The published work for this thesis covers a 25 year period between the early 1980s and the present. It traces the development of political parties and the party system in Peru over a period of extreme political and economic volatility. Peru stands out among Latin American countries for the weakness of its party system. The thesis seeks to explain the reasons for that weakness, relating its contemporary manifestations to more structural causes.
