Whining prologues and armed epilogues : the framing text in early English drama to 1660

This thesis is a topic-led examination of the prologues and epilogues of early modem drama, backed by a list of these framing texts, which records, among other items, dates of first publication, theatre venues and opening lines. The Conclusion summarises the main contentions of the thesis and examines more detail a topic hinted at throughout the work: the ways in which prologues and epilogues operate, at different times, as text, actor, character or symolic presence.
