New Elementary Teachers' Challenges and Perceived Principal Support

Note: / New teachers face many challenges that contribute to the high rate of attrition within theprofession. The principal plays an important role in integrating new teachers and helping themovercome these challenges. This study investigated the challenges of elementary school teacherswith five years of experience or less as well as the relationship between these challenges,principal support, and their intentions to remain in the teaching profession. Results revealed anarray of new teacher challenges such as finding full-time work, working with students withspecial needs, and time management. The study also found that teachers who felt moresupported by their principals were more likely to intend staying in the teaching profession.
