Social comparison, social networking sites, and the workplaceTomasik, Rachel E. January 2015 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Although social comparison has been studied for over 60 years, little research has
been done to determine the effects it has on the workplace. Moreover, the explosion of
social networking sites and their potential impact on the workplace have been largely
overlooked by organizational researchers. Therefore, this study will attempt to evaluate
the effect social comparison, specifically through social media, has on work relevant
outcomes such as one’s job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and entitlement, moderated by
materialism (relevance) and job expectations (attainability) of the referent other.
Participants selected from an alumni database of a large Midwestern University were
asked to view a manipulated Facebook newsfeed page and then complete a brief survey
(N=290). A hierarchical multiple regression was conducted to assess the hypotheses.
Results, implications, and limitations are also discussed.

The impact of employee wellness programme on employee wellness and performance : a Kwazulu-Natal Municipality case studyMakhanya, Buhle 01 1900 (has links)
The general aim of this study was to gain insight into the perceptions and experiences
of line managers regarding the impact of an employee wellness programme (EWP) on
employee wellness and performance at a selected municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. As
a purposive sample, ten line managers were selected to participate in the study by
means of semi-structured interviews. The literature review aimed to conceptualise
wellness, employee wellness and employee performance, as well as to explore the
impact of EWPs on employee wellness and performance. The specific empirical study
aims were to determine line managers’ level of awareness and knowledge of the
municipality EWP and its purpose, to explore the challenges faced by line managers
within the EWP, to explore if the line managers perceived and experienced the
municipality EWP as being beneficial to employee wellness and whether participating
in the EWP improved employee performance. Lastly, the aim was to make
recommendations for improvement that can assist the municipality in enhancing the
impact of the EWP on employee wellness and performance within the industrial
psychology discipline, and in particular when it comes to employee wellness.
The research findings reveal that line managers were aware of and had knowledge
about the existence of the EWP through marketing campaigns, inductions and
activities. They also confirmed they had personal engagement experience through
participation in the programme. They perceived the main purpose of the EWP as being
to support employees in achieving a work-life balance and providing counselling and
advisory services. Participants noted certain challenges with regard to participating in
the programme, such as fear of being judged, victimised and stigmatised, and a lack
of confidentiality and trust, which affects employees’ privacy and security. Also, they
doubted wellness officer competence, which included the necessary skills and training
for dealing with complex cases. Lastly, gender and cultural beliefs also posed
challenges. Line managers found it beneficial to participate in the EWP. It improved
employee wellness and performance. Employees developed mechanisms to cope with
work, personal and emotional problems. Wellness officer availability, competence and
skills were recommended by participants as ways of enhancing the EWP. Involvement
of other stakeholders was another recommendation for improvement. This
involvement would include wellness champions, organised labour and line managers.
Programme managers should consider increasing EWP awareness by improving
marketing, while emphasising programme benefits and confidentiality. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Com (Industrial and Organizational Psychology)

