Includes bibliography. / This dissertation investigates the lift forces acting on a single sphere close to a horizontal boundary under oscillatory flow conditions. The investigation relates to the role which lift plays in the mechanism of sediment transportation. The apparatus developed for the laboratory simulation consisted of a sphere mounted a different distances away from a horizontal inverted bed, which was oscillated sinusoidally in a stationary water flume.
