There has been great interest in recent years concerning the presence and function Scripture within Paul's writing. This study examines the presence of Scripture in the forms of citations, allusions, and echoes within I Cor. 1:18-3:23. It concludes that Scripture is more evident within this portion of Paul's writing than has hitherto been realized. It supports the presence of six Scripture citations including Jer. 9:24 in I Cor. 1:31, Isa. 64:4 in I Cor 2:9, and Isa. 40:13 in I Cor. 2:16. It also identifies two allusions, Jer. 9:23 in I Cor. 1:30 and Isa. 65:17 in I Cor. 2.9. Finally, it supports the presence of six echoes that have shaped Paul's thoughts: Isa. 33:18 in I Cor. 1:20, Isa. 28:16 in I Cor. 1:21-24, Jer. 9:23 in I Cor. 1:26-29, Zech. 4:6 in I Cor. 2:3-5, Isa. 5:2 in I Cor. 3:6-9, Isa. 3:3 in I Cor. 3:10, and Mal. 3:2-3 in I Cor. 3:12-15. Once these prominent Scripture texts have been identified, their function is explored in the light of Paul's identity as a first-century Jewish writer, Old Testament prophet, and apostle. This study surveys the Old Testament context of each Scripture text and compares it to a survey of early Jewish thought that most resembles the particular Scripture text. It then examines I Cor. 1:18-3:23 in light of this understanding. This study concludes that Paul used the Scripture texts in question in context and stands in line with early Jewish tradition. He uses Scripture as Old Testament prophets of old, but in the new time era that began at the time of Christ.
