890. Via its various works, the YWCA took root in Chinese women of different ages, different nationalities, and different religious beliefs. The purpose of this thesis is to examine to what extent representations of double jeopardy and the stereotypical images of African American females: Mammy, Matriarch, Sapphire, and Strong Black Woman emerge in the blues lyrics of Alberta Hunter, Gertrude "Ma" Rainy, Memphis Minnie, and Victoria Spivey, using the theoretical framework of Black feminist rhetorical critique. The findings in this research entail several meanings regarding the lives of African American women during the 1920s and 1930s. Representations of racism, sexism, and classism also appear in the theme of relationships with various subthemes. The focus of this study is to explore the evolution of Black music and examine the role women have played in both the development and advancement of the blues genre. Additionally, the study will explore various concepts of cultural identity development in order to establish the process of how identity is constructed and negotiated in African Americans specifically African American women.

The discourse of women writers in the French Revolution: Olympe de Gouges and Constance de Salm / Olympe de Gouges and Constance de SalmDe Mattos, Rudy Frédéric, 1974- 28 August 2008 (has links)
Twentieth-century scholars have extensively studied how Rousseau's domestic discourse impacted the patriarchal ideology in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and contributed to women's exclusion from the public sphere. Joan Landes, Lynn Hunt, and many others, argued that the French Revolution excluded women from the public sphere and confined them to the domestic realm. Joan Landes also argued that the patriarchal discourse was a mere reflection of social reality. In The Other Enlightenment, Carla Hesse argues for the women's presence in the public sphere. One of the goals of this dissertation is to contribute to the debate by analyzing the content of the counter-discourse of selected women authors during the revolutionary era and examine how they challenged and subverted the patriarchal discourse. In the second chapter, I reconstruct the patriarchal discourse. I first examine the official (or legal) discourse in crucial works which remain absent from major modern sources: Jean Domat's Loix civiles dans leur order naturel and Louis de Héricourt's Loix eccleésiastiques de France dans leur order naturel. Then I look at how scientists like Monroe, Roussel, Lignac, Venel, and Robert used discoveries regarding woman's physiology to create a medical discourse that justifies woman's inferiority so as to confine them into the domestic/private sphere. I examine how intellectuals such as Rousseau, Diderot, Montesquieu, Coyer and Laclos, reinforced women's domesticity. In chapter 3, I examine women's participation in the early stage of the Revolution and the overt attempt by some women to claim their place in the public sphere and to challenge and subvert the oppressive patriarchal discourse through their writings. Chapter 4 focuses on Olympe de Gouges's theater and a specific example of subversion of the patriarchal discourse: I compare the father figure in Diderot's La Religieuse and de Gouges's play Le Couvent, ou les Voeux forcés. Finally chapter 5 examines women's involvement in the French Revolution after 1794 and Constance de Salm's attack on patriarchy.
