The purpose of this overview of knowledge is to analyze what role reading for pleasure might have in a classroom for adolescents. In order to better understand this, I have gathered 10 different sources that in different ways presents research done on pleasure reading in secondary education. Due to a discovered lack of systematic research in pleasure reading from Swedish studies/institutions, these 10 sources are based on international education research. When analyzing the material, three different themes were found. The first one I named “reading for pleasure as a tool”; this theme includes data that involves what pleasure reading can contribute to alongside other skills, such as literacy, empathy etc. The second theme I named “pleasure reading as a goal”, which includes data that examine pleasure reading as a goal. The term “lifelong readers” and the ambition to introduce students to reading for pleasure are examples of subjects this theme touches on. The last theme that I found I named “the opportunities and difficulties with reading for pleasure” which include different methods and factors that in some way affect students reading for pleasure. This overview of knowledge shows that pleasure reading can function in multiple roles in education, both as a goal and as a tool to reach other skills. Different approaches to pleasure reading and their chances of success may vary between student groups. Designating time and planning focusing on incorporating reading for pleasure seems required from the teacher. Autonomous book choices and designated time for Silent Reading are two factors that does seem critical in making engaged readers.
