This thesis is a study of the idea of the tragic in the writings of Georg Simmel. Locating Simmel's specific understanding of the idea of the tragic within the German tradition Peter Szondi (2002) refers to as the "philosophy of the tragic", I elucidate the fundamental dialectical structure of Simmel's notion of the tragic and explore the presence of this structure in and across Simmel's writings.
