Internship design and its impact on intrinsic motivation and student career choice

Stansbie, Paul January 2012 (has links)
This study examines the role experiential education, in the form of internships, plays in the professional development of Hospitality and Tourism Management students. Through an appraisal of the literature, it outlines the many benefits available to direct and indirect stakeholders through the facilitation of a structured, work based learning experience. In particular, it analyses the internship through an evaluation of job design by applying both Hackman and Oldham’s (1975a) Job Characteristics Model (JCM) and developing a proposed intern’s version of that model. The outcomes demonstrate that dimensions of the work undertaken do contribute significantly to an individual’s satisfaction and intrinsic motivation with the proposed intern’s model offering improved R2 coefficients, over the original JCM, by using different predictive variables. The study further sub-divides the sample by examining the findings by cohort and emphasis area. This affords the opportunity to identify specific recommendations on internship design that provides maximum utility to the student participant and the facilitators of the work experience. To this end, the results offer a series of recommended job dimensions for various service industry destinations including the need for increased task significance and feedback from agents for tourism students, opportunities for an autonomous work environment for event planners, exposure to a variety of skills for lodging professionals and feedback from the job for food and beverage students. By designing internships in this way, opportunities for enriched work are created for students at the case-study university. The study also examines the role classroom education plays in underpinning the internship experience and finds that while this assists students in observing many of the topics and theories discussed in a theoretical setting, the experiential component of the learning enhances their education through the development of new skills and competencies not previously taught. Overall, this study offers a unique contribution to the existing body of knowledge on experiential education and its impact on worker/job satisfaction and intrinsic motivation.

En kvalitativ uppsats om socialsekreterares val att lämna sitt yrke / A qualitative study about social workers choice to leave their profession

Darius, Louise, Stroh, Veronika January 2016 (has links)
In this paper, it was investigated why social workers in a western Swedish municipality have chosen to leave their professions. The main reason behind this study is that the lack of social workers is a national problem that Sweden's municipalities struggle with, especially in today's society when refugees are pouring in and need to be attended to. The research was conducted using qualitative interviews. To analyse the results of the interviews several theories where used, such as motivation, salutogenic leadership, strategies of coping and role theory. For the interviews, thematic analysis was used. The study showed that the informers felt dissatisfied with several aspects of their work. One of the aspects that resulted from the interviews was that the demand to be available at all times, was too much for them. Some additional aspects to why they quit was the high workload, the lack of appreciation and dissatisfaction with the leadership. The informers would gladly have stayed as social workers since they considered it to be meaningful, but the other aspects weighed more heavily compared to meaningfulness which caused them to leave. One suggestion that was brought up to get the informers to stay was to create a so-called contact centre in the reception area where smaller errands could be handled directly with the client. This would have given more time for the social workers with their own clients and more energy for the more heavy cases.

Andersson, Linda January 2016 (has links)
Coping – a qualitative study of experiences of stress and burn-out in the work with children and youth within the social services. The aim of this study was to examine experiences and coping of work related stress and burn-out among social workers within the child and youth department of the social services in a larger municipality of Sweden. It is a qualitative study built on interviews with social workers about their experiences of stressful situations in their demanding working environment, and how they manage to handle these. They find their work-load unrestricted and demanding. To guard their own limits to their work-load and engagement in the organization and cases they work with, and to prioritize the duties they find most important, are found to be the main coping strategies. Support from colleagues and family, as well as working part time when having children, are also expressed as important factors in managing the stressful working situation, and to hopefully avoid burn-out.

Berisha, Lendita, Lindhe Escobar, Jessika January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate which aspects of social secretaries profession in theorganization that they feel contributes to high workloads, how they describe their handling of itand how they possibly improve their work situation and what work factors they perceive asmeaningful and that makes them still work in social services. To answer the purpose of the studywe used a qualitative approach in the form of semi-structured interviews. These interviews havesince been interpreted to find similarities and differences which then has been analyzed usingsociological theories about the organization's role, requirements and control and sense ofcoherence. The study results show that social workers in periods experienced heavy workload. The result also discusses the various strategies that the social workers made use of to be able tohandle this. The results also showed that social workers felt that there are a lot of rewards andthat they still see their work as meaningful. Our conclusion was that the workload does not needto be seen as a problem as long as the cooperation between management and employees worked.

The influence of teleworkers on entrepreneurship in startups

Alounladeth, Marise, Collignon, Thibaud January 2016 (has links)
Teleworking has first been introduced in the U.S. after the oil crisis that has happened during the 1970s. The main purpose of teleworking in that time was to save fuel and energy regarding the high prices that were practiced on it. Nowadays, this untraditional way of working is back on stage as the improvements in technology have considerably contributed to its spreading and the rise of the e-commerce industry has increased the demand of teleworkers. Our study focuses on the teleworkers in the context of startups and analyze the effects of them on the entrepreneurial atmosphere that involves these small ventures. There is evidence that startups are likely to hire teleworkers because they usually have small offices. Moreover, besides keeping low costs in terms of structure and free up more space, they are motivated to employ them in order to become more productive. But besides this little insight, a very few has yet explored further on this research area, although it would have been interesting for employers to know more about it. Thus, our study questions how teleworkers that have been depicted as assets for startups foster entrepreneurship. Geographically speaking, our research focuses on the French territory and startups that are thus based in France. This study was conducted using a qualitative study and using interviews as a way to gather data. To answer our research question, we have interviewed five teleworkers from French startups and five employers/managers that are actually working with these telecommuters. We followed the principles of semi-structured interviews by using an interview guideline and following it in the main guidelines. We have structured our interviews in three main themes regarding our topic and the theoretical framework we have developed: teleworking, startup and innovation, entrepreneurship and innovation. Our results have demonstrated that the better work environment, and the flexibility provided by teleworking were characteristics that are helping to foster entrepreneurship in startups. These teleworkers are more likely to identify and discover opportunities, but also to exploit them, and increase the innovativeness that is key to entrepreneurship and startups.

