Adetailed review of the literature showed little infonnation is available which relates and examines the mechanism through which carbons heat in applied electromagnetic field. A study was therefore perfonned across a wide ~range of complex carbons to quantifiably relate their structural ordering to their dielectric properties. An analysis of th~ results concluded that as structural'ordering increases, loss factor directly increases. However a complex relationship is observed between the structural ordering and dielectric constant. Using knowledge gained from this investigation, it has been shown that, from a low rank coal, is it possible, after 70 minutes microwave heating, to produce material similar to conventional cokes. These investigations showed that carbonaceous char particles would heat well in an applied electromagnetic field, which suggested that It might be possible to use microwave energy to heat char in flyash to reduce carbon content.
