Creating Cultural Connections: A Renaissance in Midtown Between 1900 and 1983

This dissertation documents a time between 1960 and 1983 in Midtown when a complex set of social, political, and cultural forces merged to challenge the dominance of elite groups of businessmen and arts patrons who had dominated growth and development there since the early 1920s. I argue that interaction among these disparate groups affected the character of Midtown, making the community a more vibrant, inclusive, and interesting place to live and do business. After experiencing softer and less militant approaches to resistance, members of the Atlanta Arts Alliance adopted fresh approaches to the meaning of “Art,” and ways that creativity became more representative of the multicultural Atlanta community. Many members shifted away from positions of cultural exclusivity into a realm that appealed to a more diverse population.

Reverence and Rhetorology: How Harmonizing Paul Woodruff's Reverence and Wayne Booth's Rhetorology Can Foster Understanding Within Communities

Wayne Booth's neologism rhetorology, introduced in 1981, hasn't caught on in rhetorical scholarship. Nevertheless, in this essay I hope to revive rhetorology by harmonizing it with Paul Woodruff's work on reverence. I show how harmonizing these terms makes each more comprehensible. In order to illustrate how reverence and rhetorology might be made more practical I also analyze two arguments in the health care debate leading up to the passing of the Affordable Health Care for America Act in early 2010. Ultimately I hope to show that rhetorology is a reverent rhetorical practice, one that can help us restore a needed sense of communal reverence in contemporary democracy.

Structural Geology of Eastern Part of Dairy Ridge Quadrangle and Western Part of Meachum Ridge Quadrangle, Utah

A detailed geologic investigation was made of the eastern part of the Dairy Ridge Quadrangle and the western part of the Meachum Ridge Quadrangle, Utah. The area is located in north-central Utah in Rich County. It lies between lat. 41°22'30" N. and lat. 41° 28'50" N. and between long. 111° 21'40" W. and long. 111°25'15" W. The area measures 13.8 km in the north-south direction and 5.5 km in the east-west direction. It is on the eastern side of the Wasatch Range about 20 km west-southwest of Randolph, Utah. Stratigraphic units of Precambrian to Cambrian age crop out in the western part of the area, above the Woodruff thrust fault, and dip west. These include the Precambrian Mutual Formation and the Cambrian Geertsen Canyon Quartzite. Units of Pennsylvanian to Jurassic age crop out in the eastern part of the area below the Woodruff thrust fault. They dip west and are overturned to the east. These units include the following: Pennsylvanian Weber Formation, Permian Grandeur Member of the Park City Formation, Permian Phosphoria Formation, Triassic Thaynes Limestone, Triassic Ankareh Formation, Jurassic Nugget Sandstone, and Jurassic Twin Creek Limestone. The Tertiary Wasatch Formation unconformably overlies all older units in places. The Woodruff thrust fault is the major structural feature of the area. Quartzite of the Precambrian Mutual Formation is thrust eastward over the Pennsylvanian Weber Formation as well as over formations of Permian and Triassic ages. The Woodruff thrust fault strikes about N. 20° E. and dips 18° W. to 33° W. Stratigraphic throw is at least 5,800 m. Probable horizontal displacement is tens of kilometers. The stratigraphic units, under the thrust fault, dip west and are overturned to the east. They form the western limb of a large asymmetrical syncline. The overturned units are cut by a west-dipping high-angle thrust fault. The syncline and the thrust faults were produced by the Sevier orogeny which began in latest Jurassic or earliest Cretaceous time. Deformation may have continued into Paleocene time.

Education in Transition: Church and State Relationships in Utah Education, 1888-1933

Utah's current educational systems were largely shaped by a transitional era that occurred during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A time when the region itself moved from territorial to state status, the dominant religion in the area, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), likewise changed in its role in Utah society. Previously dominating most aspects of life, the Church was forced to reevaluate its place in society due to greatly increased secular power and context. Educational changes, as harbingers of larger societal shifts, are illustrative of such paradigm changes. During the four decade period stretching from 1888 to 1933, the LDS Church experimented with several private educational endeavors, seeking to maintain its place in the changing Utah society. Originally opposed to public education, these experimental private schools eventually became part of the public system itself as the Church restructured its paradigm. St. George, Utah, like many of the LDS-dominated intermountain communities, experimented with these educational changes during this era. Key to this experimentation was the St. George Stake Academy, founded in 1888 as a religious alternative for the region's youth. Though challenged initially, the privately sponsored Church school grew as did its public counterparts during the early twentieth century. Eventually, this growth included expansion into post-secondary education, as the school became Dixie Normal College, Dixie Junior College, Dixie College, and ultimately Dixie State College. Such growing, however, brought increased financial need. Faced with rising costs and budgetary restraints caused by periods of economic depression, the LDS Church rethought its educational policy. In the 1920s and early 1930s, the Church restructured its educational system, turning over to the state many programs originally intended as religious alternatives to public schools. This study traces the changing nature of education in Utah from 1888 to 1933, illuminating the process of paradigm change within religious organizations. Using St. George as the model, it tracks the roles the state and the LDS Church played in shaping the current educational structure, as both parties sought to understand their place in society.