Experience of Supervision Scale: The Development of an Instrument to Measure Child Welfare Workers' Experience of Supervisory Behaviors

Parente, Mary 23 March 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop and test the Experience of Supervision Scale, which measures the experience of supervisory behaviors from the perspective of child welfare workers. Child welfare supervision is gaining increased attention as states struggle to improve performance measures of their child welfare systems. However, the lack of a standardized instrument which measures supervision through an analysis of supervisory behaviors from the supervisee’s perspective has hindered efforts in these areas. The Experience of Supervision Scale is based on Kadushin’s three function casework supervision model of supervision (administrative, educational, and supportive) which was chosen as the theoretical framework due to this model’s emphasis on public agency clinical case work practice. Scale items were generated through focus groups of child welfare workers and supervisors. Items were reviewed by an expert panel and the scale was then administered to a statewide sample of 165 child welfare workers. The refined Experience of Supervision Scale consists of 32 items. In this study, it demonstrated high internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha of .962. Factor analysis yielded a three factor solution consistent with the casework model of supervision’s structure, while also suggesting slight modifications to the model. The three factors derived included: Performance Support, Emotional support/Availability, and Administrative activities. The results of this study suggest that the Experience of Supervision Scale has appropriate psychometric properties for use in complex research in which casework supervision is a variable.

Adaptace dětí z náhradní péče do společnosti / Transition of children from alternative care into society

Slobodová, Eliška January 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with the functioning of the family in connection with the physiological and psychosocial development of children. It also describes the reasons why children are taken away from the family and the options of residential care. The first option is institutional care in orphanages and therefore we mention several organisations that offer projects to help these children in particular to have an easier entry to life after the completion of institutional care. The empirical part of this study analyses the background, the habits and also the preparation of young adults to leave the orphanage in two institutions: Primary school and Orphanage Přestavlky and Orphanage Klánovice. It includes personal life stories of several children not only from the two orphanages but also from children brought up in foster care. The main goal of this thesis was to find out whether the children brought up in orphanages have different vision of the future in comparison with children raised in foster care. The results of our open- ended interview survey are presented in the final part of this paper.

Sonda do životní zkušenosti stigmatizace u sexuálních pracovnic / Stigma experienced by sexual workers

Aksamitová, Magda January 2012 (has links)
This Master's thesis follows the discourse on sex work represented by current academic studies (Sanders, Kong, O'Connell Davison, Malinová). The research is based in phenomenology of lived experience and it develops a theory of stigmatization. It aims to describe how Czech sex workers cope with their stigma. Attention is focused on the following areas: 1) What sense they give to them entering sex work. 2) How they feel about their work and the stigma which attaches to it. 3) What sense they give to management of their work and private identities. 4) Whether their profession has changed their perception of men. 5) What is their vision for leaving sex work. Keywords: Sex workers, sex work, stigma, lived experience,

Uzbecká komunita v Praze / Uzbek community in the Prague

Drahoňovský, Libor January 2013 (has links)
This thesis thematically deals with Uzbek minority in Prague, which was formed during the last two decades. Main part contain and analyze the structure of the Uzbek minority, and I used the statistics concerning number, working and educational activities, gender representation, territorial decomposition, crime and infringements of residential regime of Uzbek immigrants. I focus also on determination of expanse and method of integration in the majority society environment, patterns of behavior and thinking and culture aspects of everyday life in the minority group. From the research methods I use survey, in-depth interviews and participant observation. I place emphasis on the definition of "push" and "pull" factors of immigration. In addition, I document how the Uzbek Immigrants assess social and cultural environment of the host country, their attitudes and opinions to the people of the Czech Republic and members of other nationalities, especially to those with whom they come in a host country usually in contact, and how they integrate in the Czech environment. I also pay big attention to the changes that took place in the Uzbek community during life in the Czech Republic, including the period after 2008 due to the recession of Czech economy and restrict working opportunities and perspectives....

The long-term temporary worker : a prism for understanding the transformations of the wage norm

Cazeneuve, Hervé 02 April 2010 (has links)
By definition, temporary workers are only bound by temporary contracts, yet we find that, between 1998 and 2002, 165 000 people have been employed as temporary workers each year for more than six months. In this research, we raise the question of the existence of these long term temporary workers through the presumption that their existence is linked to the state of the wage continuum that is gradually losing its place as the organizing principle of French society. Through a qualitative survey, we highlight the importance of several elements. First, trust is actively maintained between the temporary worker and the agency. Secondly, the long-term temporary workers rely on family or estate to secure their position. In addition to these prerequisites, we find that, when sent on a mission, temporary workers benefit from the weakening of the security feeling that permanent contracts used to provide.Good reasons behind long term-temporary work are related to the fear of unemployment and to the resignation of the trade-off between political and economic spheres that gave birth to the insurance-State. The security of steady employment is now being questioned while it is needed to obtain loans necessary to purchase home ownership. At the same time, the latter seems to take its place as guarantor and allows home owners to deviate from the continuum wage without repercussion while participating in its weakening.