Exploring the impact of wellbeing and adjustment at a South African higher education institutionMhlanga, Moleen 06 1900 (has links)
This study explored the lived experiences of foreign academics’ wellbeing and adjustment and the impact thereof on their job performance in a South African higher education (HE) institution. The qualitative interpretive study reviewed the literature on wellbeing, adjustment and job performance. It explored the impact of wellbeing and adjustment factors on performance, both personally and professionally. The job demands-resources (JD-R) model was applied in the study to demonstrate that when job resources are high, employee wellbeing, adjustment and job performance is enhanced. Purposive sampling was used to draw a sample of five foreign academics who were employed at the HE institution for more than one year and originated from different countries. Online video calling was used to gather data from the participants using semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was used to create themes and sub-themes from which the study findings were derived and conclusions, as well as recommendations, were made. The study revealed that the wellbeing and adjustment of foreign academics have a significant impact on their job performance. Recommendations were made to the HR managers, I/O psychologists, foreign academics as well as line managers on how to improve the wellbeing and adjustment of foreign academics at the HE institution. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Rolkonflik by die werkende moeder : 'n geestesgesondheidsperspektief / Role conflict experienced by the working mother : a mental health perspectiveVosloo, Salome Erna 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this research was to study the role conflict experienced by the working mother from the mental health perspective. The literature study includes a description of role behaviour as well as variables within the organisational, work and family spheres that influence role conflict. Growth psychology is presented from analytical, humanistic and existential perspectives, culminating in a profile of the mentally healthy personality. The operational aims involved an investigation of variables that influence role conflict and the personality functioning of ten working mothers who are bringing up their first child. This was conducted through unstructured interviews. This involved determining the relationship between role conflict and a mentally healthy personality, to determine how mental health facilitates coping with role conflict. The results indicate that the working mother showed growth in her personality functioning as a result of the experience of her role as mother. However, the results also indicate that a positive orientation to career, minimal job security for the mother working in her own business, inflexible working conditions, support from significant others, role restriction and high penetrability between the roles of mother and worker, are themes that influence the conflict that the working mother experiences which, in turn, influences her mental health. The working mother experiences conflict between her roles as mother, worker, spouse and individuaL Unique variables that influence role conflict in the South African context were identified, namely, role restriction and minimal job security for the mother who operates her own business. The mental personality functioning of the working mother was compared with the developed personality profile. It seems that accurate and realistic observation of experiences, freedom to express feelings, religion, future orientation and close interpersonal relationships, influence the working mother's mental health positively and lead to better coping with role conflict. In contrast she could grow in terms of the following characteristics: lack of self-knowledge, little freedom of choice, little control over emotions as well as unacceptance and intolerance of others. Recommendations were made to the industrial psychology practice and the working mother herself,
on how to handle role conflict, and also regarding future research possibilities. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / D. Comm. (Bedryfsielkunde)

'n Ergonomiese studie oor oorhoofse kraanoperateurs se werksomgewing en beroepsgesondheidBezuidenhout, Sussanna Maria 11 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Summaries in English and Afrikaans / This study aims to investigate the relation between a crane operator in a slab handlingarea's experience of his/her work environment and occupational health. A study of the literature leads one to the conclusion that the nature of crane operators' work environment may cause health problems. According to the literature crane operators are high risk cases regarding musculoskeletal disorders. The empirical study affirms that there are risk factors present in the crane operator's work environment, which may influence his/her occupational health. It is statistically proven that there is a meaningful difference between crane operators with a negative experience of the work environment and crane operators with a positive experience of the work environment, and the amount of illnesses experienced by crane operators as well as their general health. Recommendations are made regarding training, adjustability and flexibility of the work station, job rotation, job expansion and enrichment, and social contact. Retention and engagement of generation Y engineers : a hermeneutic phenomenological inquiryMarais, Marie-Henriette 08 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore how Generation Y engineers in South Africa experience their work and based on this to determine how companies should be orientated toward their retention and engagement. I followed a qualitative research approach informed by the hermeneutic phenomenological paradigm, making use of a case study approach and in-depth unstructured interviews with six Generation Y engineers. My findings showed that even though retention cannot be ensured, hygiene retention factors are needed for initial retention and task and work-setup engagement for prolonged retention. Personal passion and commitment relating to career engagement are valued above organisational engagement and commitment. Companies should focus on the identified hygiene retention factors and on engaging these participants through providing for certain elements in their task and work setup. / Industrial & Organisational Psychology / M. The influence of psychosocial meta-capacities on learning capacity development in a foreign government agencyKhan, Rokshana 11 1900 (has links)
This qualitative study investigated the influences of psychosocial meta-capacities on learning capacity development in a foreign government agency that is undergoing extensive organisational change. The data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with seven participants, who are employees of a foreign visa-processing unit based in South Africa. The participants shared their experiences during the organisational change process, and how different aspects impacted on their learning capacity development. The study highlighted self-efficacy and emotional intelligence as key meta-capacities that can be enhanced to aid learning capacity development. Furthermore, the study recommended that organisations intending to introduce significant changes should be aware of the psychosocial meta-capacities that can be exploited to enhance employee learning capacity development, thereby ultimately ensuring organisational success. This study seems to suggest that the positive influences on learning capacity development are: self-efficacy in the form of self- beliefs about one’s performance ability; the ability to take initiative; and learning orientation - for example, a sense of exploration; emotional intelligence in the form of self-awareness in relation to what needs to happen, and the positive impact of social support systems, for example, supervisors, role models and fellow colleagues. Negative influences on learning capacity development seem to include the following: the inability to manage performance anxiety; high levels of self-doubt, the lack of technical expertise, and learning paralysis in the form of procrastination and the lack of self-motivation. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.
