To realize the influence of the operators of telecommunication who wear the earphone during work-time in Taiwan, 73 subjects of a company were recruited in the study. 37 age-matched administrators were the control group. Acoustic impedance measurement, pure-tone hearing tests, and a questionnaire were adapted to all subjects before and after work. The acoustic impedance measurements tested the acoustic reflex threshold in 500, 1k, 2k Hz. The pure-tone hearing thresholds were measured in the frequency of 250, 500, 1k, 2k, 3k, 4k, 6k, 8k Hz.
The acoustic reflex threshold showed significant difference between the operators and control group at 500 Hz after 8 hours work (p<0.05). But no matter before or after worked, the threshold averages of the operators are higher than control group. The pure-tone hearing tests showed that, the operators’ thresholds of each frequency, had higher threshold levels (14.52∼24.89dB HL) than control group (4.59∼14.05 dB HL) before work, and the difference at each frequency was significant in statistics(p<0.05). Same result was obtained for after work measurement. No obvious temporary threshold shift (TTS) was indicated for the operators. Prevalences of ear infection, feeling some ill in hearing conscious, getting tinnitus, dizzy, head and ear uncomfortable symptoms are all presented statistically significant difference (p<0.05). 69.60% of the operators suffered tinnitus, and 67.12% for the dizzy problems.
II.
Due to the liberalization and competition worldwide, the telecommunication industry has been changing rapidly in recent years in Taiwan. Private sectors of the telecommunications are blossoming as well. Operators wearing earphones during work are thus increasing quickly. There are ten thousand telecom operators in Taiwan estimately.
To realize the illness of the operators of telecommunication who wear the earphone during work-time in Taiwan, the study collected 405 telecom operators and 128 administrators of a company to investigate the illness induced by wearing the earphone.
The result shows that the prevalences of feeling some ill in hearing conscious, getting tinnitus, dizzy, self feeling in different work environment or different job, head and ear uncomfortable symptoms, feeling thirsty, feeling the rest time not enough are all presented statistically significant difference (p<0.05). 60.24% of the operators suffered tinnitus, and 60.49% for the dizzy problems.
