The sinus node (SN) is the pacemaker of the heart. There is a wealth of data surrounding the SN in smaller mammals that demonstrates that the SN is a complex and heterogeneous structure with a unique gene expression pattern allowing it to fulfil its role as the pacemaker of the heart. However, little is known about the functional, structural and molecular make-up of the human SN.
