ABSTRACT
The research reported in this thesis is an analytical stu~ of the behaviour of rectangular rafts resting on elastic soils of the Winkler model.
A general histor,y is first given of the development of the raft. The contact pressure, pressure settlement relationships and existing design methods are then reviewed and discussed to form a basis for the present investigation. The analysis involves solution of a partial differential equation in the form of a double summation trigonometric series which was programmed on an electronic digital computer. The results are presented in graphical form as deflections, moments and shears of the raft with respect to the flexibility of
raft and soil, the Poisson's ratio, length to breadth ratio and other relevant factors.
Simplified design procedures are proposed for raft design under u.d.l. and point loads. In addition a number of points which warrant special attention in design are also suggested. / abstract / toc / Civil Engineering / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy
