Building on resource dependence theory, this dissertation seeks to explain why target firm directors are retained from the target organization and if this retention has an effect on post-acquisition performance. Both acquisition level characteristics and director level characteristics were assessed in a sample of 173 acquisitions to examine director retention. Findings indicate that power imbalance, relative board size, acquisition relatedness, and director interlocks influence target director retention.
